"This 'n' That"

This ‘n’ That: It was a pleasant surprise
to see The Mykal Gambull Band
performing at the Bessborough for the reception of theWorkforce Connex conference a couple weeks ago. Although the audience comprised of mostly government and industry types, Mykal did an amazing job of engaging the audience while playing covers and even a few originals in a classy setting. Gambull, as most of you know, is a do-it-yourselfer whose song ‘ForgetAbout You’ rose the charts and reached number one on MBC’s Aboriginal countdown - Eagle Feather News

"Beardy’s Band member top Aboriginal singer on Aboriginal Top 30"

BY ROD ANDREWS

“Another local boy done
good,” says Colin Perret,
promotions director of Missinipi
Broadcasting Corporation based
in Prince Albert.

Perret said Mykal Gambull,
who is originally from the Beardy’s
& Okemasis First Nation but now
residing in Saskatoon has the
number one song in Canada on
the National Aboriginal Top 30
Countdown.

“'I’m Your Man' has been on
the charts for 15 weeks, making
a steady ascent to number one
and that the musical countdown
is heard every Saturday at
4:05 p.m. on Aboriginal radio
networks and stations across
Western Canada and NWT,
including Missinipi Broadcasting
Corporation in Saskatchewan”.

Perret, who is from Duck
Lake, said that MBC Radio
is accessible in over 80
Saskatchewan communities,
including 97.3 FM at Duck
Lake/Beardy’s, 104.1 FM in
Saskatoon, and online at www.
mbcradio.com.

He pointed out that “I’m Your
Man” is the second single that
has been taken off Mykal’s debut
CD entitled “Volume 1”.

“His first single, “Forget
About You”, hit #1 on Missinipi
Broadcasting Corporation’s
Saskatchewan Aboriginal
Top 5 Countdown this past
February and stayed on top for
six consecutive weeks.

That same song was also the Real
People Playoff Champion for
seven weeks. It was put into
heavy rotation and was highly
requested.

“It’s quite an accomplishment
to have the most popular song in
Saskatchewan then in Canada,
both within a span of four
months,” said Perret.

"Saskatchewan man makes it to No. 1 on the radio"

BY KELLAH LAVOIE HERALD STAFF

A Saskatchewan man’s music is
climbing the charts.
Mykal Gambull of Beardy’s and
Okemasis First Nation was No. 1
in Canada in the National Aboriginal
Countdown last Saturday.

The 31-year-old blues and jazz
musician hails his love of music
back to his childhood, when his
father was in a gospel band and
his uncles also played instruments.
“It’s been a life long passion as
long as I can remember.”
He said he has been avidly involved
in music for the past 15 years and has made it a career for the last 10.

Gambull did not have much support in high
school he said his teachers told
him to stop wasting his time.
He stuck to his dreams and said
while in school he played with a
number of his friends and even
had a band with his brothers
called Pothole Road.

His first CD was only released
to radio last fall and two of his singles,
“I’m Your Man” and “Forget
About You,” have both been in
high rotation and been number
one on the chart.

The CD was released to the
public this spring and on June 21
he will have his CD release party in
Saskatoon.

He said the past four months
have been a whirlwind of activity,
with his song gaining air time on
radio and climbing up the charts.

He said he never expected such
success.

“I thought the song would only
play every now and again.”
He has his own studio in his
home, and he credited the
Saskatchewan Arts Board for providing
money to help make his CD,
something he said he is grateful
for.

“I just want to work and do
what I do — I will continue to
play until my hands are broken.”

Bio

Mykal Gambull Volume 1 is the title of the debut album. With this album Mykal wanted to show his diversity as an artist. Tracks on the album consist of Blues, Pop, Rock, R&B;, Soul, Funk and Gospel.

June 21st, 2008 had seen the official release of Mykal Gambull Volume 1, Mykals first and only studio album to date to the public. Volume 1 was released in advance to radio 6 months prior in January 2008. The album was a received with admiration through native radio in Canada. Recorded in Saskatoon over a 3 month period, the album contained two number singles. Forget About You, and R&B; tinged song of love and trust, was the first single released. The single quickly received airplay on Saskatchewans only native radio station, MBC Radio. It was long before the song was being requested which in turn led to the debut on the top 5 music charts. After 6 weeks of hanging on to the top spot the song finally crawled back down the chart. But it did not go slowly. The single remained for 5 more weeks. The second single, Im Your Man, entered the Aboriginal Top 30 Countdown on Winnipegs largest native radio broadcaster, NCI on March 5th, 2008 at number 29. From that point on it was a slow and steady climb as it ascended toward the number one position. A position that was held for 2 weeks. Im Your Man enjoy a 23 week stay on the NCI music chart.
