"CD Review - Homespun by Nadia Sunde"

by Cas McCullough, July 2010
I have always be drawn towards alternative, folksy music and it is the style of music that I write and play most often. When I finished my Master’s degree I was offered a contract with The Woodford Folk Festival as a marketing and communication analyst and spent three happy years blissing out on fantastic music at the festival. So, when I had children, I tried to find music that departed from the ever popular Wiggles tunes (which, by the way, I loved too... the first two times they were played). I came across a fantastic honky tonk CD that ended up being played to death in our car and when I listened to Nadia Sunde’s songs, they took me back to that gorgeous New Orleans CD we’d spent many happy hours replaying on road trips. Nadia’s style is fun, blue-grassy, folk-inspired, toe-tapping and joyful! - Mumatopia

"CD Review - Homespun by Nadia Sunde"

by Andrea Baldwin, Sept 2010

Nadia Sunde’s CD Homespun is a visually and aurally sumptuous offering. The cover features Nadia sitting on an old-fashioned board swing, rainbow- striped stockings and lacky-sided boots depending nonchalantly from a bunched-up patchwork skirt of reds, blues, stripes and laces. The same vibrant joy - a sense of things rich and bright brought together in serendipitous collisions - colours everything about this CD, from design to song choice to instrumentation to production.
Anyone who has a nodding acquaintance with goats and/or geese will enjoy the imagery of Homespun’s opening track, The Goat and the Goose. It’s followed by the toe-tapping rock’n’roll of Red Rattler, a good old-fashioned train song complete with Doc Span wailing plaintively on harmonica. There’s lots of fun calypso percussion on The Mango Tree, courtesy of Doug Gallacher, and Silas Palmer’s accordion gives a lovely waltzy feel to the lullaby Little Boat. Other instrumental highlights include Silas again on piano (sweet and dreamy for Rainy Day Dream, funky and playful for The See Saw Song), and Sarah Calderwood’s lilting whistle on Boom Ditty. Michael Fix deserves a special mention for playing at least eight instruments, providing beautiful backing harmonies, and doing the recording, mixing and production. I particularly enjoyed the children’s voices and giggles provided by Asher and Mia. And of course Nadia’s beautiful voice, warm and versatile, makes every song a joy.
To paraphrase Molly Meldrum: do some little people a big favour - bring home Homespun! - The Folk Rag

"Parents and kids love Nadia Sunde's New Album 'HOMESPUN"

"Our family love Homespun. The kids sing along and know all the words, and the musicianship, stunning vocals and diversity of musical styles make it an easy listen for the parents too. Yay! No more Wiggles and Play School CDs turning my brain to mush! Homespun is on high rotation at our place and we've also been lucky enough to experience Nadia as a live performer and she rocks!"

Tim Baker, on behalf of Kirsten, Vivi (9) and Alex (4).

"This album is one for the whole family to enjoy, not just the littlies.
Most of the other music out there drives you (the parents) nuts after a few
repeats, because it's too basic for the adult ear. The Homespun songs are so
well balanced and have depth, which leaves EVERYONE in our car feeling
enriched and joyful, even after multiple listenings."

Allan Mourad, Archie (2)

"With young kids it's a great music to have. Meaningful lyrics, catchy tunes and most importantly the kids love it to bits and we do too. Great to have a CD we can all enjoy!"

Rob Bare, Sari (4) and Raeka (18mths)

Nadia Sunde music for families

“Nadia and her music light up a room! Our whole family can’t help but dance and sing along with her. She’s joyful, uplifting, magical and lots of fun.” Sascha V. (Mother of Olive, 4 and Sammy, 2)

Nadia Sunde loves to inspire audiences and has certainly found her calling in the realm of family entertainment. Hailed as ‘a breath of fresh air’ in the world of children’s music, Nadia is deliciously heart- warming, soulful, quirky and hilarious good fun. She is a gifted and internationally-awarded songwriter. Her joyful compositions resonate with wonderful storytelling and inspire moments of heartfelt connection between people of all ages. She is a sublime vocalist, an accomplished musician and an engaging comedian and actress. As a performer for children and families, she is simply ... captivating.

None come more qualified than this mother of two (Asher, 6 and Mia, 3). Beginning her performing career some fifteen years ago, she toured the Australian folk circuit as the lead vocalist/bass player of folk/roots group ’Spot the Dog’.

Recording two albums and winning vocalist awards, she soon became a festival favourite, which continued as she recorded and toured her first solo album (The Spark) in 1999. During her time within the Australian contemporary music scene, Nadia was acclaimed for her powerful stage presence, beautiful songs and divinely warm and soulful voice.

Nadia was an early childhood music educator for ten years between 1992 and 2002. She taught with and facilitated training seminars for the acclaimed Kindermusik program and in 1996, designed and created her own program for childcare and kindergarten centres entitled, ‘Music Time with Nadia’. This engaging program incorporated music, movement, drama and exploration to create a joyful environment of learning through play.

More recently, Nadia has become a household name in her home of Southeast Queensland for her work as a presenter/producer with ABC Coast FM (91.7 Gold Coast, 90.3 and 91.3 Sunshine Coast). Her Saturday night show, ’Into the Groove’, was a weekly highlight, featuring new releases, music interviews, live performances and local artists. Her work with the ABC, lead her to a role as Musical Director and Producer of ‘The Gift’, a collaborative album featuring some of Australia’s finest female artists in support of the Australian Mothers’
Milk Bank. She is also a recognised voice over artist and a highly sought after Master of Ceremonies for her skill, not only as a public speaker, but also for her a quick witted repartee.

It was with the arrival of motherhood, that Nadia discovered her true delight in writing songs for children. From the magical everyday moments spent in the company of her own children, Nadia was inspired to create heartfelt and connected music for the whole family. The result of this inspiration is ‘Homespun’, an album that celebrates the magical space that exists between grown-ups and kids. Not an album purely for children, but one that parents and grandparents can also delight in.

Since its release in late 2009, ‘Homespun’ has already received due recognition for being one of the most treasured children’s albums to emerge on the Australian music scene. Nadia won 3rd place in the Children’s Category of the 2009 International Songwriting Competition for her track ’The Goat and The Goose’. The songs from the album became the inspiration for ‘Nadia’s Wish’, a live musical theatre experience for families, which debuted at the State Library of Queensland in January 2010, delighting audiences over a three-week season. Work is currently underway on a series for children’s television and Nadia is collaborating with other children’s artists, all- the-while composing material for her second album for families.

As a solo artist or accompanied by her ensemble ‘The Best Band in the World’, performing in a theatre, at a festival or presenting her music workshops to children and their families, Nadia brings a unique, good-humoured experience to all those who join her. She lights up a room, presenting real and heartfelt music for kids and grown-ups alike and facilitating those magical moments when music is shared between people of all ages.
