Bio

Nadyas 101 Candles Orkestra is, quite simply, one of the
most infectious bands you are every likely to see. With influences
As wide and varied as Eastern Europe to the South Pacific, Nadyas
101 Candles Orkestra truly stand alone and defy categorisation. To see
their show, is to see the culmination of years of experience touring
throughout Europe and their native country of Australia.

Nadyas 101 Candles Orkestra is a flexible line up of musicians led by singer and musical director Nadya Golski, who play Eastern European and Gypsy music blended with elements of jazz, blues and chanson, as well as Island music from the South Pacific, and whose members come from different ethnic backgrounds, all being Australian. The cultural influences and expertise of all members add up to a wonderful whole, as all the elements and stylistic flourishes are mixed in the melting pot to produce their own unique sound. Nadya sings in many different languages, Polish, Macedonian, Romany, French, Spanish, English and dialects from the South Pacific Islands.

They launched their debut CD to packed audiences at the Sydney Opera House. Since then they have recorded another album, Crazy Moon, which received Australia Council funding.
Nadyas 101 Candles Orkestra have signed non exclusive national distribution deals with MGM for both albums. They sell their CDs in concerts, festivals, and through the website. Tracks from both albums receive regular airplay on ABC National Radio, community stations around Australia and various radio stations in Europe. They have performed in major venues and festivals around the world such as WomAdelaide Festival where they were chosen to perform for the media promotions and in the highlights programme, Woodford Folk Festival, Bellingen Global Carnival, Sydney Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Sziget Festival in Hungary, Edinburgh Fringe Festival UK, and other festivals and venues in the UK and France.

Just a little bit about Nadyas background Nadya began her career studying with internationally renowned avant garde Theatre Company in Poland, Gardzienice in Poland, after she completed highschool. She then went on to study theatre in Paris where she performed in Jazz clubs. When she came back to Australia she co-wrote an album with her brother in South Pacific languages called Haiwe Driva. This project relates to two years her family spent in the remote Highlands of Papua New Guinea, where her father worked as an anthropologist. Nadya was sent to tour Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific Islands by the Australian High Commission who combined support with other companies. The tour was a huge success and Haiwe Driva was a best seller. In this period Nadya recorded and produced two other albums: Moka and Erere, which are available from her website. With this material, Nadya toured Khazaktahn in 1996 where she represented Australia in the Voice of Asia Festival and won the peoples choice prize.

In 2002, Nadya returned to her Eastern European influences and recorded her debut album in this field (Nadya & Gigas 101 Candles Orkestra) which she launched at the Sydney Opera House to packed audiences. Since then she has produced Crazy Moon in the same genre (Eastern European /Jazz /Chanson /Latin) and has co produced Heaven and Other Places which is mostly sung in English and partly in French and purely in the genre of adult contemporary / Soul / Jazz.

An alchemy of spicy melodies and hypnotic rhythms from the Turkish influenced Balkans with melancholic romanticism whose influences are not easy to peg. Virtuosic performances reflect the purity and integrity of musical traditions from Eastern Europe, steeped in old cultures, handed down from generation to generation, and shared with a multicultural generosity which is becoming a postmark of modern Australian musical identity. Multi-cultural, eclectic but above all seductive and fun.

Nadya's husky voice weaves like smoke rings around many different languages including French, Spanish, English, Romany, and Slavic languages such as Polish, Russian and Serbo-Croatian. She has a deep, rich voice and an arresting stage performance - and the multi cultural elements express traditions from Macedonia through to Russia and Poland with English, French and Romany linguistic references to name a few.
