"Album Review - 4 out of 5"

Review: You can usually tell an independent, DIY record by its sonically dissonant texture and lo-fi style, but My Sister Ocean's newest release Nucularboy doesn't sound anything like a self-produced record. Clean, crisp and beautifully mastered, listening to Nucularboy is like listening to a professionally cut album, when really, all of the work was done entirely by the Edmonton-based rock duo. The record opens with the fast, frenzied title track, which boasts a simple melody complementary to all of the chaos. Don't Change The Station and You And Me also heed to the duo's mix of precision and edginess, giving rise to the two catchiest songs on the album. By far, Nucularboy is one of the sharpest records to come out of Edmonton as of late -- a prime example of what local musicians are capable of producing. - Edmonton Journal - Amanda Ash

"Duo To Watch"

Welcome to the underbelly of the musical sea, tuned to the key of awesome. Way, deep down here, you’ll find one of the most elusive, breathtaking creatures: My Sister Ocean.
I’m not just sending love to this tripwire twosome ‘cause they’re Canadian (I don’t play nationalistic favourites like that). Their velvety, grinding method of sonic experimentation is leaking with genius akin to morning dew or drips of sweat. Holden’s bass and gravelly singing will spoil your silence to perfection, and the smackdown of Eugenio’s drumming takes you right out of your comfort zone and into somewhere beautiful. Who would think such an earful of bliss could arrive from a band that doesn’t even depend on a guitar?

My Sister Ocean spat out an album earlier this year; let’s just hope they keep it going. For two dashing boys with great hair, they’ve got a lot more power than you’d expect, and a little more darkness than you may be used to rubbing shoulders with. But they’re a torpedo right through your brain, leaving a five inch hole in diameter on your occipital lobe. Don’t ever expect to listen to the duo without having every crack of your soul examined, and every last rusted edge of your brain scrutinized. My Sister Ocean is the shrink without the couch, the morphine without the needle — a devastating bodily experience that doesn’t even leave a scratch. What more can you ask for?

Of course, they’re not all about the mood and gloom. One hit from their slamming songs and you’ll be riding on the high wave of rock past midnight. Whether you’re looking to philosophize or turn it up a notch, they’re an endearing choice. These men are proof that living with a dream is the best way to flare up your talent; they’re always straddling the fence between reality and success.

This very August, they’ll be touring in their maple leaf homeland, and, if I’m lucky, maybe stopping by my city. If you can handle it, then get ready to be sucked into the vacuum of their demanding, surrealist world. Take a listen to Please Don’t Say It’s So, a track that’s got a firm grip on what they’re all about. - Bigger Than Beyonce

"My Sister Ocean Breaks New Ground"

My favourite Canadian rock boys are back with a new single, and a new break onto the charts. Their latest splash in the sea, Am I Wasting My Life, is a throbbing, honest piece.

My Sister Ocean has injected me with musical morphine. Again.

This song is an affront on apathy; the listener is forced to reconsider, reevaluate. The vocals hit you like air-borne alcohol. From the tip of the drumsticks to the vibrating guitar, all resonates with a heavy dose of reality. The song makes me taste smoke. I see lonely roadways lit up with the eerie glow of streetlights. I hear a soul seeking clarification. It’s the purest beauty, and the most devastating pain.

Thus far, the single has hit #50 on the Canadian Active Rock Charts, a first for this budding talent. Let’s push them even higher up the scale. - Bigger Than Beyonce

Bio

2 guys who started jamming in 1996 and can't stop. We sometimes get accused of having better stage banter than songs, but we take our music more seriously than we take ourselves. If you took your two favourite bands and put them in a blender on "smoothie" mode, My Sister Ocean would be the band that's writing songs about how your blender is better than their blender since it has no "smoothie" mode. In 2012 we collaborated with some rappers and it was pretty fun so in 2013 we're collaborating with even more people - with a May 14th release date for our new EP called "coLAB."

We've played big festivals such as Campus Chaos and the Grey Cup 2010 Main Stage, opening for Big Wreck, Hinder, Bif Naked, State of Shock, Emerson Drive, and in 1998 we even opened for Sarah Harmer's old band Weeping Tile. (we were known as Cousin Henry back then)

Frontman Holden Daniels is also an award winning music video director, directing videos for metal acts such as Suspect 3 and Jezibelle, and 'punk turned CBC folk hero' Jay Sparrow, as well as My Sister Ocean.
