"“Mustard Men” takes punk rock to a new level"

With the release of their new EP “Snuff” set to drop Oct 14th, this is a opportune time to take a look back at first “Mustard Men” self titled CD that was released back in December of 2010.

A cursory listen to “Mustard Men” and it would be easy to label them a punk band and while you would not be entirely wrong, you wouldn’t be correct either. While the band certainly wears their punk influence on their sleeves, the songs on their debut CD are peppered with dashes of alternative, garage, hard rock and grunge.

The CD is blistering, loud and raw from start to finish but rather than simply pounding out major chords with a cacophony of drums as a back drop, the Mustards impart a sonic spectrum of depth, dimension and capability. The members of this band are a talented lot that isn’t afraid to use a diversity of chord structures and arrangements that move beyond the punk rock genre.

"Band puts folksy ‘teeth’ into tune"

Irish folklore meets punk rock in “Jenny Green Teeth,” the most popular song of the local band Mustard Men.

“It’s a very easy song to listen to,” said Scott Wolz, 23, of New Lenox, guitarist and vocalist. “It’s based on the Jenny Green Teeth legend, what parents used to tell their kids in the olden days to stay away from the water. There are different versions of the story, so I looked them up in Wikipedia and mixed them up in the song.”

The members of Mustard Men have “a really weird writing style,” which pleases them because it prevents them from mimicking other punk bands. Neither their roles in the band nor a preconceived genre limits the members’ creativity. “Someone just brings a song to the band and we learn it and lay it out,” Wolz said.

For instance, one song on their new self-titled, 18-track CD is called “Baby You’re as Cold as Ice” and features a funk tune. However, “Pizza Before Slumber” has a slower pace.

"Reggies Rock Club (Chicago, IL)"

"I booked the Mustard Men through word of mouth through a well respected friend in the music industry. I was pleasantly surprised when they began to play. Punk rock without the ridiculous overeager attitude you see in so many bands these days. Just good, old fashioned, punk rock and roll. I'll never hesitate in booking them again!" My actual opinion- " They fucking rock. They're welcome back to my club as often as I can get them!"
