Bio

LA-based electronic musician, multimedia artist and mad scientist collector Steve Nalepa combines deep dub bass, glitchy breaks, bioacoustic atmospheres and beautiful sinewave melodies to create his patented brand of ambient glitch dub. Known for his vast and eclectic array of artistic collaborators — cultivated and acquired through years of producing spectacular audiovisual events and sharing bills with some of the worlds best electronic musicians — Nalepa is considered a key node in the west coast audiovisual scene and holds the appropriate title of Flavorpill’s “beat guru”.

Nalepa has performed at The Do Lab Stage at Coachella 2007, produced tracks with legends such as Bill Laswell and Pharoah Sanders, rocked it at Flavorpill's Friday's Off the 405 series at the Getty Museum, and shared a bill with Amon Tobin, Cut Chemist and DJ Spooky at Walt Disney Concert Hall. His Flatlands CD/DVD drops in October on Native State Records featuring groundbreaking videos from by such luminaries as Benton-C Bainbridge, Brian Kane, Brian Ziffer and Biomorphica with remixes from a diverse, all-star lineup that includes The Glitch Mob, Ruxpin, Deru, (a)pendics.shuffle, David Last, RD, RaNDom, Slidecamp, Kero, Rena Jones, Kraddy, Aerostatic, Nosaj Thing and Bluetech.

Nalepa is also one of the 100 artists featured on the upcoming Visionaire Issue #53: SOUND, due out in November. The SOUND issue consists of five 12-inch vinyl records, picture discs imprinted with images that contain 100 minutes of sound content from artists including Lalo Schifrin, David Byrne, Michael Stipe, Bjork, Malcolm McLaren, Ryuchi Sakamoto, Johnny Marr, Courtney Love, Yoko Ono, Kanye West, Dolly Parton, Grace Jones, Gisele Bundchen, Helmut Lang, Towa Tei, Matmos, Mark Romanek, Adam Horowitz (Beastie Boys), Mark Mothersbaugh, Antony & the Johnsons, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, among others.

VJ Synesthete (Todd Thille), a member of the Istanbul based VJ collective artificialeyes.tv, has been gaining notoriety worldwide for performances with custom-built OpenGL software and guerilla video street actions. He performed at the opening of the Minimalist Jukebox series at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and won the inaugural Maker Faire VJ Battle.

The two artists have collaborated on an audio/visual experience based around Nalepa’s forthcoming Flatlands double disc. They have performed together at ISEA in San Jose, Burning Man, as part of the Silver Lake Film Festival in Los Angeles, at Live Cinema Nights in Istanbul and at C23/AVIT in Berlin. Over the sensuous tones of Nalepa’s dubbed-out glitchy atmospheres, Synesthete weaves an inspired technicolor panoply of generative real-time 3D imagery alongside ground-breaking video by such luminaries as Benton-C Bainbridge, Brian Kane, Brian Ziffer and Biomorphica who have been commissioned to make clips for the CD/DVD release of Flatlands.
