My bubba

Probably one of the best folk record released for the year. The beautiful sound of My Bubba & Mi originate from three lovely ladies from Denmark. All three of them carry their instruments and create some of the loveliest, melodic, folk tracks you will ever hear. It might sound like an overstatement, but if you adore relaxing folk music, then this is a must have record.

By coincidence or fate, My Bubba and Mia, became roommates in Copenhagen. They discovered each other's passion for music as they spent the many months together. Sharing laughters, singing and practicing. An invitation to head for Italy knocked on their doors; soon enough the girls found themselves heading home with a record on hand. Truly a wonderful album to listen to. It's hard to imagine why this is being offered for free but I'm not complaining. Awesome download right here.

Mixing gorgeous harmonies with expert finger picking, these ladies definitely know how to strike a beautiful chord. How It's Done in Italy is their first album and is released on both We Were Never Being Boring and Beep! Beep! Back Up The Truck. As of the moment, the ladies are currently on tour in Europe. This amazing album comes with 10 tracks that compile melodic harmonies, expert guitar and organ work as well as a sincerity that is hardly present in most folk acoustic records. Gone opens up the compilation with an enigmatic, almost 50s sounding vocal work. Its quirky lyrics is endearing and makes you think of quiet reminiscing in the sunny countryside. Steamengeene is another countryside-nostalgia inducing track that features a surprisingly beautiful sample of a steam engine in the background. It has a slightly upbeat vibe and makes you feel as if you are inside a steam engine looking out onto the beautiful fields as they pass by. Singing and humming away.

Aqua, King Diamon, The Raveonettes and Whigfield. Those are 4 bands from Copenhagen that I can name without having to cheat. I challenge you to name any more than that. Bet you can’t. What you should do, however, is head on over to http://www.beepbeep.nl/bands/my-bubba-mi/bio/ and have a geez at this album because it truly is, without any sense of hyperbole, one of the best things I’ve heard in a long time. How 3 girls from Denmark, Sweden and Iceland have come together to craft such sweet, sweet music is virtually a modern day miracle.

Unlike the sugar-sweet pop of Aqua and Whigfield and the squall of The Raveonettes, My Bubba & Mi craft beautiful folk songs that will soothe and calm you after a hard day at the salt mines. Beautiful tunes such as I Will Never Love A Young Boy Again and Steamengeene, their self-styled ‘…lullabies from the countryside…’ wouldn’t be out of place on the back half of a White Stripes release, possibly sung by Meg whilst Jack noodles away on his guitar. Honestly though, a track by track review of this would be redundant as they’re all gold and they’re all worth spending time on. Melancholy, soft, smooth and lilting, these are songs to fall asleep to and to wake up to, just for the joy of listening to music. They’re simple, they’re beautiful and they’re wonderful.

Bands don’t do it like this any more either. Every single one of the 1500 CD’s released on March 8th, 2010, is hand crafted. This alone is an absolute joy to behold, a band actively taking an interest in making their product unique, beautiful and worth the investment. That you can offer a donation to download this album rather than paying a fixed price is even more unique – offering their music for whatever people choose ot pay for it. AND ALL THIS TOO, DURING OUR 96 HOURS AT ICEE-LAND AIRY-WAVES:

First of all we sang some songs at the National Radio. The host had a nice voice and the floor made strange sounds. Thank you for the airwaves Iceland.
Then we played a concert at a hair salon. Ida got her do fixed, while My and Bubba soundchecked.

"Have you heard this one? 3 girls walk into a hair salon in iceland: a swede, a dane & an icelander. one of them gets her hair cut and blow-dried. then she picks up a bull bass and joins the other two, playing a set of 30 minutes. in the same hair salon. while some guy gets his hair, and we our minds, blown". Thank you for the hairwaves Iceland.
My went hunting. Turned back halfway, she decided she'd rather have another hot bath. Iceland is full of naturally hot water alongside the ice and cold and we bathed in it at least three times every day. Iceland Airwaves hosted semi underwater concerts each night of the festival at our local pool. We felt like mermaids as we swam along the pool floor with Lay Low's voice in our ears.
After the swim we had some tea. We sung some songs to polish our memory and get ready for the soundcheck.
Our main Iceland Airwaves concert! It was a pretty early one and we spent some time in the backstage worrying that we wouldn't have any audience. We met Mugison in there, polishing his hair for three hours and building a strange machine - we think. It was a sweaty backstage and old and nice. When we started playing the venue got full and people sat on the floor, quiet. Eventually they got up and made noise.
After the storm we cheered with bubbling Icelandic beer. This is upstairs at lovely Iðnó and us trying to be as lovely and fit in.
We had an exquisite Iceland Airwaves celebration dinner at a great restaurant downtown called 3 Frakkar (= 3 coats or 3 French people). Where we had the whale. They had a couple of nice paintings hanging, too.
Festive Americans we met in the street, they told us zombie stories and then we danced tango for a few minutes. They had an Icelandic elf stone with them, we got to hold it.
Sometimes it felt like people were running a musical marathon, especially the Icelanders, they wanted to catch every show on the menu (which is nearly impossible). They ran from concert to concert to concert in the rain... Having lots of fun for sure!
We squeezed a couple of concerts in too, when we had the time between all the other important fun things. Iceland Airwaves is such a nice festival. All the nice venues are close to eachother in cutiepie Reykjavík and happy and sweet and people from all over. A (more or less) delicate selection of artists and tons of concerts to enjoy! If you like contemporary music, that is. We tried our best. One of the nicest ones we attended was Snorri Helgason. He was a good ole' manbeing with emotions in the right place and feet below on the ground to hold them up, and our hearts got a good massage that night.
Bubba's birthday in the National Gallery of Iceland. My made the audience sing for Bubba like they did for her on her birthday in Venice this summer. In front of us our new found Icelandic audience sending us their precious Scandinavian warmth and behind us Pétur Thomsen's cold pictures of lost Iceland.
We also played a show at the Nordic House. That day was rainy too but there was a triple rainbow. We went treasure hunting and found a Greenlandic girl who looked like Pocahontas but for reals, Nive Nielsen, who plays ukulele with her Belgium friends. The Nordic House served us soup in cups and butter on rocks.
When the festival was over we went horse shopping. Ida was looking for a horse with a nice hairdo.

My Bubba & Mi is a folk-based trio whose simple, yet beautiful, songs will captivate you. Hailing from Denmark, Sweden and Iceland, the three girls write and perform what they like to fittingly call “lullabies from the countryside.” Read the interview, listen to the songs and fall in love with My Bubba & Mi.

Ten Questions with My Bubba & Mi

1. Tell us how three girls from three different countries – Iceland, Denmark and Sweden – found each other and realized that together, you formed something special.

My: I was living in Copenhagen, going to circus school, and Bubba answered my add for a room for rent in my apartment. I liked her in a mysterious way, and she moved in. While she was unpacking her boxes I was doing the dishes in the kitchen, singing, and she came out to me and asked me to sing with her on a song she was writing. I had never written a song before but Bubba got me started that way, after we spent some afternoons and evenings singing together (mostly humming harmonies over her guitar). Mia moved in too and we thought her organ could be a nice lively addition to our sleepy couch melodies. It was. We played some shows just to see if people liked it, and they did. We had a hunch they would. In a mysterious way.

2. You’ve spent quite a bit of time in Italy performing and recording your music. Did your time in Italy influence your music or outlook in any way? What are your biggest influences?


MBM: Musically probably not so much, but our lovely gorgeous times there have definitely encouraged us to keep making and playing music. Our influences are mainly old country, blues, bluegrass, gospel and soul. There are some living artists that we really appreciate, but most of our heroes are sadly dead and gone.

3. You girls handmade every album cover, making each one a unique piece of art – that is truly amazing and a testament to how important your fans are to you. The three of you obviously have a lot of creativity – do any of you have any other artistic hobbies you are passionate about other than music?


Bubba: My is an actress & artist (visual & literary) and I am a bento box pro and graduating as a graphic designer this spring. Ida (who joined on stand up bass after Mia was kidnapped by a rock n’ roll band) is an amazing cook. We like to dance a lot and are collecting old dresses - My is making a museum someday. Among other things. The list is quite long.

4. What is your songwriting process? Do the three of you write all your music together or is there one particular songwriter in the group?

MBM: The majority of the lyrics are My’s, and the rest is Bubba’s. We usually come to each other with a sketch for a song, or one has a melody, the other has a text, and then we just put them together together and finish it off as a song.

5. Where do you currently live? Are you still roommates?


MBM: Bubba is in Iceland, Ida is in Denmark, and My is in Sweden, or somewhere in between. We are roommates when we are all at the same place, except Ida who lives on her boat.

6. What is the best part of being musicians and what is the biggest challenge?


MBM: The best part - ooh - is probably the wonderful way of traveling, being on tour meeting wonderful people every day and seeing funny foreign things through our music. But the core of that is how music and songwriting is a genius way to spend time, alone or with others. There is such simple comfort and joy and outlet and expression in it (compared to TV and the internet, for example), which is how and why we started, and keep going. The biggest challenge is not so big but has to do with coping with the business side of music and making good decisions, being street smart and putting up with boring important things sometimes.

7. What one song on your album do you think represents you best as artists and why?


My: uhm.

Bubba: Can’t really say.. Would be like choosing your favorite child somehow

8. The photographs on your website are fantastic and really capture your style. Have you made any videos as well or do you plan to in the near future?

MBM: Oh yes, you just wait.

9. Did any of you have formal music training while growing up?

MBM: No…well, Bubba took some guitar classes in her early teens but never practiced and gave it up.

10. What is one thing about you that you would like your jamendo fans to know?


MBM: That we like them liking us and we hope to see them all some day and sing them to sleep.

The evening started with a quiet, laid-back atmosphere at beautiful Iðnó when girl trio My Bubba And Mi took the stage. The slowly growing crowd took their seats on the floor, which, together with the atmosphere of the music, made perfect sense. The girls, who play bluegrass inspired music are actually called My, Bubba and Mi and are Danish, Icelandic and Swedish. In sober thirties style dresses and haircuts they played an impressively large double bass, a guitar and a banjo with great confidence and created beautiful vocal harmonies with their soft, crystal clear voices. The lyrics to the songs were quirky and humorous and often stirred laughter in the audience. Song titles included ‘How It's Done In Italy’ and ‘I Will Never Love A Young Boy Again’, and exuded a melancholic simple beauty that evoked the past but at the same time proved modern and refreshing. Their rendition of Peaches song ‘Fuck The Pain Away’ was both brilliant and funny. A lovely and sincere start to the night.

My Bubba & Mi zijn drie vriendinnen (afkomstig uit IJsland, Denemarken en Zweden), die slechts toevalligerwijs bij elkaar in hetzelfde huis in de Deense hoofdstad Kopenhagen terechtkwamen. Ze gingen samen muziek maken en werden vervolgens uitgenodigd om een album op te nemen in Italie (vandaar de titel).
My Bubba & Mi is het eerste album van een buitenlandse artiest op het label Beep! Beep! Back up the Truck. Dit platenlabel, dat sinds 2008 bestaat, baarde opzien door optimaal gebruik te maken van internet en alle muziek van het eigen label uit te brengen via Mininova onder Creative Commons License. Daarnaast wordt alle muziek ook op een fysiek product uitgebracht. En dat blijkt te werken.


My Bubba & Mi (My, Bubba en Mia zijn de namen van de drie vriendinnen) spelen gitaar, mandoline en piano/orgel/synthesizer en mondharmonica en waarschijnlijk nog meer.
Het eerste nummer is direct prachtig. Een subtiele accordeon met een heldere stem in subtiele productie. Later vallen andere instrumenten in. Waarbij zelfs het kloppen op de gitaarkast gebruikt wordt (doet je de eerste keer zeker verwonderd opkijken).
Bij het verder luisteren blijkt dat de drie vriendinnen het gebruik van cliches niet schuwen. Een aantal van de door hen gebruikte deuntjes hebben een grote herkenbaarheid. Lijken soms te bestaan uit de voorgeprogrammeerde muziekjes uit het orgel (abij het indrukken van een accoord worden de bassen al ingevuld). Dit klinkt wellicht negatief, maar door de eenvoudige, kale productie en samenzang heeft de muziek een mooie balans gekregen. Het stoort niet, maar ik betrap me er bij het beluisteren van de muziek wel op dat de herkenbaarheid maakt dat mijn gedachten soms wegdwalen. Anderzijds betrap ik me er net zo vaak op dat een voet meebeweegt met de muziek of dat ik meefluit met een vrolijke melodie. De herkenbaarheid van de muziek en melodieen werkt in die zin zeer zeker. De schijnbare eenvoud van de liedjes heeft samen met de zang iets lieflijks. Pas bij vaker beluisteren merk je dat de eenvoud ook de kracht is. Het karakter van de drie vriendinnen straalt zeker uit over dit album. Een zekere vrolijkheid, zonder uitbundig te zijn. Een zekere eenvoud, zonder makkelijk te zijn. Een zekere lieflijkheid, zonder aandoenlijk te zijn. My Bubba & Mi noemen de songs: “lullabies from the countryside”. Daar kan ik het zeker mee eens zijn.Maar met deze cd hebben My Bubba & Mi zeker een volwaardig album afgeleverd dat haar kracht haalt uit de eenvoud die het uitstraalt. Zondermeer erg mooie Lullabies from the countryside. Dat ze elkaar nog niet zo lang kennen betekent ook dat er nog meer te ontdekken is. Soms is het verhaal achter een band net zo intrigerend als de muziek. Neem nou het Deense My Bubba & Mi, waarvan de leden toevallig bij elkaar komen te wonen en tevens door stom toeval ontdekt wordt door een Italiaanse caféhouder die op vakantie in Denemarken is. Hij wordt direct gegrepen door de hypnotiserende klanken van 3 jonge dames die er voor een klein publiek optreden. De Italiaan nodigt de 3 uit om in Italië te komen optreden, het blijft een Italiaan, waar ze gretig op in gaan. De tweede uitnodiging daarna is om er in de brandende zon van Zuid-Italië hun debuut op te nemen. Dat debuut is er en heet uiteraard How It’s Done In Italy. My, Bubba (Guðbjörg) en Mia, van origine uit Zweden, IJsland en Denemarken, zijn dames die pastorale songs maken. Hierbij is de harmonieuze samenzang een lust voor het oor. Ze plukken daarbij wat aan de gitaar en mandoline, blazen op een mondharmonica, toetsen op orgel, piano en synthesizer en maken her en der gebruik van samples. Het langdurig samen zingen in slaapkamers en keukens werpt duidelijk z’n vruchten af. Weliswaar klinkt het heel lo-fi, maar tegelijk ook heel ongedwongen en daarmee heel natuurlijk. Het betoverende zit hem in de harmonie en de eigenzinnige freak folk-achtige aanpak, maar dan zonder rare fratsen. De muziek bestaat verder uit bekende bluesloopjes, smaakvolle altcountry en beklijvende popmuziek. Altijd voorzien ze dit van hun hemelse zang. Alles is zo oorspronkelijk dat ik of heel veel kleine associaties kan opnoemen of dat gewoon zoals in dit geval maar nalaat. Groots door alles klein te houden. Drie dromerige hippieachtige meisjes die een beetje romantisch uit de hoek komen’ klinkt als een plaatje dat we net te vaak gehoord hebben. How It’s Done In Italy klinkt echter fris en sprankelend, als een klaterend beekje.
Een bekentenis: we moeten niet weten van tokkelmeisjes. Het zíet er nochtans doorgaans best fraai uit. Een semiverlegen jongedame, zomerjurkje, lang sluik haar dat een beetje sexy valt, tedere blik in de ogen. Maar dan dat geprul op die akoestische gitaar. Van een turn–off gesproken.

Maar kijk — zat er iets in ons drankje? Is het simpelweg het bedwelmend effect van een warme zomeravond? Of gewoon de vermoeidheid die mild maakt? —: wanneer How It’s Done In Italy, het debuut van My Bubba & Mi, opgelegd wordt, volgt geen zucht van ergernis, noch worden aanstalten gemaakt het schijfje met stenen verzwaard naar de bodem van het dichtstbijzijnde kanaal te verplaatsen. Integendeel, getuigen bemerken een subtiele glimlach en goedkeurend hoofdknikken terwijl My Bubba & Mi bezit neemt van de huiselijke stereo.

ochtans start How It’s Done In Italy onvervalst tokkelachtig. "Gone" klinkt als een typische bohemienvariant op het klassieke tienerverdriet. Maar toch, zelfs in dat openingsnummer gloort een magische schijn die zich verder in de plaat alleen maar meer openbaart.

Het flirten met muziekjes allerhande lijkt daarbij de sleutel tot deze plaat. Zo neigt "Bubbas Blues" op heel subtiele wijze naar Django Reinhardt. Die jazzy ondertoon is trouwens op heel het album — zij het altijd voorzichtig — aanwezig. Daardoor ontstaat een sfeertje van zuiderse, zomerse vrijheid, die onwillekeurig doet denken aan Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Maar net zo goed aan de treinritten van Woody Guthrie ("Steemengeene") en Au Revoir Simone.

Die laatste vergelijking is zo gek niet: in "Satisfied Mind" maken een hakkelend ritme en overstuurde synthesizer de dienst uit, en dan zit je al snel bij die drie andere deernes die met mooie muziekjes hun looks in de schaduw zetten.

Dat datzelfde "Satisfied Mind" het verder moet hebben van een hoog kampvuurgehalte, inclusief meerstemmigheid, stoort dan ook helemaal niet. Het is de manier waarop deze drie muzikantes hun muzikale horizon opentrekken, die ervoor zorgt dat How It’s Done In Italy zo’n aantrekkelijk plaatje geworden is.

Nochtans is het niet evident dat het album er überhaupt gekomen is. De drie leden — ze laten zich echt aanspreken als Mi, Bubba en My — zijn afkomstig uit IJsland, Denemarken en Zweden, leerden elkaar kennen in Kopenhagen, werden daar ontdekt door een Italiaanse caféhouder die het trio hoorde spelen en prompt naar Italië uitnodigde om daar een plaat op te nemen. Die plaat verscheen vervolgens op het Nederlandse Beep! Beep! Back Up The Truck, dat 1.500 exemplaren op vinyl en cd liet persen die elk een door de leden handgemaakte hoes aangemeten kregen. Of dat verhaal waarheid of legende is, maakt eigenlijk niet zoveel uit. Het is het soort romantisch verhaal waarvan je hoopt dat het achter een dergelijke plaat schuilgaat.

Is onze liefde voor tokkelmeisjes nu helemaal opengebloeid? We durven het betwijfelen. Maar My Bubba & Mi heeft alvast gezorgd voor de eerste barsten in een deur waarvan we dachten dat ze voor altijd dicht ging blijven. Niet slecht voor enkele meisjes die zich, afgaande op de foto’s die ze op facebook plaatsten, op tournee vooral onledig houden met het zoeken naar plaatselijke bankethoogstandjes. Een jaar of tien geleden woonde ik in een smalle straat met aan de overkant op de begane grond een zogenaamde doortrekkerswoning. Die functie had het waarschijnlijk wegens te klein en te duur, maar wel de de noodzakelijke behoefte vullende. De jongeman die er woonde zat op een middag met wat vrienden in het raam te musiceren. En verdienstelijk. Een week later was hij vertrokken en ik heb nooit geweten naar wie ik zat te luisteren. Er zijn mensen die slagvaardiger zijn dan ik. Zo is het verhaal dat bij My Bubba & Mi hoort bijzonder. De band bestaat uit een Deense, Zweedse en Duitse. Ze speelden ergens op hun thuisbasis Kopenhagen. Toevallig passeerde er een Italiaanse caféhouder passeerde. Hij hoorde ze spelen en nodigde ze uit om naar Italië te komen. Even later kwam daar het aanbod om de plaat op te nemen bij en om het bizarre mondiale verhaal compleet te maken komt de plaat op het Nederlands label Beep! Beep! Back Up The Truck uit. De titel How It's Done In Italy lijkt me voor zich spreken. De drie dames maken een soort van lo-fi folk waarop hier en daar gewalst kan worden. Hartstikke lief en intiem gebracht. Dit is nou zo'n plaatje van een band die nooit op de Pinkpoppen van deze wereld zal spelen, maar het juist klein zal moeten gaan houden anders is de charme eraf. En verliefd op het bandje worden is dan niet te voorkomen, maar bedenk dat een Italiaan je voor was. Dankzij hem is het niet bij een optreden in Kopenhagen gebleven. - Fileunder (in dutch)

...y es que jugamos con esa golosina-gominola en forma de corazón que acompaña a la edición casi manufacturada de lo que ha sido el disco de presentación ("How it's done in Italy") de este grupo que era trío y que por el camino se ha quedado en dúo. Y es que las dos componentes, afincadas en Copenhague, y que se han quedado en la formación son My Larsdotter, sueca, y Guðbjörg Tómasdóttir "Bubba", islandesa. El acompañante ocasional es Samuelle Jack Palazzi, que toca el contrabajo de madera. Basterebbe la foto qui sopra a dimostrarlo, ma ci teniamo a ripetere che le My Bubba & Mi sono la cosa più adorabile apparsa al mondo da qualche mese a questa parte.
Tre ragazze del nord Europa si trovano a dividere un appartamento e, tra tè e biscotti pomeridiani, fanno anche dell'ottima musica.
Il loro è un folk tranquillo e acustico dalle voci leggere, delicate e posate su melodie che potrei definire solo come profondamente appaganti.
Se siete amanti delle metafore e delle immagini, pitturatevi in testa una gita in una campagna assolata, la tranquillità di un giretto in barca al lago, o ancora la lettura del vostro libro preferito sotto un albero in un bel pomeriggio di inizio estate.

Hello girls! Can you introduce the band a little bit?
My bubba & Mi is My, singing and playing a 100+years old cittra (table harp), Bubba on guitar and banjo and harmonizing with My, and Ida (new!) on stand up bass. On this tour we have our excellent driver Samuele (dei Calorifer is Very Hot, ndf) standing in for Ida on the stand up bass, since she is stuck in school back home.
We met when Bubba moved into My's apartment in Copenhagen a couple of years ago, and started singing together since it was such a lovely way to pass time in the evenings, with no tv around. Mia moved in with her organs and our little trio somehow ended up in Italy, made a record, and so on. Now Mia is with psychedelic rock bands most of the time, and Ida is in.

Since that's the name of your first album, we'd like to ask you: how is it done in Italy? :)

Non sono un esperto di Scandinavia, anzi sono anche un tipo che mal sopporta il freddo, però ho sempre considerato questo paese come una terra piena di opposti e anche per questo ricca di fascino. 6 mesi di buio o 6 mesi di sole, miti di gnomi o miti di vichinghi. E le mezze stagioni dove sono finite?
Dalla Scandinavia vengono pure le My Bubba & Mi e oggi esce il loro How It’s Done In Italy.

Mi fa davvero piacere parlarvi oggi di questo disco, anche perchè stimo i ragazzi che “ci stanno dietro”. Ho avuto il piacere di averlo in pre-ascolto da qualche settimana e mi sono fatto un’idea precisa delle My Bubba & Mi. Per un po’ ho cercato le parole giuste per raccontarvelo, ma non nascondo che ne sarebbero venuti fuori dei paragoni con altra genete. Più per un mia mania di trovar paragoni ad ogni costo che per altro.

Poi mi è capitato un post di Fabio Benni che inquadrava perfettamente la situazione e piuttosto che dirvi le stesse cose con un vestito nuovo, vi cito testualmente le sue parole:

A chi ama infilare la musica nei cassetti, suggeriremmo di cercare in quello del pre-folk, o in quello dell’old-blues, oppure, più semplicemente, di trovare un cassetto nuovo e scriverci sopra My Bubba and Mi.

How It’s Done In Italy è un disco semplice ed entusiasmante, se ancora ti stai chiedendo dove sia finita la prima Laura Veirs, lascia perdere la ricerca: con My Bubba & Mi, non avrai certo tempo d’annoiarti. Fingerpicking, orgaetto e grandi doti di songwriting ti trasporteranno in un viaggio da clandestino sul vagone merci di una locomotiva a vapore.

Parlavo di miti vichinghi e di gnomi? Bè, la bellezza di questo disco, rurale ed intimistico è da ricercarsi nel magico sottobosco abitao da fate e folletti, di sicuro! - Indie riviera (in italian)

Moderno diario da Gran Tour ottocentesco, velato quindi di malinconia, ma naturalmente scevro da perigliose autoindulgenze, sempre in agguato visto il genere. Questo l’antifolk del combo danese, racchiuso nello scrigno del loro soggiorno italiano - suonato e registrato in una casa delle campagne bresciane -, piccoli bozzetti lo fi (ma la produzione è buona ed adeguata) tra cucina e caminetto, come apprendo da informativa. La band, tutta al femminile, intesse un vecchio giro di pre-war folk nella prima ‘Gone’, su cui una voce velata tratteggia una malinconica nenia. L’old blues di ‘Bubba’s Blues’ è una notevole reinterpretazione di antica scuola, un certo vecchio codice che il combo sa davvero padroneggiare con stile e misura, come non si tarda ad apprezzare. Un organo per l’andamento ieratico di ‘Really Really’, ed è solo l’inizio di una ballad uscita dagli anni ‘50, cori soul e ritmo incalzante - tra Cocorosie e l’ultimo Bonnie Prince Billy -, in un quadretto bucolico di squisita fattura. Il tono swingato di ‘After You’ riprende certe tendenze a lungo indagate da artiste come Joanna Newsom e Feist, in una rifunzionalizzazione credibile e sufficientemente ispirata. ‘How It’s Done In Italy’, che uscirà in primavera su We Were Never Being Boring, si assesta così su pacati toni da leggerezza acustica piuttosto orgogliosamente tradizionale, senza troppo concedere a vezzi modaioli, è non è un male per un genere ormai fin troppo codificato da cloni di cloni. Ma con una marcia in più, tra rispetto ed eleganza. [***]

you can possibly listen to music.

A volte la semplicità con cui accadono le cose è sorprendente ed è davvero bello che alcuni casi, alcuni incastri della vita, siano così perfetti da sembrare impossibili.

Believe it or not, questa è una di quelle storie incredibili, la storia di tre ragazze (My, Bubba e Mia per l’appunto), tre coinquiline, una svedese, una islandese e una danese (no, non è una barzelletta nordica) che suonano e cantano assieme tutti i giorni e tutte le notti finché non cominciano ad esibirsi in piccoli locali come My, Bubba & Mi.

Il proprietario di un pub italiano, in vacanza a Copenhagen le scopre proprio in una di queste serate e, conquistato, le invita in Italia per un concerto. Le ragazze accettano senza esitare e il resto vien da sé. I concerti si moltiplicano finché non arriva la proposta dell’album e nasce così How it’s done in Italy, uscito in Italia l’8 marzo per l’etichetta indipendente We Were Never Being Boring, suonato e registrato nelle campagne bresciane.

Folk e blues si intrecciano nelle ballate pizzicate delle tre ninfette del Nord, dolci e delicate quanto brave nel saper modulare le proprie voci. Mai troppo manieristiche né ripetitive nonostante l’omogeneità innegabile del loro lavoro. Simili, o comunque ispirate a tanti (si è parlato di Joanna Newsom, Cocorosie e addirittura Feist) ma sempre uniche e riconoscibili anche e soprattutto nelle cover di altri artisti, loro feticcio, che riescono sempre a rendere delle piccole meraviglie, regalo per i fan avidi di novità e che muoiono dalla voglia di sentirle cantare.

E’ un album caldissimo, quelle delle My, Bubba & Mi (ironico no?), che verrebbe voglia di ascoltare davanti al caminetto, ma che si adatta perfettamente anche all’arrivo della primavera, ai lunghi tramonti estivi, alle foglie che cadono d’autunno. Un album per tutte le stagioni insomma, che porta con sé un immaginario forte, fatto di campagne e prati e nastri e cappelli di paglia, fatto di belle fotografie e luce sfocata, stile impeccabile e ben definito.

Il mix di musica, voci ed estetica dreamy è davvero ipnotico, e così piacevole da invogliare a chiudere gli occhi e farsi trasportare nel loro mondo fatato, per una splendida serata in compagnia delle loro “lullabies from the countryside”.

Le My, Bubba & Mi saranno il 16 aprile a Brescia al Tipozerozero. Non potete mancare. - Cool hunter Italy. (in italian)

Een knallend begin van het nieuwe seizoen kon je het optreden van My Bubba & Mi afgelopen donderdag in Cul de Sac wellicht niet noemen, maar mooi was de kalme performance van het vrouwelijke folk trio zeker wel. Ondanks het op deze uitgaansavond snel aanzwellende gerucht uit de voorzijde van het café deden de Scandinavische meiden onverstoorbaar hun ding.

Een muzikaal drietal uit IJsland, Zweden en Denemarken dat elkaar toevallig in Kopenhagen treft, om daar op een dag door een passerende Italiaanse toerist te worden ontdekt en vervolgens in zijn thuisland opnamen te maken, met een eerder dit jaar uitgekomen debuutplaat als resultaat. Dat is het onwaarschijnlijke verhaal van My Bubba & Mi in een notendop. Deze avond geeft dit bijzondere gezelschap het eerste optreden in Cul de Sac na de zomerstop, enkel gewapend met drie stemmen en een akoestische bas, gitaar, banjo en citer. Over gebrek aan interesse hoeven de noordse schonen in ieder geval niet te klagen, want de kuil voor het podium is aanvankelijk goed gevuld met overwegend vrouwelijke toeschouwers. Die hebben zich echter blijkbaar voor het grootste deel niet ingesteld op een avondje luistermuziek, want velen van hen wijken al snel uit naar het hogere deel van de kroeg en kletsen er daar lustig op los.

Jammer, maar misschien is een uitspanning als deze op een uitgaansavond ook niet de meest geschikte plek voor een intiem en breekbaar concert. Een huiskamersetting had wellicht meer voor de hand gelegen. Het trio trekt zich gelukkig echter niets aan van het toenemende rumoer en gaat rustig door met het uitvoeren van eerlijke, zachte liedjes die vaak in de verte wat van ingetogen Amerikaanse folksongs weg hebben. Een enkele keer permitteren de dames zich een tempoversnelling tijdens een nummer (wat door het bardeel van het publiek meteen enthousiast onthaald wordt), maar hun hart ligt toch vooral bij fijne slaapliedjes. Geen repertoire om uitbundig op te dansen dus, maar daarom niet minder meeslepend, mits men bereid is de oren open te zetten. Dat vinden de mensen die de kuil blijven bevolken gelukkig ook en zo zorgt My Bubba & Mi voor een ongewone, maar wonderschone start van het concertseizoen in Cul de Sac. - 3VOOR12 TILBURG (in dutch)

Met een lentezonnetje in het gezicht gaan we op weg naar Houtzaagmolen De Ster. Dat is de locatie voor een nieuwe editie van Vette Analoge Shit, de live avond van het Beep! Beep! Back up the Truck label. Tijdens deze editie presenteren zowel My Bubba & Mi als Het Gloren hun debuutalbum, dat ook op dit label is verschenen. Behalve wat kabels en een paar speakers wijst weinig er in de molen op dat er later opgetreden gaat worden. Terwijl het publiek langzaam binnen loopt, doen de bands op hun gemak nog een soundcheck. Vanwege de afwezigheid van een backstage zijn tassen en gitaren op en tussen de houten balken gelegd. Het daglicht dat nog door de ramen naar binnen komt, maakt dat de sfeer heel anders is dan bij een optreden in een reguliere concertzaal. Een gevoel dat wordt versterkt door de lichte geur van hout en mest die in de molen hangt.

Als zijn optreden klaar is, lijkt Témy Phem te aarzelen om zichzelf Mekong te noemen. Misschien is het de omgeving of het feit dat het één van zijn eerste optredens onder dit alterego is. Een gebrek aan ervaring kan het niet zijn: die heeft hij als voorman van Kismet genoeg. Op zijn MySpace zijn de nummers meer ingevuld maar vanavond zijn het alleen Témy en zijn elektrische gitaar. Hoogtepunt van de vijf liedjes die hij speelt is het nummer voor de Oudenoorders, dat qua intensiteit doet denken aan Phnom Penh 1974, een nummer dat hij tijdens optredens van Kismet solo speelt.

De dames van My Bubba & Mi hebben hun muzikale kwaliteiten min of meer bij toeval ontdekt als huisgenoten in Kopenhagen. Alsof één toeval nog niet genoeg is, zijn ze na een optreden in een bar door een passerende Italiaanse toerist gevraagd om een album op te nemen. Het resultaat, ‘How It’s Done in Italy’, is vorige maand verschenen en wordt vanavond officieel gepresenteerd.

Als de avondzon is vervangen door de lampen van de Leidseweg nemen My Bubba en Ida (die blijkbaar Mi vervangt) een beetje onwennig hun plek tussen de speakers, microfoons en kabels in. Met hun tuttige jurkjes, rood gestifte lippen en vestjes die je oma ook altijd droeg lijken ze uit een ander tijdperk te komen. De verlegen praatjes tussen de nummers door en het onhandige gerommel met microfoons onderstrepen dat we hier niet met geroutineerde popmuzikanten te maken hebben.

Dat beeld past ook bij de muziek die ze maken: een mix van blues, bluegrass en folk. In zang en het gitaarspel horen we soms flarden van de Amerikaanse bluegrass-koningin Gillian Welch. De nummers worden spaarzaam ingevuld met gitaar, citer, banjo en contrabas. Ondanks het trage tempo van de nummers weten de dames met hun zang en subtiele spel een gewijde spanning te creëren. De sfeer van slaapliedjes wordt slechts even doorbroken door de Peaches cover ‘Fuck the Pain Away’. We schrikken bijna bij de gedachte dat zulke zinnen ook uit de mond van deze onschuldige, lieftallige meisjes komen.

Glorie 123 van Het Gloren is het tweede album dat vanavond wordt gepresenteerd. Het Gloren is vooral Floris Schrama, die verantwoordelijk is voor alle liedjes. Tijdens de presentatie wordt hij begeleid door zijn zus op achtergrondzang en een aantal muzikanten uit andere Beep! Beep! bands. De nummers met band worden afgewisseld met kleine miniatuurtjes die soms uit niet meer dan één zin bestaan en waarbij hij zichzelf begeleidt op orgel. Liefde in al zijn verschijningsvormen is de leidraad voor de meeste liedjes. In zijn dictie doet hij denken aan Spinvis en ook Mondo Leone schiet door het hoofd. De spaarzame invulling met instrumenten en zijn verlegen, maar ook charmante presentatie zorgen voor een oorspronkelijk optreden.

Na drie bands die redelijk ingetogen spelen, ligt de verveling op de loer. Gelukkig is er dan nog Kanipchen-Fit. Empee Holwerda en zijn vrouw Gloria Williams op zang lijken op geen enkele wijze geïmponeerd door de locatie. Met een verleden in Lul en Solbakken heeft Holwerda al genoeg gezien om niet gauw meer ergens van onder de indruk te raken. Alsof ze in een zaaltje in thuisstad New York staan, sturen ze hun rudimentaire rock met blues- en funkaccenten de molen in. Het gitaarspel van Holwerda is daarbij afwisselend hard, subtiel en tegendraads. Sterk punt van de band is ook de tweestemmige zang van Williams en Holwerda. Beiden kunnen uitblinken doordat Maarten Kooijman, drummer tijdens het Nederlandse deel van de toer, zich dienstbaar opstelt.

Zo lijkt er een passend einde te komen aan een avond die ons terugvoerde naar tijden van onschuld, maar is het Kanipchen-Fit die deze droom ruw doorbreekt en ons weer terugbrengt naar de realiteit van alledag.

Dat die onschuldig ogende meisjes in oma's soepjurk 'Fuck The Pain Away' zingen, kan de betovering nog niet verbreken. My Bubba & Mi zijn drie lieftallige bosnimfen die geen blad voor de mond nemen, maar met de instrumentatie een stuk zuiniger zijn.

MUZIEK
Minimale folksongs uit drie keeltjes en op drie snaarinstrumenten. Een Deense, een Zweedse en een IJslandse ontmoetten elkaar in Kopenhagen, namen een plaat op in Italië en dankzij het kleine Beep! Beep! label is How It's Done In Italy ook in de Benelux verkrijgbaar en zien we het trio hier ook op de planken.

PLUS
Het Scandinavische trio maakt songs van grote eenvoud en dat is ook de charme. Dat en de zalvende schoonheid. Maar er is meer aan de hand, blijkt al snel in songs als 'My Intestants Are Warm'. Tot de achterste rijen van de bospan kun je een dennennaald horen vallen en zelfs de vele kinderen in het publiek houden de adem in. Dat doen de drie muzikantes ook, in opperste concentratie geven ze een zeer verstild doch intens optreden. Het klinkt allemaal zo lief, dat 'I Like To Hang You Up In A Tree' nog vertedert.

MIN
Dankzij praatzieke Sjoerd weten we wie van de drie My is en wie Bubba en Mi… Ze zingen Sing Me To Sleep, maar je krijgt het onbestemde gevoel dat drie sirenes je in slaap sussen en dat er dan iets naars gebeurt. Dat gebeurt er ook na veertig minuten als het trio klaar is met de set.

CONCLUSIE
Ook My Bubba & Mi is zo'n geval van de juiste band op de juiste plaats en op het juiste tijdstip. Tip: Wie geluk heeft, ziet ze vandaag nog een verrassingsoptreden geven.

I got turned on to the label Beep Beep Back Up the Truck back when they released “Reverence for Fallen Trees,” by The Black Atlantic. Having not browsed their collection for some time, I checked them out again last week and was very pleased to discover the release, “How It’s Done In Italy,” by Danish trio My Bubba & Mi. This is not ambient music, and doesn’t fit with the other releases reviewed here any better than Juanitos do. Similar to Juanitos, however, My Bubba & Mi do what they do with such verve and feeling that anyone who appreciates soul in music will have to check them out.

It’s tempting to call this old time music, and indeed the songs contain all the qualities that people love about old time; lyrics and melodies that evoke nostalgia and lost romance, acoustic instrumentation, two and maybe three part harmonies. The band know this well and capitalize on it – the hard copy design and image files are all candy-stripes and brown paper wrapping, along with grainy photos of the group that recall summers between the wars. But at heart this is contemporary pop music, and I mean that in the best sense. The opening track, “Gone,” is really a blues rocker that hits as hard as it does because the band aren’t afraid to slow down and put the power in the vocals. “After You” swaggers and “I Will Never Love a Young Boy Again” lilts and you could call either of them folk music, but there’s an alt-country and cabaret edge here that even the best of today’s string bands wouldn’t touch. This is neither a criticism of string bands nor My Bubba & Mi – it’s simply an observation that making music with heart is about doing what you do well and not getting hung up on what might pass for “authentic.” And these ladies have heart. It’s all over every track on this highly recommended release.

I honestly didn’t think I’d get my folksy fix this week from a band based out of Denmark who recorded their debut record in Italy and sing in English. But not only did I get my daily fix I think I found the best free download of the year (except for that Jonathan Burks’ record). A couple other blogs have written about this record by My Bubba & Mi but it’s far from a groundswell. The new record is called How It’s Done In Italy. And the band is made up of three beautiful women who play all the instruments (banjo, dulcimer, guitar, stand up bass, etc) and wrote the bulk of the songs on the record.

Last night I discovered this folky trio from Denmark on the 3voor12 Luisterpaal, a great place to listen to new and upcoming albums. I was immediately attracted by their gorgeous and promising albumart, and fortunately after a first listen it seemed to definitely have fulfilled its promise with ten songs with everything that you always love in scandinavian music and that make you want summer to start even sooner.
My Bubba & Mi are three girls from Denmark, Sweden and Iceland that became room mates in an apartment in Copenhagen. My Bubba & Mi is a special female trio that reeled me in with their intriguing mix of folk, expert finger picking and vocal harmonies so warm they’ll melt the biggest glacier. They themselves are far more down-to-earth. “lullabies from the countryside”, is what the ladies call it. The latter might be a more accurate description, as the trio headed to the sunny, wide fields of southern Italy to record their début. The story goes as follows. An Italian bar-owner was cycling through the city of Copenhagen on holiday. He was taken in by hypnotising sounds seeping through the window of a small bar nearby. Overpowered by his curiosity the man entered and saw My, Bubba and Mia performing for a small audience. A fan was born. The man invited the ladies to come to Italy to perform their music. “All right”, the threesome said and they left. A second invitation followed soon afterwards, this time to record a CD. “Agreed”, the answer was yet again and they packed their bags. Yes, that’s how simple life can be. ‘How it’s done in Italy’ is the mesmerizing début of My Bubba & Mi and furthermore the first Beep! Beep! Back up the Truck release from an international artist. The album will be released on March 8th on CD and vinyl. The 1,500 covers are – believe it or not – hand-made by the band members themselves. Each cover is a unique piece of art.
