De hardste band op Lowlands is het Nederlandse My Favourite Scar. Nu-metal à la Tool en Korn meets de grunge van Alice in Chains. ‘We doen het lekker in de botte stukken.’

De zanger van My Favourite Scar heet ‘Jay’. Punt. Zoals de gitaristen ‘Evan’ en ‘Dan’ heten, de bassist ‘Pat’ en de drummer ‘Stephen’. ‘Het zijn de namen waarmee we elkaar in de oefenruimte aanspreken’, zegt Jay, die na enig aandringen toegeeft privé gewoon Van Riel te heten. ‘We vonden ze wel toepasselijk als nicknames.’






De band bestaat al een tijdje, maar stapte pas begin augustus uit de schaduw toen het eerste album (ook My Favourite Scar geheten) het levenslicht zag. Wat daaraan opvalt is het ‘grote’ geluid: de ruige maar melodieuze nummers kunnen zó het stadion in, en tussen het meer dan groffe beukwerk is een aantal rocksongs verscholen die je radiovriendelijk kunt noemen. De strakke productie (het gitaarwerk op de voorgrond krijgt kleur met synthesizerviolen achterin) proeft als iets on-Nederlands, waar doe-maar-gewoon vaak de opnames bepaalt. ‘We hebben altijd groot gedacht over deze band’, zegt Jay daarover in een mooi zuidelijk accent. ‘Ik dacht altijd dat dat normaal was, maar dat ligt toch iets anders. Wij willen op zijn minst in de schaduw staan van de grote Amerikaanse rockbands, en dan moet je dat in alle segmenten van je muziek door laten klinken.’

Daarom ook is er lang gesleuteld aan de band. De bezetting was snel rond, maar hoe klinkt de ‘dark rock’ precies die de band wilde spelen? ‘We hebben vier jaar gewacht met de release, om alles goed te doen. Heel belangrijk daarbij was onze producent Oscar Holleman (die ook het succesgeluid van Within Temptation produceerde), die op cruciale momenten de discussie aanging. Moet daar wel een gitaarsolo? Zul je dat refrein daar niet herhalen? Dat is denk ik wel onze kracht: we hebben telkens mensen gevonden die snappen waar het heen moet, en die ons lieten geloven dat het beter was even te wachten dan voor korte succesjes te gaan. Het netwerk dat wij nu hebben, stelt ons in staat internationaal te denken en ons te verlaten op een lange-termijnstrategie.’

Lowlands is in die strategie (wees gerust, hij staat niet op papier) een opstapje voor de toekomst. ‘De muziek moet nu bij zoveel mogelijk mensen landen. Lowlands is ideaal, daar zijn altijd veel rockliefhebbers.’ Is het niet ook een lastig publiek, omdat er zoveel verschillende muziek-smaken in het publiek vertegenwoordigd zijn? ‘Volgens mij niet. We stonden een tijd terug in het voorprogramma van Kiss, dan weet je dat niemand voor jou komt. Maar als je alles geeft in je optreden, zijn er altijd mensen die later naar je muziek op zoek gaan. Mensen hebben een brede smaak, ik luister ook niet de hele dag metalmuziek. En ik weet zeker: ons aanbod is goed te pruimen.’ - De Pers Daily

Interview with

Jay (singer) of My Favorite Scar

The Dutch band MY FAVORITE SCAR has recently released their self titled debut album. Here follows an email interview with the singer Jay where he talks about where he finds inspiration and what motivates him to work with music.

Reflections of Darkness (RoD): How would you like to introduce MY FAVORITE SCAR as a band and your music to those who have not heard of you before?
Jay: MY FAVORITE SCAR is a dark rock band. This month we released our 1st album, which was produced by Oscar Holleman (Within Temptation, Gorefest). It features 11 tracks of dark music. Hard & heavy, and sometimes atmospheric & very melancholic, I think. The album was well received in the media and by fans, which is of course awesome. We're playing festivals over here in Holland right now and will embark upon our 1st headline tour this fall.

RoD: When it comes to influences, are there any bands or persons that have inspired your creative work as well as your style?
Jay: Yeah, so many. We all have very different influences, I think. As a band we're influenced by Rammstein, Alice in Chains, Tool. But also bands like Sevendust, Slipknot, Motörhead, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Down, Soundgarden, all kinds of stuff. As a singer I love the vocals of Chris Cornell, Robert Plant, Scott Matthews, Jeff Buckley, Miles Kennedy and Jan Chris de Koeijer (Gorefest).

RoD: What or whom inspires you when you write lyrics / create music?
Jay: Lyric-wise: Life really. We've experienced so many hard times during the making of this record, like you wouldn’t believe. We've lost loved ones, relationships ended and friends of ours ending up in hospital... It’s been a emotional rollercoaster ride, pfff. Every single song on the album has been taken out of our very lives, they're REAL! I write lyrics most of the time with our producer, Oscar Holleman. As far as the music is concerned, Evan comes up with most of the riffs and song ideas. We all add our ideas to that until we have a song that works. Oscar is the one who really pushed us to do the best we can and confronted us with good and bad sides when it comes to writing songs, which had a great effect on the album, as it turned out.

RoD: Do you need to be on a special mood to be able to write / create?
Jay: Yes. I need to connect on a deeper level with my emotions on a certain subject before anything worth writing down comes out. Sometimes it's kinda hard to reach that deeper level, other moments it’s easy. Sometimes it takes a bottle of wine (or 2). Haha.

RoD: Do you write mostly to express your feelings or are there other reasons?
Jay: Yes, it’s always about our feelings about a certain subject. That’s the essence, your soul. It's totally open, whatever works and feels ok, we'll try. Mind you - it has to fit the music. So no happy, happy, joy, joy lyrics for MY FAVORITE SCAR, it needs to fit the music like a glove.

RoD: What drives you and makes you keep working with music?
Jay: I don’t know. It’s just there. We need to express ourselves. And we respect each other a great deal, we each have our own part to play in this band and that works really well. We motivate each other and of course it’s a lot of fun too, when you’re on tour. But the music always comes first. We're aware that what we have is hard to find. There are not many bands who are so dedicated and who think alike as MY FAVORITE SCAR. Same goes for our producer Oscar, our manager CJ, and the people from Universal, our bookers, and other people that complete the team. They are all equally important and together we will go into battle.

RoD: If you could not use music as a creative outlet, what would you use instead?
Jay: Hmmm. Hard to say, MY FAVORITE SCAR takes up all of my time at the moment. I used to play lots of soccer before joining my first band. I just need to get certain emotions out of my system to function properly. I got great friends and I love my family, but life would be a lot less interesting if I couldn’t make music and put out records I think....

RoD: You recently released you’re in my ears brilliant debut album ‘My Favorite Scar’, what would you like to say about it? Like for example would you like to tell me something about your main source of inspiration and maybe describe the process of making the album?
Jay: Thanks, that’s very cool! A very tough question though! We worked on the album for 4 years straight. We put everything in this record. Inspiration music-wise can be found in other rock / metal bands, lyric-wise we focus on our lives, there's enough stuff to write 3 albums about, haha. No really, we have been through a lot, but that only makes us stronger. We got very good press for our album, it’s been out 2 weeks and we're in the Dutch Album Charts, which is kinda extraordinary for a metal/rock band you know. We didn't expect that, but it’s cool anyway. We wrote this one for ourselves, but it’s always nice to know when other people like it as well, of course.

RoD: Which song or songs are favourites at the moment and why?
Jay: I have several myself. All songs are special though, ‘My Favorite Scar’, because me and Evan wrote this for our mother, ‘Save Me’ because it stems out of a very, very black period in my life, ‘This Poison Love’ because we wrote this song with Ben Moody (Evanescence, We Are The Fallen) and I’m very proud of the end result. All songs are special, because they are very personal, really.

RoD: How does it feel to be out on tour with your debut album in the baggage where many people hear the songs for the first time live? What are your expectations and hopes for this tour?
Jay: We're playing festivals in Holland right now, bigger and smaller ones really. We love to play live and for as many people as we can. After the festival tour we're starting out on a headline club tour in September to December, about 25 shows all in all. In 2011, we're going to be on tour as well, and hope to do some touring abroad as well. This all depends, but that is one of our goals, to take our music out to foreign countries as well. Can’t wait! In September we will release the video for ‘This Poison Love’, which will be our next single (1st 2 were ‘Waste’ + ‘Kingsize’).

RoD: Would you like to tell me when your love for music begun and how you have worked to achieve your goals and become the musician you are today?
Jay: Oh that's happened really early on! I and my brother Evan started our first band when he was 13 and me 15, some years back. Before that we always were listening to our parent’s records. But it wasn't until we got interested in rock and metal music before we started our own band. We were totally into Thrash, Death and Black Metal. We still love the heavy stuff, as you can hear on our album! But we also learned how to put other emotions into music, such as melancholy, sadness and pure raw energy, with lots of dynamics.

RoD: When you listen to music, what is the most important for you, I mean do you listen and read the lyrics or just enjoy the music part or kind of take it all in at once?
Jay: Hmmm hard to say. I first listen to the song or songs itself first. I’m broad minded music-wise and can get goose bumps from listening to Led Zeppelin or Celtic Frost, or some cool singer / songwriter to Entombed or Slipknot. I take it all in. When I really like a band I start focussing on the lyrics more. They don't have to be brilliant, but when the songs make sense lyric-wise, they become more special to me. As a writer the lyrics to a song are the key. I have to sing them many times, so they better make sense, haha. On the other hand - I couldn't sing a song if the lyrics are crap. That's why it’s sometimes hard to sing a certain song, because of the lyrical content. If it describes something very important to you, its sometimes hard to re-live them.

RoD: How has your own taste in music changed through the years? What do you listen to today?
Jay: It hasn't changed much. Like Ozzy once said: "There're two kinds of music, music that sucks and music that doesn't suck". I am kind of broad minded, but I’m not as looking out for new bands as I used to be. I tend to rely more on the old masters, don't know. Albums that I am listening to right now are the new Deftones, Valley of the Dead (SWE), Rammstein, the latest Katatonia, Dark New Day and the last album by Scott Matthews.

RoD: What did you listen to when you were younger?
Jay: My taste did not change much over the years. As long as the music touches me and it’s sincere and honest, it’s ok. Even in my real death metal days I used to listen to cool ass bands as The Cult or Soundgarden as well.

RoD: If you were hit by a car and lie dying on the ground - but you got to sing one song that people would remember you for, a song that would sum up you, which song would that be?
Jay: Cool question - although I hope that won’t be any time soon ;) A lot of songs will qualify, there's so much great music... maybe ‘I’m on the highway’ by Frank Sinatra (a new version of ‘I did it my way’), haha. I hope that when I die people will remind me for my music and the person I am, really.

"Hoewel de band al zo'n 5 jaar bezig is, kwam My Favorite Scar pas recent aan de oppervlakte boven drijven. Met militaire precisie werkte het Nederlandse vijftal met ex-leden van ondermeer Feeler, Kingfisher Sky en Within Temptation achter de schermen keihard om de lancering van dit titelloze debuutalbum voor te bereiden. Daar waar de meeste bands eerst het clubcircuit proberen plat te spelen zonder ook maar een plaat uit te hebben, koos My Favorite Scar voor de overrompelingstactiek, die overigens enorm veel doorzettingsvermorgen en geduld vergt; eerst je songmateriaal op orde brengen, en vervolgens pas met een enorme knal je plaat uitbrengen en volop gaan touren. En het werkt. Recent deelde de band, die bij het grote Universal Records onder contract staat, het podium met onder meer We Are The Fallen, Kiss en Megadeth en zeker die laatste twee zijn toch niet de minste namen. In de tussentijd werden we lekker gemaakt met de prima single 'Waste' die werd gevolgd door het uitstekende 'Kingsize'. En nu is er dan het debuut. Geproduceerd door de gerenommeerde Oscar Holleman, want nogmaals: voor minder doen de heren het echt niet. En ook Holleman beet zich volledig vast in deze klus en was niet snel tevreden. Het resultaat is een plaat die door de heren zelf als 'dark rock' omschreven wordt. Wie daar geen gevoel bij heeft, kan het beste denken aan een mix van Alice in Chains, Rammstein, Metallica, Tool en Korn. Ongeloof? Luister zelf maar. De met zorg gearrangeerde en uitstekend geproduceerde tracks zouden zo aan de overkant van de grote plas voor beroering kunnen zorgen, zo goed steekt dit in elkaar. Lichtindustriele invloeden hoorden we destijds al in 'Waste'. De cover van The Cult's 'Rain' is dusdaning uitgevoerd dat het lijkt alsof Ian Astbury en co dit nummer destijds speciaal voor My Favorite Scar schreven. Jan Chris de Koeijer van Gorefest zorgt voor wat extra dynamiek in het hardere 'No Love Lost'. Om nog maar te zwijgen van de titeltrack 'My Favorite Scar': een ware tranentrekker over de overleden moeder van zanger Jay. Wat een emotie schuilt er in dit nummer! Kortom; de strategie van My Favorite Scar werkt en achteraf kun je alleen maar blij zijn dat de band zoveel geduld en doorzettingsvermogen heeft weten te betrachten. Perfect is niemand, maar dit Nederlandse kwintet komt met dit debuutalbum toch wel verdomde dicht in de buurt."

My Favorite Scar out of The Netherlands have just released their self titled debut album on the Universal Music Netherlands label to extremely solid global reviews and a rabid fan reaction overall. Having been in the musical ass-kicking business for several years now My Favorite Scar is no stranger to success and is one of Holland’s bigger and definitely better bands. MFS have toured Europe extensively and played with some small little indie bands nobody has ever heard of like Kiss and Megadeth. (That’s a joke for those of you that are sarcasm deficient.) Creators of the metal subgenre of “Dark Rock” My Favorite Scar are quickly being embraced by metal and rock fans all across this spinning mudball that we are all fortunate enough to be on. Very recently My Favorite Scar’s vocalist Jay and I spoke about the band and the new CD. Here’s the goods:

HMM: The new album just dropped. How is it doing?

Jay: Everything is going really well. We released the album on August 6th and we entered the Top 100 album charts in Holland immediately which is really something else because it’s not often that a metal band in The Netherlands makes it on the chart. So that’s cool.

HMM: What was the writing process for the album?

Jay: The album was written over a period of 4 years. The music we make we call it “Dark Rock” which is a name for all the different styles of music that we like. We are into the heavy stuff and the heavy songs but also the more atmospheric and dark mellow songs. We were focused on putting an album together like that so if we had 6 or 7 really heavy tracks then we would only use 4 just because we want have similar dynamics to the album as well. We wanted to have the best songs on the record and make it like a book. You have several chapters in a book and we wanted to build the album up like a book. Which reads from beginning to end.

HMM: So is this a concept album then?

Jay: It’s not a concept album but a lot of stuff happened in those 4 years while we were writing the album. We had some tragic deaths of people that we knew really well, our producer was in hospital a few times, and a lot of other stuff that happened along the way so we wrote songs about those subjects. We wrote songs about people you lose along the way, betrayal in relationships, and things like that. It’s not really happy stuff. It’s just cathartic to express yourself in such a way and throw every emotion out there that you have.



HMM: What was it like working with producer Oscar Holleman?
Jay: Some people might know him from his work with Within Temptation and he’s worked with several other well known bands here in Holland. He’s worked with many international acts as well. He’s really talented and I think he’s the only producer over here in Holland who knows how My Favorite Scar should sound. I think he’s the best producer around here and he’s become a friend because we’ve been so tight for 4 years recording the album. Making deadlines and making everything work, from writing the first songs to the album release, and with all that stuff that happened along the way. He was there from the very beginning and we owe him everything. So we are very grateful for his part in making the album.

HMM: Where did the band name My Favorite Scar come from?

Jay: Actually it started out as a song. We had a song called “My Favorite Scar” which is about the death of my mother. It’s not really about her death it’s more a song to remember loved ones by I think. Me and the guitarist Evan are brothers and we wrote this song together. It became a very important song in the band because the band members of My Favorite Scar have all lost 1 or 2 parents. It became a song which really describes the memory of someone that you were very close to but now is gone. That’s why it is called “My Favorite Scar”. The scar is not an open wound any more. It used to be an open wound, now it’s a scar, but because it’s such a special one we call it My Favorite Scar. We thought because of that theme it would be a great band name as well because it suits what we want to bring across as a band.

HMM: What’s up next for My Favorite Scar?

Jay: Well the next single will be “This Poison Love” it’s coming out this month and we will be recording a video for it as well. It will be on youtube so everybody can check it out. We wrote it with Ben Moody of Evanescence. He heard our first single “Waste” and he heard it through his manager and we got in contact with each other. Then we asked him to come over and if he wanted to do a writing session with us and he said, “Great”. So we sat in the studio for a day and came out with 2 songs and one of them is “This Poison Love”. So look for the new video to be posted in late September. - Hollywood Music Magazine (USA)

My Favorite Scar (met oud-leden van o.a. Within Temptation, Kingfisher Sky en F33l3r) draait al een paar jaartjes mee, maar het Nederlandse vijftal heeft recentelijk pas hun self-titled debuutalbum uitgebracht. Met claims dat ze beïnvloed worden door Metallica, Tool, Alice In Chains en Rammstein, creëert My Favorite Scar nogal hoge verwachtingen. Maar een band die eerder al de voorprogramma’s heeft verzorgd van KISS, Megadeth, Disturbed en ook gepland staat als opener voor Alter Bridge zou die verwachtingen nog wel eens waar kunnen maken.De Tool en Rammstein invloeden zijn meteen te horen op de openingstrack ‘Liberty Is Dead’ gevolgd door het eerder als single uitgebrachte ‘Waste’. Met deze twee nummers wordt stevig geopend en lijkt de claim dat de heren ‘dark rock’ spelen niet helemaal correct; dit is gewoon vette metal. Dit blijkt ook het geval met de rest van de plaat, zeker met nummers als ‘No Love Lost’ waarop gegrunt wordt door Gorefest zanger Jan Chris de Koeyer, en ‘Burndown’.Het ‘dark’ gedeelte zal iedereen die naar deze cd luistert zich wel in kunnen vinden, vooral bij nummers als ‘Lost’ en ‘Lie To Me’ waarin muzikaal een donkere atmosfeer gecreëerd wordt. Daarnaast gaan de teksten niet over de leukste dingen des levens; ‘This Poison Love’ dat geschreven werd samen met Ben Moody (We Are The Fallen) gaat over een niet al te beste relatie. Ook het lied waarmee het allemaal begon ‘My Favorite Scar’, dat zanger Jay en zijn broer, gitarist Evan schreven over hun gevoelens na het overlijden van hun moeder, bevat intense teksten.Dat de heren met deze plaat veel succes gaan krijgen staat vast. De productie door Oscar Holleman (Within Temptation, Gorefest) is van hoog niveau en de sound is internationaal en toegankelijk voor een breed publiek zonder erg commercieel te klinken. Kortom: My Favorite Scar is een band met veel potentie en gezien het hoge niveau van dit debuut, zullen er zeker nog meer mooie platen van hen verschijnen.Score: 4,5/5 stars

Alter Bridge, My Favorite Scar

Grunge is dood, lang leve alternative rock! Alter Bridge heeft woord gehouden: nu ‘ABIII’ in de winkels ligt worden de (lucratieve) zijstapjes met Creed en Slash even in de ijskast gezet en gaat alle aandacht terug naar Alter Bridge. Dit maakt dat de populaire Amerikaanse band sinds half oktober de Europese zalen plat speelt en daarmee doorgaat tot vlak voor Kerstmis. Op een sombere donderdagavond stonden zij in - een reeds lang uitverkochte – Trix. Het duurt dan ook even eer we de ingang gepasseerd zijn, maar nog ruim op tijd voor support act My Favorite Scar vatten we post voor het podium.

Er is de laatste tijd nogal wat te doen geweest rond deze Nederlandse band met muzikanten met een illuster verleden in Kingfisher Sky, Within Temptation en Feeler. Nog voor hun debuut uit was stonden ze al in het voorprogramma van Kiss, Nickelback en Megadeth. Oudgediende Oscar Holleman ontfermde zich persoonlijk over hun eerste wapenfeit en werd hun geestelijke vader. Een hype? Toch wel een fijne, konden we vanavond vaststellen. Met de energie van een aanstormende windhoos namen ze bezet van het podium om daar beknopt – ze speelden korter dan gepland – te illustreren waarom hun brandende ambitie in dollars moet omgezet worden. De single ‘Kingsize’ overdonderde al met vette riffs, maar wanneer gitarist Evan zich laat gaan in een wilde solo kunnen we niet anders dan toegeven dat hier meer aan de hand is dan een hype. Zanger Jay (broer van Evan) lijkt uit een gothic band geplukt (denk aan de voormannen van HIM of Anathema), maar vergis je niet, hij overstemt al dit geweld zonder moeite. We vonden het wel een beetje sneu dat men in die korte set toch nog voor een cover koos (‘Rain’ van The Cult), maar dat zorgde strategisch voor enige herkenning. De nieuwe single, het gevoelige ‘This Poison Love’, vormde een breekbaar moment in de set, maar tijdens ‘No Love Lost’ ging men er terug keihard tegenaan met beenharde Korn-achtige riffs. Dit vijftal dat zijn inspiratie haalt bij Metallica, Tool, Alice In Chains en Rammstein komt er wel. Ze kunnen nu alvast ook support van Alter Bridge aan hun palmares toevoegen en qua genre staan ze er zelfs niet zo gek ver vanaf.
