Nama Kaites

 Los Angeles, California, USA
BandJazzSinger/Songwriter

I'm Tom Waites meets Tori Amos. Never boring, all emotion, very sultry. Not much anger, lotta whimsy, classical/jazz/country on the keys, a breathy voice, and a shot of rotgut whiskey.

Biography

I grew up in an 8,000 person town with one light. My dad played gypsy guitar and my mama listened to jazz. I played the upright piano as a kid, and sang along to all the songs.
When I was 18 she moved to NYC and was briefly in a trip hop band with producers Icon, and the played at the Knitting Factory, Open Air, Tonic, and Cetera. After they split, I split too, all over the world, traveling, writing, drinking and thinking.
A few years later I moved to Los Angeles, and found it an amazing and lonely lonely place. To soothe the isolation I bought a cheap little Yamaha and downloaded classical sheet music off the internet- Chopin, Rachmaninov, Otte- to play around with, but found myself writing more. So... that's the story, but with all that said I really just loving music. I feel like I bleed it out... if nothing else, my stuff is from the heart.

Lyrics

In the Twilight

Written By: Nama Kaites

You held open the door in the twilight
You held open the door in the twlight

Julian, you blind me
The calm before storm
You don't believe in voodoo
The supernatural
You're from another world
Can't believe you'd find me
Knocking on your steamy window

You held open the door in the twilight
You held open the door in the twlight
I held my breath til you said good-bye
I felt a warm wind walking home tonight

Ahhhhhhh-ah
I felt a warm wind tonight

Julian, you've bound me
A fate you can't ignore
An alchemist, a shaman
A rose by any name
You're from another world
Had a dream you found me
Knocking on your window

Ahhh-ah
You held open the door in the twilight
You held open the door in the twilight
I held my breath til you said good-bye
I felt a warm wind tonight

Tie Me Down

Written By: Nama Kaites

Look at the stars out tonight
I'm positively reeling
And I'd do anything to be alone

I'm high as a kite
I've gotta crazy feeling
You will be one to take me home

Tie me down
Tie me down
Tie me down
My feet won't touch the ground

I just know when it's right
When I'm floating to the ceiling
And all I see is you and you alone

Tie me down
Tie me down
Tie me down
My feet won't touch the ground

When I'm Good

Written By: Nama Kaites

If you're taking questions
I've one hundred and one
Will you address them
Before the hour's done?

Teach me something or two,
say there ain't nothin new
under the sun

I wish you could see me when I'm good
Wish you could see me when I'm right

I just want you know
Just wanted to show you
Another side

Not that lost little girl
Too cross at the world
To bother to try

Wish you could see me when I'm good
Wish you could see me when I drive
Wish you could see me when I'm starlight
Wish you could see me when I'm right

If I'm faking perfection
Then you're playing along
If you had an objection you'd ask me to move along

Hey tell me something or two
Something no one else ever knew
Sing me a song

Wish you could see me when I run
Wish you could see me in the aftermath
Out in the open, out in the sun
Wish you could see me when I'm good

I just want you know
Just wanted to show you
Another side

All the words on your mouth
The lines on your brow
The pain you don't show

And we'll watch statues fall
And we'll watch all the weeds grow tall
And we'll live through the pain of it all
Wish you could see me when I'm good

The Price of Company

Written By: Nama Kaites

It's raining out, it's New Year's Eve
I'm in LA so I can't feel it
You know how that is

There's coffee here but there's no cream
Some bourbon in the freezer
But I can't drink tonight
I can't sink tonight

A man pays me for company
He does it cuz he knows I'll stick around that way
Won't run away
So I give him love and sympathy
but he don't mean a thing to me
No, not that way and I...

I pay a man for company
I do it so that he can't leave me
He can't leave me and I need him so
But he can only see me on a Thursday
In his office 3 pm to 4

So oh look at 'em go
It really makes the world go 'round, that money thing
So take one down and pass it around uh huh
Oh just let 'em blow
Whether it's bought or stolen it's a temporary thing
So take one down and pass it around uh huh

I'm in a bar but it's not me
There's movie-stars and yoga freaks here
You know how that is

A man in here, he looks like you
The bartender, he should be you
And I should not be drinking

The price you pay for solitude
Always so misunderstood

Chorus

I'm in a bar but it's not me
I'm in LA so I can't feel
You know how that is

Secrets

Written By: Nama Kaites

God I hope I get my act straight
I want to be there when her well runs dry
I've seen this train coming for miles and miles
While I wait, appreciate the way I made you smile

I've been reading all about you
You've lead an exemplary life
I've seen this train pass me by
Pass right by me 90 miles an hour

So it's a secret
Better swallow now
Come on up but keep it down

A secret
What the gods allow
Come on up but keep it down
Come on up but quiet down
Quiet down, shut your mouth

The lump in my throat won't go away
A sinner's work is never done
I can't see it, I can't see the train
I can't see so clear now in the pouring rain

Secret
Until you let it out
Until you get it out
Until you spit it out, watch your mouth

It's getting hard to keep my face straight
Acting like there's nothing going on here
This is real and you can't keep on lying to her
This is real and you can't keep denying to yourself
