Bio

Mystery’s been writing poetry since elementary school. He started to ‘freestyle’ in 1996, which he only did in front of family and friends. Mystery’s earliest influences were Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Outkast, and Makaveli. Once in high school, he saw older kids banging on the walls and making beat boxes with their mouths. He jumped in the circle and was torn up. He figured it was because either he was new or stepping into a different turf. After being defeated, he went home and battled every song on the radio for at least two weeks. He didn’t stop until he felt he had a formula down. Two weeks went by and he went back to the same spot where he had been defeated. This time he went off with no one to compete against him. If he didn’t win that day, he still had a plan. What was the plan? “I don’t remember!” he laughs.

After ‘freestyling’ for a while, he decided to write and record his first studio recording at a music lab in Austin, Texas. He had some offers from Hollywood, California, but felt he was too young at the time. Instead he stuck with performing at local churches, promotions (opening up for other artists), competing at clubs, talent shows, or just featuring on underground artists’ CDs.

Some people go into great detail when writing about their background. Mystery just talks about what he wants to remember. He believes we didn’t all grow up in “Whoville”, so keeping that in mind, he feels he can relate to anyone. From the person who has no heat, air conditioning or a place to sleep to the person who seems to have it ‘all’, but just isn’t happy (because on the inside he’s dying). He even feels he can relate to those who love God or to those who have a grudge with God.

Rapping to him is like therapy because he can get everything out. At the same time touch some one who is going through what he has been through and maybe give guidance if that’d be. Some songs tell stories and others tell you his determination. He feels universal with his abilities to write, being able to write about various subjects. He’s not just your typical ‘one subject’ artist. He’s always open for new sounds and creating a new genre. He feels that God has put him through things that he has been through for a reason.
