The new project from Redboy is an ambitious concept album, a musical drama telling the tragic tale of a young musician, talented but tortured, lost between dreams and reality (based on the life of Brian Wilson). This Modern Pop Opera is the culmination of more than two years of relentless writing by the four multi-instrument musicians.
The musical universe will include fairy tale pop, with orchestral arrangements (more than 30 instruments on some songs) evoking Mercury Rev and Bernard Herrmann (Hitchcock 's soundtracks), the haunted ballads of Nick Cave, the haunted melodies of Arcade Fire set amongst a “surreal, haunted cabaret” not far from Tom Waits or Flaming Lips, similar to Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. Several guest musicians take part in the project, including MERCURY REV, ALAMO RACE TRACK, BLACK HEART PROCESSION.
At the same time, the group is working on a performance with a movie director and cinematographer on a kind of cool Opera pop, with reproduction of a 50's American City and projections on Skyscrapers, a production that is neither too large nor too intimate, adapted for the clubs and festivals of the international rock scene. The idea is to focus on a strongly visual presentation, incorporating central concepts into every aspect of the album and performance, from the CD case and insert, to posters, T-shirts, merchandising, and this time... to the sets, costumes and performance, with the help of Félicie Haymoz, a young illustrator bases in New York, who is coming off working on visuals and character design for a forthcoming project from Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited) and a full-length Max and Co. animated feature.
After 2 years writing and recording in several studios, the 13 song album is fully recorded now, and the band gives you a preview of this project, with several rough mixes.
The band is on the way to mix the album this summer with different producers, including John Congleton (Grammy nominated producer, Modest Mouse, Polyphonic Spree, The Roots,...) , Tucker Martine (Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab for Cutie,....), Frans Hagenaars ( Bettie Serveert, Alamo Race Track,...) and probably Dave Friedmann (Grammy award winner, MGMT, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev ,...)
