"Singled Out: Nadine Loren's Boys of Summer"

Today Nadine Loren tells us about her cover of Don Henley's classic "Boys of Summer" from her forthcoming album "The Naked 80's". Here is the story:

When thinking about what tracks to include in my new album "Naked '80's" (featuring remakes of my favorite songs of the '80's and a couple of originals about the '80's that we wrote), I will admit I at first shied away from Don Henley's monster hit "Boys of Summer".

I recall arguing that it was just so recognizable worldwide, it was a Grammy winning song (for Best male Rock Vocal Performance), and it had been on the Charts with both Don Henley's version and The Ataris remake! Not to mention that it was such a cool song - how could I possibly remake that with any air of originality?? Well Peter Asher (my amazing Producer) insisted we sing through it a couple of times until we got it sitting nicely in my voice. So the door wasn't closed on the song - but it wasn't wide open either.

Then, over a glass of wine it dawned on me that nothing feels more like summer than the music of the Gipsy Kings! I grew up listening to their music while Barbecues were sizzling, beer was being opened and a friendly game of Summer Cricket was being organized in our garden. So what better fit for "Boys of Summer" than a Gipsy feel, with a wall of acoustic guitars, a lyrical guitar solo and lots'n'lots of Palmas!

Adding the operatic vocal was, admittedly, a more difficult sell. I think Peter was just humoring me when he let me sing along to the track "just to see what happens"... But luckily we all agreed the combo worked, and it gave the track the truly original feel we were searching for!

I have no idea what Don Henley thinks of it, but I hope he likes it - I had such a crush on him as a kid I'd be heartbroken if he didn't!

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself right here!

"Naked 80's' by Nadine Loren"

By Jon Duck (5/6/2011)

Nadine Loren’s new album, Naked 80’s is off the charts. She brings a mix of alternative, indie, and pop music to an array of classic songs from the 1980s.

We’ve seen many covers of famous songs and we’ve seen many cover albums. The thing that is so interesting and creative about Naked 80’s is that it is one artist devoting an entire album to a decade. This is so revolutionary.

She sings ‘Boys of Summer’ by Don Henly, ‘Love Bites’ by Def Leppard, ‘More Than This’ by Roxy Music, ‘Wouldn’t It Be Good’ by Nik Kershaw, ‘Blame It On The Rain’ by Milli Vanilli and so much more.

She takes an alternative spin on all of these songs by making them her own. When one listens to any of the renditions of these classics it is easy to forget who made them so popular. She does such a good job of making the song seem like her own creation from beginning to the end.

The Naked 80’s will be released May 31, 2011. - Celebrity Cafe

"One's To Watch In 2011"

Nadine Loren, Singer/ Songwriter.

After scoring an acting role in the 2004 NZ-filmed comedy Without a Paddle, Nadine moved to LA and recorded her new album, Living In Wonderland, which was nominated for the LA Music Award for best pop album of '09.

I've sort of always been a singer, I even learned how to speak English on the stage (having come to NZ at age 8 from Germany). I am also the middle child in my family, and always made up songs to entertain my brother and sister, so I have been writing music since I can remember! I have had a job of some kind since I was 13 years old – starting at Foodtown and then moving on to do odd babysitting jobs, waitressing, working at my Dad's dental laboratory, and even working as a receptionist at a real estate firm! My Dad insisted I get my law degree as a 'safety net' instead of plunging into music head-first, so thanks to him I even worked at a law firm for a while! I often liken my time in LA as a crazy wonderland like I have fallen down a rabbit hole, and the world keeps spinning around me in its weird and wonderful way! My sound is theatrical and fun and quirky. It doesn't really fit into any specific genre of music, but it does have pop and folk influences. Some might call it Euro-pop due to some of the French and Italian lyrics. I would just call it fun alternative pop. I've heard people describe my music as being similar to Regina Spektor and Feist. I have been lucky enough to have shows all over the US and Canada. A tour through Europe would be cool too. Paris is one of my favourite cities in the world! - Cleo Magazine

"Nadine Loren - Living in Wonderland (by Alex Rasmussen)"

The Swiss born singer, Nadine Loren, who is self proclaimed as someone who “doesn’t really fit the mould” loves music. She started to act at the mere age of eight, but music then later grabbed her passion. She later made her C.D. “Living In Wonderland” that was recently nominated for the “Best Pop Album of the Year” by LA Music Awards, two great accomplishments.

Nadine’s music is very unique; she puts some of this on her upbringing in New Zealand and Germany. Every song is different than the one before it, giving her album an amazing variety. Some of the songs on her album are slow, emphasis given to the lyrics. Other songs on her album are fast-paced, providing the perfect dance track.

Her songs vary in many ways. Her lyrics feature French, English and Italian, which makes her stand apart from others. The style of her music is another unique characteristic that many will adore. The combination of many elements, such as techno, pop, rock and others are placed perfectly together creating a catchy tune.

Some of her songs, like “Bang Bang”, have lyrics that make you listen again, and again, questioning the meaning behind them “She fell in love, ... and took all she had and then some....where is he now”

Evidently, these lyrics are excellent, and fit like a puzzle piece with the tune.

All in all, Nadine Loren is an excellent listen, and many would enjoy her music. She has already proved herself to be a very versatile artist from her album, and will continue to shine as she continues her music journey. - Soundline - Canada's Newest Music Magazine

"Living the Dream"

Los Angeles-Based Kiwi singer Nadine Loren knew she'd achieved something special on her debut album Living in Wonderland when Ron Altbach, one-time songwriter for The Beach Boys, told her so.
“It was so nerve-racking because I was sitting right in front of him as he was listening to it. He could see I was nervous and said to me, 'I never thought I'd say this but I really like it',” the 31-year-old recalls. “I think he was expecting me to be a Britney Spears wannabe and he was really glad to hear I wasn't.”

Born in Switzerland, but raised in Germany then Auckland, Loren moved to LA six years ago after a minor role in the 2004 movie Without A Paddle alongside Seth Green. Five years on and the former Epsom Girls Grammar student is still based there. While she still acts, her focus over the past few years has been on her first record – an eclectic and quirky combination of electronic European pop and folk.
Loren still refers to herself as 100 per cent Kiwi and phones home regularly for a “boost of reality”, but admits she may never have made the album had she not been living in L.A. She explains that she was singing in a restaurant when an anonymous financial donor offered to write her a cheque after she told them that music was only a hobby and she didn't have enough money to record a demo. “I can't imagine anyone in the restaurant in Auckland saying, 'Hey here's $20,000. Get yourself a demo made',” she laughs. “The cool thing about LA is that people have been brought up without any sense of the tall poppy syndrome. “People want to stand out here – that's why I called my album Living in Wonderland. There's always people trying to be different.”

However, Loren says Auckland will always be home and she can't wait to get back here next week, even if it is just for four days, to introduce fellow New Zealanders to her wonderland at a special showcase. - NZ Herald

"Nadine Loren - Album Review"

Born in Switzerland, raised in both New Zealand (Auckland, to be specific), and Germany, and currently living between New York and LA, Nadine Loren is, much like English Sri Lankan are rapperette M.I.A., a genuine citizen of the world- an individual more tied to friends and family than specific geographical locations. Don't draw any major musical comparisons from that description though. Half singer/songwriter, half actress, on songs such as 'Cyberspace,' she ties together gymnastic vocal trickery and an almost theatrical sense of melody and orthodox folk, rock, pop, and indie electronic sensibilities. Speaking on her cell from the streets of LA, she takes some time to reflect on her past. "Music has always been part of my life... [While I was growing up] I did [Rudolph] Stiener school education, which is basically very heavily music based." Musically focussed on voice, Loren also plays piano and guitar, leaning towards using the two instruments to write her music, then devising ethereal lyrics to rest gently upon her base instrumental melodies. Having written songs and acted professionally from a young age, Loren remembers, "having visitors come around, and we'd put on shows for these poor guests, who would have to endure them." Scoring acting parts in Hercules, Xena and eventually Without a Paddle, Loren relocated to America six years ago to seriously pursue music and acting, shifting her central focus between the two on an irregular cyclic basis. "I think it works in spurts," she laughs. "I'll be doing an acting project. Then I'll be doing more of the singing." Currently promoting her debut album, Living In Wonderland, Loren was nominated for Best Pop Album of the Year at the 2009 LA Music Awards and was described by Ron Altback (pianist/songwriter for the Beach Boys) as having, "a completely original voice." Two of her songs also recently feature alongside Duffy and Amy Winehouse on European compilation CD Bad Girls Don't Cry. Still, the question poses itself, is she really living in Wonderland? Her answer, delivered without a hint of hesitation, "Definitely!" - Rip It Up Magazine

"Album Review: Nadine Loren – Living in Wonderland"

Nadine Loren is an up and coming singer/songwriter with an unusual yet effective style. Living in Wonderland has been nominated for “Best Pop Album of the Year” by the LA Music Awards in 2009 and I can see why.

I wasn’t too sure what to expect, after reading her bio which describes her music as folk, electronic, pop and rock music and with lyrics in three different languages.

The album starts off with the track “Cyberspace” which is light and uplifting and the count down throughout the song is a refreshing change despite lyrics talking of relationship failures. This sets up the album and gives you a real sense of what you are about to listen to

The next track worth mentioning for me is “Wonderland” which introduces the European flavour with lyrics in English, French and Italian. This adds a real spice to the track and the underlining electronic bass is infectious. This song has received international recognition.

“Blue Sky” is another track that stands out with a change in tempo. This is a lot slower and the lyrics seem to go deeper into Nadine’s soul. You can hear the heart and emotion in her voice and it just draws you in.

I have to say that I was impressed with the overall layout of this album and it’s a great little listen. - Music.net.nz

"NZ Musician - Album Review by Greg Pebble (Feb 2010)"

NZ Musician - Album Review by Greg Pebble (Feb 2010)
Opening with a super lightweight Kelly Clarkson-ish song called Cyberspace, “Living In Wonderland” continues with 10 more catchy, girly-pop tunes that typically have elements of Alanis Morisette and Garbage. The Swiss-born Kiwi singer/songwriter is currently based in the New York and her album has been out in the States for over a year - in mid ’09 it was nominee for Best Pop Album of the Year at the 2009 LA Music Awards. Look Me In The Diamonds has a contagious chorus, Bang Bang starts with a Jack & Jill verse in allusion to Wall Street’s fallen, Wonderland has a more rocky feel and a little breathy French vocal. There are moments of dreamy vocal with an operatic twist as the drums kick in on Big City and Blackbird. While deliberately light and fluffy this is a nice pop album with well-composed backing for Loren’s capable vocals and enough subtleties to keep it interesting. - NZ Musician

"Kiwi Actor Takes Flight in City of Angels"

Five Christmases ago Nadine Loren was sitting in a Shortland St corporate law firm, racked with stress.

She stepped, then leaped into a career in acting and singing, and is now pinching herself after releasing her first album, and rubbing shoulders with Amy Winehouse and Duffy on a recent European compilation.

She left her old job on a whim, spurred by one comment when she was acting a minor role in the film Without a Paddle.

"I was on my first film set, and a producer said if I was serious about acting, I should move to LA.

"I'm a planner. I don't change quickly. Yet my partner and I quit our jobs, left for the States and everything began to click into place," said Loren.

Swiss-born, raised in Germany and a child immigrant to New Zealand, her loyalties will be stretched further when she sings the United States national anthem in front of 20,000 people at Madison Square Garden in January to open the most American of events, the National Bull Riding Competition.

She is briefly in Auckland to celebrate Christmas with her parents.

Born Nadine Berdecker, she took her mother's maiden name when she felt her own sounded too clunky in the mouths of Americans.

While the job of hunting for acting and singing work eases each year, she has endured numerous trials.

"When I arrived in LA I didn't know what to expect at all. I turned up at the premiere [of Without a Paddle], which was a red-carpet event, in a Ford truck, which was smoking, loud, and had no first gear ... people must have been thinking, 'Who is this?'

"I've done some odd jobs to get by. I've even done hand modelling. I also featured in a poster for the film for The 40-Year-Old Virgin and was paid 500 bucks. I thought it was a good deal at the time, but didn't know it was actually a huge film."

She said New Zealanders did well in LA because they spread themselves across the film set: "Kiwis ... don't limit themselves to one category. When they're not acting they're doing scripts or line producing or music."

She thought that "never in a million years she would produce an album". Released in November, her songs combine folk, electronic, pop and rock music elements and feature English, French and Italian lyrics.

Loren knows that if acting and singing jobs dry up, she could always return to law. But with a follow-up album planned for her debut, Living in Wonderland, she finds that prospect unlikely: "I would be miserable if I weren't entertaining."

"Music Interview: Nadine Loren"

Nadine Loren has one of the most intoxicating voices that easily pulls you in when she sings. She has all the right elements that will take her to the top of her game; strong vocals, enormous talents, and extremely beautiful look. But, it is her passion, love for music, and drive/dedication that are her strongest points. In this recent interview with JC Internet Indie Radio, Nadine shares her success and passion for music with our members. Enjoy this wonderful spotlight.

*Isaac:* Hi Nadine. Welcome to your interview with JC Indie Internet Radio Community. Now that 2008 has officially ended, what are your reflections of the year 2008 for Nadine Loren?

*Nadine:* *Thanks Isaac, well, 2008 was a pretty amazing year for me full of massive changes, particularly when you consider that until March ‘08 I was stuck in a full time corporate job as General Counsel for a Finance Company! I quit my job in March, and straight away began planning a writing session with my music producers… six days later we were all in a cabin at Big Bear, where we pretty much wrote most of what’s on the album.

We recorded it throughout the year (I was lucky enough to have AMAZING musicians including Joey **Waronker** of Beck on drums, which made a huge difference!) and then produced, shot and thankfully completed three music videos in time to show them at the record release party in November, which was at Les Deux in Hollywood, where we also did a live set of 6 songs for the 400 guests who were there! It was a huge year for me, which left me so grateful for the week off, doing nothing but lazing by the pool and sunbathing in New Zealand over Christmas!!*

*Isaac:* Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?

*Nadine: **Nena was, without doubt, my absolute idol when I was about 5 years old! My sister and I would put together this band with our friends, using pots and pans as drums, the TV remote a microphone, and the fabulous clothes and jewels of our very elegant and glamorous 70 year old neighbor as costumes… we would perform 99 Luftballons and imagine the crowd roaring with applause, which all seems very real and very inspiring when you’re 5 years old!

Other influences include Kate Bush for her interesting lyrical lines, Joan Sutherland because she’s probably the greatest coloratura Soprano there ever was, and I probably listened to Barbara Streisand’s “One Voice” album more than a million times when I was about 10 years old, so that undoubtedly inspired me to try and sing with as much honesty and heart as she does!*

*Isaac:* Let’s talk about what you feel Nadine Loren will bring to the music industry?

*Nadine:* * The music industry (at least in the US) has changed so dramatically within the last decade, and though there’s a lot of doom and gloom about the future of the industry, it has in many ways, made it a lot easier for an independent artist to be heard by many, as there are so many more non-traditional platforms that you can use to market your music now. For instance, you can sell your CD’s through the likes of Barnes & Noble, Starbucks or Wholefoods, you can get exposure through film and TV or commercial placements, you can approach companies directly for corporate tie-ins, and you can do live gigs where you might not have expected it now, like the Zoo or a winery for instance. My music is definitely quirky and different, so it suits non-traditional marketing, so I’m just riding the wave and trying to write honest music that will hopefully make people feel something when they listen to it!*

*Isaac:* If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?

*Nadine:* * David Foster because he’s such a legendary Producer and Songwriter who seems to highlight an artists uniqueness rather than squashing it! Plus, he just seems like such an interesting guy, I’d just sit there and listen to him talk and soak it all in!*

*Isaac:* How would you describe your music to others?

*Nadine:* * My music combines** folk, electronic, pop and rock music elements and feature English, French and Italian lyrics so it **definitely has a European influence**. Though I utilize operatic influences to add a quirky theatricality to my melodies, it’s not the focal point – I use Opera like an instrument... Two of my songs were picked up by a European compilation “Bad Girls Don’t Dry” also featuring Duffy and Amy Winehouse, so it’s along similar lines I guess!***

*Isaac:* What type of feedback have you received from your previous releases?

*Nadine: **“Living in Wonderland” is my first album, but the feedback has been great so far! I’m being played on 45 Radio Stations across the US, I have live gigs planned in NZ, Australia, LA and NYC, Wally Calliero and Mark Farina have played remixes of my music in clubs of Paris, London, Hungary, Vancouver, California, and Chicago, and my music can be heard on two separate compilations! "Wonderland, Downunderland"

Also entering the broadcast today is Swiss-born indie pop siren Nadine Loren with selected tracks off of her debut album, Living in Wonderland. In this, her initial offering, the transplant to Los Angeles crafts a quirky collection of sounds that is remarkably distinct and yet strangely familiar... just like her voice. It's somewhat of a challenge to put Wonderland (or Nadine for that matter) in a clearly defined box. While the "indie pop" tag is convenient, it really doesn't do enough in describing her sound. She masterfully blends rock, pop, electronica and folk en route to defining her own, unique musical experience. We're just glad she invited us along for the ride.

Bio

Swiss born, Kiwi singer-songwriter Nadine Loren is a trained opera singer and accomplished pop singer. Her debut album “Living In Wonderland” was nominated for Pop Album Of The Year at the 2009 LA Music Awards. The pianist and guitarist is also a former lawyer and actress. Loren does not ?t snugly into any box.

Loren straddles these many multiplicities while infusing her music with elements of opera, pop, rock, jazz and country on her new album “The Naked '80's.” The album, produced by legendary producer Peter Asher pays homage to her favorite tunes of the decade, tunes that left an impression on Loren as a
young girl.

Now based in Los Angeles, Loren does extensive touring, both in the US and in New Zealand and
Australia. In her (limited) downtime Loren is committed to making a difference and helping others. She sits on the board of Glamour Gals, an organization that teaches leadership to young women and provides makeovers and companionship to the elderly, and is involved with the Make A Wish Foundation (NYC), the Lu Parker Project, the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis as well as APLA with their annual Art Project Los Angeles.

ABOUT "THE NAKED '80's":
“The Naked ?80's” is produced by the legendary hit-maker Peter Asher who has produced 12 Grammy
Award Winning albums and has twice been voted “Producer of the Year” by the Grammy's. Peter was the Head of A&R for the Beatles' Apple label and former VP of Music Entertainment at Sony.

“The Naked 80's” celebrates some of the decade's best songs, but gives them a modern twist, completely stripping them of all their synthesized sounds. The ?bare' songs are then reinvented to have a fresh sound with all real instrumentation.  What makes these remakes even more unique is that many are hauntingly infused with opera.  It's a must listen.
