"What's Hot Now"

"Green Apple is the debut album from a versatile new Canadian artist named Calla. Her style is a mixture of pop and folk, with a touch of jazz and even some country, as in the song on the CD we love the most - Take Me, a catchy tune that really shows off this singer's impressive range."

Bio

“Being on stage, performing, sharing my songs, my experiences… it just feels completely natural and comfortable to me”, Calla explains in a post-performance interview. Calla’s authentic and personable stage presence wins you over the first time you see her perform. And the emotional honesty of her songs keeps you listening intently all evening.

Part of Calla’s appeal is a range of original material that travels around the musical spectrum. There are upbeat rock anthems, country ballads, and introspective singer/songwriter tunes woven into her set list that also includes a few classic covers Calla often turns into rousing clap-and-sing-alongs rejoicing in life and love.

Calla’s songwriting style is influenced by different genres of her past, which come together to form a mix of [post-indie-] folk-pop with forthright and sentimental lyrics. Her performance style has been compared to those of Regina Spektor, Feist, or KT Tunstall. One of the quotes that inspires Calla’s songwriting the most is by Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues: “My songs form a kind of biography or diary of my life as they are about people I have loved and people I only knew in my heart, places I have seen only for a moment and places I have lived all my life.”

From an early age, Calla had a nagging question in the pit of her stomach (which continues to worry both her father and her therapist): Who am I? Instead of focusing too hard on self-reflection, she decided instead to have some fun in her youth by enrolling in Humber College’s Contemporary Music program. It was in these hallowed halls that Calla learned the importance of the twelve-tone matrix and the lyrics to countless jazz standards.

It was also during her time at Humber that she managed to bribe her way into enough studio time to record a full-length album, to be released on June 6th, 2013 at 3030 Dundas West! Writing and recording an album was not an easy task, but now that the hard work is out of her hands Calla enjoys celebrating every Monday night at Bryden’s Pub.

You can currently catch Calla singing her heart out at venues around Toronto like The Sister (formerly Mitzi’s Sister) and The Central. Keep in touch with Calla at facebook.com/musicbycalla.
