Bio

My Familiar is a six-piece band based out of Philadelphia with a style that exists comfortably between folk, rock, and soul. The refreshing, moody spirit of the band lives in their athletic vocals, creative songwriting, passionate performance, and arrangements characterized by richness, dynamism, and a flair for the dramatic. Newcomers to the music scene, My Familiar is excited to release their first album, Demons, at the end of March, but have already enjoyed some local recognition through opportunities like their Grape Room residency in Manayunk, as well as features on the Round Guys Radio podcast in Lansdale, The After Hours Project by Pagoda City Records in Reading, and The Sunday Sessions Project by PBR Productions in Perkasie.

My Familiar began formation with collaboration between long-time friends Chris Dunlap and Lydia Joy, the band’s two vocalists, establishing the tight and intricate harmonies that would become a hallmark of My Familiar’s unique sound. Luke Benedict, a high school bandmate of Chris, was next to join, enhancing the music with sophisticated percussion. Bassist Brian Clarke, after seeing some members perform at an open mic, enthusiastically pitched his theoretical finesse and cheeky sense of humor to the group. Then, the band was joined by Julia Povlow who rounded out My Familiar’s sonic character with her sweet and graceful tones on violin. Lastly, Zak Bigelow joined after being seen at an open mic night where his original songs impressed band leader Chris Dunlap so much, that he was invited to join.

My Familiar’s debut album, Demons, is a concept album with each song themed around one of the seven deadly sins save for the title track which focuses on the individual and one’s relationship to catalysts of sin such as passion, shame, fear, and uncertainty. These interpersonal relationships are also woven into each of the other seven songs with the common thread of understanding, harnessing, and building healthy relationships with various inner demons.
