My Complex Island

My Complex Island has grown accustomed to receiving comments about their moniker; while being a bit of a mouthful, it offers the intrigue, which band names generally strive for. In the winter of 2006, drummer Kyle MacDougall and singer Chris Liegrot made the decision to move to Long Island, NY, a place with a rich and complex history, as well as a mystique that is truly unique to itself. Unfortunately, the plans to move fell through. Rather then allowing the dream of moving to whither entirely, they immortalized it by naming their new band after it, which not only gave a constant reminder of their motivation, but also worked well in the capacity of intriguing would-be listeners to look a little deeper. With the unique name intact, My Complex Island has gone on to create a unique brand, playing fun, catchy music reminiscent of Saves the Day and local stalwarts New Found Glory.

My Complex Island (MYCI for short) formed in early 2007 when Kyle and Chris decided to move on from their previous projects for a clean slate, complete with a fresh sound and seriously dedicated members. With years of touring, recording, and business experience under their belt, the two set out to do right for MYCI; through taking note of past mistakes and the lessons most musicians have to learn the hard way, they focused on writing music and re-establishing themselves in the South Florida music scene. While recording “The Game EP in may, they picked up guitarist Nick Petakas and bass player Dan Nicoletti – long time friends who had both recently parted ways with their old bands, sharing a very similar vision with Kyle and Chris. The first show was in May and was quickly followed up with a 5-day tour of the state, nicknamed “Babi Tourz. After months of playing all of the Sunshine State, MYCI decided it was time for a second guitarist and found a perfect match in friend Josh McDonald, who had already seen time in bands with Kyle and Chris in earlier years. By the time the line up was finalized, MYCI was already one of the most popular local acts in South Florida.

Most recently, the guys of My Complex Island have spent the vast majority of their time promoting “The Game EP through what has become the lost art of flying malls, local shows, schools and essentially anywhere with a high volume of people and low volume of security. Over 3000 2-song samplers have been distributed around Florida by both the band members and by street team members around the country. These devoted fans loyally subscribe to the street team named MYCI Nation. Still to come for this young, though experienced band is an entirely promotional tour consisting of traveling cross-country with car filled with flyers, CD’s, stickers, posters – the essentials for guerilla style promotion – with the simple purpose of expanding the boundaries of MYCI nation. The purpose is two-fold in the fact that it also paves the road for national touring. While the band’s history is currently short, their willingness to do whatever it takes for their music, whether that be touring for 365 days of the year, or putting every paycheck towards recording, reassures them that their efforts will not go unnoticed.
