"My Escapade - Painted Faces (2011 EP)"

My Escapade may be a relatively unknown Australian band now, but after listening to their 2011 EP Painted Faces it can be predicted they won’t remain that way for much longer.
With this EP being only their second release, you could be forgiven for thinking My Escapade were a band that has been in the music profession for years – Painted Faces is a captivating and mysterious EP, with eloquent lyrics and whimsical vocals giving it an almost dreamlike quality.
Teaming up with winning engineer Paul McKercher (Eskimo Joe, Sarah Blasko, You Am I) has worked in the band's favour, with the EP sure to catch the attention of the indie rock loving general public.
The EP opens on "Soldier Child" one of the more instrumentally diverse songs, with a mellow sounding building up to a suspenseful chorus and ending with Jason Lucas showcasing how powerful his vocals are.
"Mechanical Love" opens with solid drumming and overlying guitar melodies, before Lucas once again steals the show with his mesmerising vocals.
"Burden" is also a stunning song, filled with emotive and thoughtful lyrics, providing not only an enjoyable listening experience but a journey, demonstrated in lyrics such as ‘I’m holding on for something, that takes away my breath, I lie awake impatient, as I’m put to the test.’
"Storm" closes the EP, with a sound slightly reminiscent of a mix between Eskimo Joe and The Sundance Kids. A slower, mellower song, it showcases a heavier instrumental emphasis with Lucas’s voice once again working well with the intricate lyrics to create a mesmerising effect.
Painted Faces is an exceptional second EP. The band have done a near flawless record with each song portraying a new dimension and if this is just a taste of what they are capable of, I expect we’ll be hearing more from them in the future.
Review score: 8.5/10 - Tahlia Pritchard - The AU Review

"My Escapade Review"

Our sights for the night were mainly set on My Escapade, as our encounter at Barsoma last Thursday was too short but very sweet, leaving me wanting more. Also on the cards for the night were the young sounds of two local bands, Locus Wimple and Royal Zephyr.

My Escapade did not disappoint, opening straight up with one of my favourites, Of A Future. They released this as their single back in November, and it's a good sign of what to expect off their new EP, which is to be released very soon. They played a few songs off their older EP 'Soul's Reflection' including The Rest Of Me, which is a real gem with a cracking bass riff I will never tire of hearing. They also pumped out a cover of the Gorillaz track 'Feel Good Inc' that worked really well.

These guys are professionals at putting on a decent live show. Better than decent in fact, 'cause they're pretty darn amazing. Such a well-polished act, one of their main draw cards is lead singer Jason's grand vocals. He's got his own astounding sound going on, an amazing falsetto voice, and has the ability not only to crank it up, but also to take it down a notch on some of the slower tracks. They've also got a really strong keyboard & drum set up, which really shines in their live show. - Bay FM 100.3 - The Sunday Washup with Dave and Kieren

"THISTY MERC, PORCELAIN, MY ESCAPADE"

THE HI-FI: 16.07.10
Although the venue is barely breathing when the four Taswegians that make up My Escapade take to the stage, they are quick to garner the attention of everybody in the room with a captivating opening stanza, their comfortable, self-assured presence justified with a strong and emotive set from start to finish. Recalling the more interesting moments of early Coldplay with the soaring vocals and bass noodling of circa Make Yourself Incubus, My Escapade have an obvious sense of song structure and know when a hook or crescendo is going to be at its most effective, lead singer Jason Lucas leading from the front with impeccable vocals throughout.

Bio

Since the release of their debut EP Soul's Reflection in February 2010 alternative rock band My Escapade have had a year that most emerging artists would envy: including record breaking downloads as iTunes Single of the Week (April 2010) and music synchronization opportunities with television networks and series (Seven Network & Australia's Greatest Athlete). Their music has been labelled as "energised", "well composed" and "hauntingly beautiful" (Rave Magazine, Brisbane), and the band's live show is "quick to garner attention" performing with a "comfortable, self-assured presence justified with a strong and emotive set from start to finish", (Time Off, Brisbane).

My Escapade dates back to early 2007, where brothers Jason and Simon James began rehearsing in an abandoned school, in Burnie Tasmania, with comrades Chris van Tholen and Alan Forrest. The band soon started performing all around their home state, establishing their local fan base whilst developing their sound, live presence and recording their first demos.

In 2010 the band left their island-state, basing themselves in Queensland, to strengthen ties with management and support the release of their debut EP Soul’s Reflection. This move also allowed for greater access to a larger variety of live music venues and a competitive independent music scene. Soul's Reflection was globally released through digital distribution agent Musicadium, and is available on iTunes, Nokia Music and Amazon, as well as many other online music stores.

On Soul's Reflection My Escapade worked with Sydney’s 301 studios and Australian producer Greg Stace. The EP achieved notable success for an independent artist, receiving regular community radio play across Australia with the help of Amrap and the AirIT program. Soul's Reflection gained favourable airplay throughout NSW, Victoria, WA and SA. In support of the EP launch the band also played at the inaugural Conrad Jupiters Cricket Challenge and in April My Escapade featured as an headline artist at the National Youth Week Launch in Victor Harbor, South Australia, as well as featuring on Southern Cross Ten's Landed Music, showcasing their music clips ‘All That Confronts You’ and 'A Whisper'.

In late 2010 My Escapade spent time in the studio to work on the follow-up EP to Soul's Reflection. Acclaimed Australian producer, Paul McKercher, who has previously worked with established artists such as Eskimo Joe, Sarah Blasko and Little Birdy, mixed the 6 songs with the band. My Escapade chose to send the tracks to the UK for mastering by John Davis, who has worked with artists such as Florence and The Machine - 'Lungs', and Editors - 'An End Has a Start'. My Escapade plans to release the Painted Faces EP in March 2011.

My Escapade has chosen to develop their sound, live show, and touring experience domestically before attempting to secure a series of showcase gigs in the UK in mid 2011.

The My Escapade sound is reminiscent of isolation and wilderness, with a unique arrangement that possesses similar elements, such as floating vocals, layered synths and delayed guitars, not dissimilar to the ambience of Australia's breakthrough artist The Tempertrap. The music is performed with through backs to Thom Yorke, and a sound derived from early Radiohead, with subtle mainstream lashings of Muse.
