Bio

-------Mystic Rebel is a soul shakedown family. Formed in 2003, Mystic Rebel is dedicated to the recreating the origin sounds of Roots Reggae and Dub, performing at a high standard, while spreading the message of Truth, Rights and praise to his majesty. Beside recording and performing original Roots Rock Reggae compostions, they also perform an amazingly accurate and compelling live tribute to the forefathers of the genre, The Wailers. Their tribute show is no lookalike novelty act, but rather an extremely talented group of singers and pro musicians that play classic Reggae from the heart. The live group, which began as Wailer-worship features superb singing, deep Dub grooves, Binghi drum chants and inspiring Rock Steady feel. After two nights at the 2003 Bethlehem Music Fest, as featured artist, festival organizers said "Great performances both nights...a big hit!". Invited back, they will be performing at Bethlehem again this August. Ulana's on South Street owners said recently, "We loved it. Sounds just like the Wailers...amazing!--------The key ingredients...the musicians, all personally connected by friendship and a sincere love of the music. Cape May,NJ born Michael Jay sings the songs that made Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and Jimmy Cliff international superstars, while bringing spirit and reverent conciousness to the lyrics, and chants. Beside leading the chantdown, he plays guitar, keys and percussion onstage, produces the groups live show and recordings. Partner Brad Pennock plays "skank" guitar and percussion onstage, writes lyrics and handles booking. A Toronto born artist, lyricist, musician, photographer and image archivist, Brad utilizes an eye for asthetic detail as the group's production coordinator . ------The group also features two talented female vocalists, Coco Soleil and Susan Richardson, who faithfully reproduce the now classic melodies and harmonies. Originally from Chappaqua,NY Richardson brings a warm, jazzy, soulful vocal personality that glues the harmonies tight, swaying colorful dancing...all the while keeping the good vibes flowing. Hailing from Montreal, always dynamic CoCo sings lead ocassionally, adds percussion as well as traditional African and modern dance flare to the Rebel show. She also plays in a French music duo "Les Touterelles whose CD will be available at Rebel shows in the future. The group's newest member, Raijah Madsen sings the high parts and brings joyful energy and a tight soprano that sprinkles the sound with life.------------ The singing is one of the most exciting aspects of the show, with both ladies nailing the parts, grooving and interacting with Michael's soaring oratory. The result is an audience that experiences the sound of loyal and committed friendships manifesting musically in fantastic vocalizing. When they hit a big three part harmony it brings you right to seventies Jamaica, with a smoothness that only female voices can provide.-------Supporting frontman Jay, skanker Pennock and the ladies, is a backing band that is supa-tight. The youthful and enegetic group with drummer Dan de Prophetis, versatile stylee guitarist Peter Colyvas and bassie Brandon Kania, the latter both accomplished standouts from Jay's student roster. Guest Reggae artists appear with the band on occasion including percussionist Bret Andrew, Jah D.S.M., Kaseaopia, members of Ihi Yahn Ihi Arkestra, members of Henry Turner and Flavor, energetic chatter Sinister Mr.IHBA, and many more. --------This is a group with real depth and style, evident in any of the many dub jams that occur inside classic tunes like "Heathen"and "Want More." With vocal and musical freedom to interpret the material, Mystic Rebel often surprise with unique arrangements. From crowd pleaser sing-alongs like "Redemption Song" and "No Woman No Cry" to classic Tosh songs "African" and "Equal Rights" to older favorites like "Small Axe" and "Caution" they always deliver. This is a show that will leave you smiling, dancing, singing and shouting out for your favorite songs, breathless with Irie.---------- While sucessful as a tribute, Mystic Rebel is also a thriving original and studio band, incorporating all the talents of it's members and their various influences, and producing a fresh result. Their debut CD "Vibrasta" features tracks cut in Michael's new Pro Tools 6.7 home studio, doing everything in-house. Their original songs are relevant and revealing, in the present and honest. From the sweet harmonies on "Warwinds" to the funky lyrical assault in "Shadow of Babylon" these songs carry. -------Co-written by Pennock and Jay, the songs were all recorded in 2005. Along with the original material, the CD features covers of classic Wailers favorites like "Duppy Conqueror" adopted group anthem "Rebel Music" and a special version of the Grateful Dead's "Ripple" done Roots style and is sure to bring a smile. -----------With nonstop gigs, a growing fanbase and a band that keeps getting better and
