"Silk and Daggers Review"

Sexy, haunting and deliciously danceable, My Ninja Lover is a welcome addition to the Australian breakbeat scene. The debut CD ‘Silk & Daggers’ boasts an amazingly mature and developed sound, and contains thirty-three sumptuous minutes of intricately layered vocal breaks. Winning the Nokia Connecting Beats competition earned this Brisbane trio a trip to London and a mastered EP- and this is the succulent fruit of their labour. The competition’s judges chose very wisely in this case, and the victors have produced the best new Australian breakbeat release I’ve ever heard.
Opening with the track ‘Shudder’, My Ninja Lover can’t hide their ability to create true songs. The beats are dark and electronic, with countless glitchy electronic textures adding colour to the infinitely musical arrangements. While the instrumental bed itself would hold up on its own, the female vocals offer an evocative melody that soars over the track. This is the magic weave that My Ninja Lover repeats with ‘2x2’, and once again in ‘A Day Off’. It’s no surprise to learn that all three members are seasoned musicians, Porl DeVille and Manta Ray having spent the last five years touring with Zephyr Timbre. Porl and Chris Buckridge have been working together under various monikers since 1996, and their collective experience manifests in highly evolved and evocative music.
2x2 is my favourite on this release, though each track has been produced with equal care, attention and finesse. I’d like to ask Manta Ray just how she manages to sound cute and sinister at the same time in this instance- the track truly epitomizes the CD’s title. There are some nasty breaks, soaring slower vocal moments and some subtly applied delays & stutter effects with overall a great sense of ‘whole'. ‘Tin Cat’ starts off instrumentally like something The Baggsmen might have jammed out while working as The Hive, before taking a dark cabaret swing with the addition of the melody. The vocals are Shirley Bassey meets Portishead, cast over a spattering light-handed d’n’b groove. The jazz is there and remains suggested as the vocals back off, with keyboard harmonies peeping through the mix during the instrumental breakdown.
‘A Day Off’ is thematically similar to 4Hero’s ‘Another Day’- a soothing anthem for the day-job escapist. The groove is a spacious programmed breakbeat, awash with pads and cruisey synths reminiscent of Adam F’s album ‘Colours’. The vocal melody is slow and delightful, and is complemented by some unexpected arpeggiated synths. The four tracks thus far are examples of great composition and album continuity. Manta squeezes so much character and depth into her performances, and there is sufficient difference between each song to hold your interest the whole way.
The Scuff’s Techtonic mix of ‘Shudder’ has more of an old-school electro feel and is more restrained than the original. Nevertheless it’s a worthy inclusion, and picks up in intensity gradually as the vocals are progressively consumed by the popping synth lines. Qubism’s remix of 2x2 takes a fantastic breakbeat and replaces it with a four-on-the-floor House/Trance beat, complemented with retro spy-genre inspired guitar chords. The intro smarts of Faithless, but that tapers out when the guitars and vocals come in. If remixes will allow My Ninja Lover to reach a wider audience quicker that’s great, but the sophisticated interplay of poly-rhythms is sorely missed in this version.
Taking or leaving the bonus remixes, the four album versions on this disc are highly original, well polished examples of atmospheric breakbeat bliss. If you like the vocals and moods of acts like Portishead and Moloko and have a passion for breakbeats with lavish arrangements, make My Ninja Lover your next listen.

"Silk and Daggers Review"

Brisbane’s soulful electronic trio My Ninja Lover have been sitting on this EP for a while now, and fans will be delighted to hear that Silk & Daggers is overflowing with ideas and sonic delights. Opening breaks number ‘Shudder’ sounds like it’s almost in search of a fourth dimension, such is the density of its production, while ‘2 x 2’ follows with a slightly deeper, more progressive, exploration of breakbeat territory. The synths are warm and enveloping, while Manta Ray’s voice soars over every track beautifully, whether in subtle or sassy mode. The funky d’n’b workout of single ‘Tin Cat’ is a standout, while Qubism’s dreamy house mix of ‘2 x 2’ also shines brightly. - Time Off

"My Ninja Lover Live @ Big Day Out 07"

Then, My Ninja Lover step on to their first Big Day Out stage like they’ve been doing it for years, and the addition of a new member on V-Drums certainly helps flesh out their silky smooth sound today. The swelling crowd really start to respond when they drop epic breaks number ‘2 x 2’, a track which allows the amazing Manta Ray to unleash her full vocal power. An intercontinental shout-out to temporarily departed bassist Chris Buckridge segues into a new funky-house flavoured number, allowing new bass man Dan to flaunt his slap-bass wares to the MNL faithful. - Time Off

"My Ninja Lover Live @ The Zoo 07"

One band that has had their sound nailed from day one is My Ninja Lover, and even a recent revolving door of bass-players doesn’t stop them from delivering another stellar set to an appreciative dancefloor tonight. New man on the bass Boi looks like he’s been in the group far longer than the two week crash course which preceded tonight’s show, allowing guitar and synth player Porl DeVille and frontwoman par excellence Manta Ray to work the stage as they always have. Manta really does own the stage with her whacked-out dance moves and incredibly powerful voice, with a stack of impressive new material revealing a slightly sunnier edge than crowd favourites like ‘2 x 2’ and ‘Tincat’. - Time Off

Bio

“If I said that you had a nice katana, would you hold it against me?” Anonymous

My Ninja Lover are as stealthy and sexy as their name suggests. Having emerged from the multifarious music scene of Brisbane, Australia, the trio draw from years of experience, converting past forays into a brand new blend of sultry sonics and brazen beats. Equal parts seductive and vigorous, the MNL sound is a constantly evolving enigma.

While the band might be relatively new on the scene, the individual members are already more than accomplished. Manta Ray and Porl DeVille toured for years as part of nationally acclaimed band Zephyr Timbre, with many a large-scale event under their belt: Big Day Out, Livid, Falls Festival and Homebake to name a few. Porl has also worked with Chris Buckridge in the celebrated 90s outfit Trace Element. Collectively, they have toured with and supported the likes of Jamiroquai, Ben Harper, Michael Franti, Nelly Furtado, Hybrid and Moby.

Blending sensual and melodic sounds into a mix of downbeats, breaks and drum ‘n bass, MNL have been likened to Kosheen, Lamb and Moloko although drawing straight comparisons is an exercise in futility. With femme fatale Manta Ray on vocals, Porl Deville and Chris Buckridge pull the band together with their unique instrumental stylings. The result is an idiosyncratic flow of vocal-driven tracks that set a new direction in electronica. It’s an amazing live experience, but it sounds great on record as well. It’s not for posers; it’s for music lovers.

From the get go the band started at a sprint, carving out a niche for their new identity. After they were voted the winner of the 2004 Nokia Connecting Beats competition for the standout track 2 x 2, they were whisked away to London with a mastered demo. This debut EP, dubbed Silk and Daggers, would go on to achieve local success, being added to national radio station Triple J, reaching #2 on the iTunes Electronica chart, and also winning the Q Music award for its single, Tin Cat.

My Ninja Lover are intent on furthering their musical grip beyond the sunny shores of Australia. Chris Buckridge, now a stealth member, has set up a sister studio in Amsterdam, a prime position to both influence and be influenced by the most forward thinking of music makers.

As a live act, My Ninja Lover are simply magnetic. Their energetic sets have made them highly sought after on a global level and as such, they’ve played alongside both local and international piers including Crazy Penis, Pendulum, The Drummatic Twins, Pepe Deluxe and Kosheen. Keeping their shows vibrant and fresh, they continue to collaborate with different guest musicians, meaning no two performances are ever the same.

Right now, Ninja things are steadily on the rise. What is certain is that a set of 2 X 2 remixes (featuring reinterpretations from Tommy Trash, Scott Hopkins and Jono Fernandez) and a new follow-up EP will be released in 2007. So keep yourself ready for more beats, more breaks, more collaboration and more sass and sexiness from Australia’s most dangerous new band…
