"Hope promo review"

With a little over 10 minutes to make your mark, you'd better give it all you've got, everything and the kitchen sink. Well, NAILED COIL pack enough variety into “Hope” to ensure interest is piqued for those who pitch a tent in the Death/Metalcore camp.

Casting their net to catch scaly morsels from Death Metal and Hardcore currents, these wee muckers succeed in amalgamating those sounds, adding a pinch of Thrash to the mix (but not much.) The result falls well into positive territory, despite the fact that NAILED COIL cram as much as they can into three songs, they don't sound cluttered. The mainstay of their sound is the melodic fettling that engraves itself over the anvil hard riffage, most of which chuggs along at a sprightly mid-pace. Some of the melody borrows from the Hardcore heritage, but for the most part, it's got that whiff of lake and fjord, along with plenty of dual harmony and skewed scrawl ending the motif.

Harking on the Hardcore, as is usually the case, the vocals carry the main influence. Barked vocals belt out brace after brace of pissed polemic, thankfully that bastard bane of Metalcore; clean, angst filled bollocks, doesn't see the light of day, instead a more grounded Grind/Black shriek escapes its cave, let's also mention the gruff yet soulful singering that shows even hard men have feelings too. Gang shout choruses top the larynx larks on “Dead Man,” which is straight NYC HC in the vox box. Over all, the vocals manage to maintain a straight faced countenance with more than enough variation to show a bit of passion in what NAILED COIL are doing.

Them there drums are all a clatter, beating out a steady tattoo when required but also incorporating time changes, percussive underpinning and the occasional thunder of double bass bulldozing. Choosing to add emphasis rather than just performing levelling duty, the skins communicate as opposed to decimate, that said what they're saying is delivered with a drill sergeant's clout, there is no room for misunderstandings. The bass performs a complimentary function to the drums, it twangs along flatly, adding a cable-like thwack grumbling aft.

“Hope” fulfils its purpose, there as album in the offing and the promise here bodes well, it ain't my preferred listening but I'd be surprised if on the strength of this, there isn't a clamour for the hammer.
