Bio

Write about what you know, they say. That’s good advice for any young band, and mostly it pays off big time. Trouble is, what Australian band My Scarlet Darling's singer Andrew Petersen knows about is death, disappointment, anxiety attacks and paranoia. My Scarlet Darling is a three-piece that conjures up a dark, moody and compelling mix of guitar-rock, dance beats and intensely personal lyrics. While they're not without a sense of humour, these tracks prove the band is not joking, with muscular rhythms and searing riffs combining in a way that insists you pay attention. The subject matter may be generally bleak but perversely, the tunes aren’t.

First off is ‘Anaesthetise’, a seething, intense meditation on the frustrations of an ordinary life and the inability to be satisfied with what you have. It’s a showcase of The Red Letters’ swirling, layered guitar, double-strength bottom end and intelligent, meaningful songwriting.

Then there’s the crisp, focused attack of ‘World Won’t Wait’, a classic 3-minute pop song that will have you singing along before you begin to wonder just what it is that the band are singing about. The chorus bites hard and holds on, and the track seems made for radio. Take a listen, you’ll see what we mean…

And there are more gems waiting to be discovered – the REM-like ‘The Heathen In Me’, the thickened guitar exuberance of ‘Turn To Black’, the scathing ‘Kings Of Agit-Pop’ and the sheer defiance of ‘Come Out Swingin’’. Something for everyone, then.

This is the sound of something important that comes at a time when so much new music is derivative, lightweight fashion-scene drivel. With a starting point of classic songwriting, razor-sharp production and 100% conviction, My Scarlet Darling may well be the next new band to grab you by the throat and demand you listen.

My Scarlet Darling will be playing shows in Europe and the UK until the end of 2005; their debut album will be released in the UK and Europe in October 2005, with the first single due out in September. In the meantime, these downloads will have to suffice to let you in on what’s coming.
