Bio

Murphy Jane is an American musician, singer-songwriter, poet, composer and occasional artist.  Primarily a vocalist and guitarist, she is also proficient on bass and piano.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts to a musical family, it’s no wonder Murphy became adept musically at a very young age.  Her father was a concert pianist, her aunt a talented percussionist, and her Grandmother and Great Aunts were a popular harmonizing singing group in the 1930’s and 40’s known as “The Gormley Sisters.”

Early on, Murphy studied music theory and composition, as well as jazz and classical guitar and piano studies at California State University, Los Angeles.  After graduating Cal State, Los Angeles, Murphy worked as an A&R rep for the jazz and world music division of Atlantic Records.  Murphy helped introduce the U.S. to such diverse acts as King Sunny Ade, Cesaria Evora, Willie and Lobo, Chris Henderson, The Mermen…to name just a few.

Murphy Jane eventually left the business side of music in 2001, and began pursuing her own musical endeavors.  Murphy went on to play guitar and co-write music with other artists and friends, including Dave King (Flogging Molly), The Mermen and Ronnie Winter (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus).  In 2004, Murphy Jane's then band, "Plenty," created a buzz on the college radio circuit, and garnered even more success by earning television credits on such popular shows as CSI: Miami.

Today, Murphy mainly focuses on songwriting for herself and other artists, and occasionally does live shows.  When she is not busy writing songs or poetry, Murphy is busy at work with her other passion, wood-working.  Murphy designs and custom-crafts furniture and pieces of art out of reclaimed and salvaged wood, which she occasionally sells at small art markets.

Murphy Jane's newest album, titled “Dose” (to-be-released in early 2015) is an imaginative collection of stories about unrequited love,  a rancorous one-eyed alchemist and reverent songs about Murphy Jane's' beloved hometown of Boston. The entire album is filled with driving, hypnotic melodic guitar hooks.  There is a signature haunting, surfy, jangly edginess to Murphy Jane's sound that is reminiscent of bands/artists such as The Blake Babies, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Amy Winehouse and R.E.M.

The first tracks from Murphy Jane’s "Dose" titled, "I'll Be Your Man," "Silver Socket" and "Volcano Heart" are now available for streaming and download on  www.reverbnation.com/murphyjane.
