"Nana Rizinni interview"

The first time I saw Nana was on the Television program "Profissao Reporter, on Globo Channel. I found myself intrigued by her capacity of being so multiple: she goes from terrific drummer to terrific singer to musical director and sidegirl of other musical projects! I thought it was cool to see someone as determined as she is, especially in a field where we know it's not the easiest.

"No dress rehearsel, this is our life.: Nana Rizinni - Bacon Eggs EP"

Drummer and singer Naná Rizinni hails from Brazil and has topped the MTV Overdrive charts in South America for the last 6 months. Although she champions a Wannadies style of bizarre-translated-lyrics on an impressively surreal level, her style emulates Nelly Furtado with less sanity mixed with lightning strikes of energy and this lack of normality is completely to her benefit.

There's something addictive about this Brazilian rock-cum-dance starlet and her image goes to show she's not afraid of making an impact. The energy levels here are very evident in this four-track EP and the upbeat 'Bacon Eggs', 'Ardidas' and 'Danger Zone' is the music genre she should focus on. The title track of the EP, 'Bacon Eggs' bursts in with a rock-funk feel, again recalling some of of Furtado's Folklore stage lyrically, when Furtado was exploring her roots further, and then suddenly kicks in a heavier Nine Inch Nails style, similar to NIN's With Teeth moments.

'Ardidas' - meaning Burnt in Portguese or Tricks in Spanish - has a wonderful catchy guitar-motif capturing the listener and offering examples of varied languages from her palette but is still a worthy listen. Third track 'Danger Zone' isn't related to fighter jets or Tom Cruise but instead takes the popular Red Hot Chili Peppers design that switches between a melodic chorus and a heavier verse and works very effectively. Last track Busy in the Day is an acoustic affair with day-to-day events taking on a rhyme-dictionary approach flirting with domestic violence and general confusion, Naná doesn't need this intrusion on her rock/funk/pop persona.

Don't let the final track put you off from her fighting spirit though, past the strange lyrics and imagery, there is something very different here and there's nothing wrong with that. Rizinni definitely has enough attitude and passion here for something bigger worldwide, I hope she breaks out of South America because I'm positive she would master as an impressive stage presence and someone to keep an eye on and not in a worried sense, in an admirable and exciting way.

"MINI SPACE presents a new edition of the MINI ART NIGHTS project"

MINI presents the MINI Art Nights, a cultural ‘happy hour' where art, inspiration, design and creativity fortuitously collide. This event series has been running in Brazil since May and here at MINI SPACE we've got another exclusive chapter of this project for you, featuring a compilation of inventive cell phone videos used to create a music video clip. The upcoming MINI Art Nights highlights not one, but two artists: Maurício Eça, one of Brazil's most renowned video artists, and rebellious singer Naná Rizinni.

Eça is a filmmaker and undisputed Brazilian video record holder, having shot more than one hundred video clips. He started out recording his friends in a garage, eventually moving on to film the band Racionais MCs at the infamous Carandiru prison. He's also worked with acts such as Pitty, CPM 22 and Supla. He's already won the coveted Video Music Brazil (VMB) prize four times and was Brazil's representative at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

Naná is a musician from a new generation of artists enjoying increasing popularity amongst knowledgeable fans of quality music. After completing formal training as a drummer and paying her dues in a number of bands (including Belgian duo Vive la Fête), Naná chose to begin a solo career as a singer.

The filmmaker and artist hooked up with guests in a festive setting where they set out shooting the video for the single, "I Don't Care."

Check out MINI Space's interview with the two artists here:

You're a trained film maker. How was the transition from film to video clips - that is, with video clips more closely resembling the advertising medium?

Maurício Eça: Right after I finished my film studies, I began working in advertising because the Brazilian film industry was in a slump at the time. The transition to video clips was relatively natural for me, because I began directing at the time MTV was introduced in Brazil. The budgets for videos back then were very low and the demand for trained people interested in working in this new medium was high. That was the right combination: a newcomer and a new artistic language badly in need of motivated experts. Basically a video is a type of audiovisual expression, a means of putting pictures in motion. And the best thing about video clips is that they are everywhere in every medium and language: ads, films, visual arts, photography...

It's fair to call your older work that of an ‘MTV generation' director. What has changed since then?

Maurício: Everything has changed a great deal. For one, the music video is no longer in the foreground as much on TV. At the same time the internet has grown enormously as a release medium. And many more videos are being made today - above all by unknown or independent bands using the internet to raise their profile.

What is it like to shoot a video that is not restricted, that's not aiming simply to reproduce lyrics in pictures and can be more unconventional and creative?

Maurício: Lots of things have to be taken into consideration. First of all, the expectations and wishes of the artist have to be included. Then a suitable ‘picture' has to be selected and you have to go through the possibilities of how it can be created. There's no doubt that a video can be highly creative or very commercial. I prefer to work on things that appeal to the senses, things that are immediately tangible.

What does MINI mean to you?

Maurício: MINI is an attitude, an outlook always in search of something new, eager for experimentation and enthusiastic about life.

How does the MINI lifestyle reflect who you are?

Maurício: Like MINI, I appreciate quality and fun and passion for my work, as well as inspiration and breaking new ground.

Why did you choose Naná Rizinni?

Maurício: Naná Rizinni is an artist of our time. She is contemporary and she reinvents herself every day. What distinguishes Naná for me is how she weaves her soul and her innermost dreams into her work. I picked her because I see her as more than just a "professional" artist - she's an artist through and through.

You're a trained percussionist. How was it to put your drums aside and take over as a band's frontwoman?

Naná Rizinni: It was necessary. I played drums in a variety of bands and with a number of different artists for many years. I was missing something that would enable me to express myself to the fullest, so I decided to start writing lyrics. At some point I began singing my lyrics, and that's how it all got started. The challenge of standing out front is far greater than that of playing your instrument in the back, but it's also wonderful. The important thing as a front woman is to really express yourself. Sitting behind the drum kit just wasn't enough for me.

How did you come up with your ‘recipe' for "Bacon Eggs"?

Naná: I recorded an instrumental EP with my producer and friend, Rique Azevedo, and one day he suggested record - MINI COOPER

"Deixa a Nana Rizinni dançar. Com o Steve Albini"

* O time impressiona.

Do “La Na Nana”, a gente consegue ouvir a faixa “Me Deixa Dançar”, com exclusividade. É a segunda do álbum. Soa como som Paulista dos anos 80, tipo Metrô. - Poapload

Bio

At the end of 2013 Nana Rizinni left for Chicago, heading to Steve Albini’s Studio, the legendary producer of Nirvana album “In Útero” and many other records of artists such as Pixies, , The Breeders and Iggy Pop. There, in in Electrical Áudio Studio, she recorded her second album with Albini, also produced by Adriano Cintra, producer, songwriter and former member of the band CSS. The album is scheduled to release in March, this year.

For one week Nana literally lived inside the studio, which has, in addition to recording rooms, rooms that house the bands that record their albums there. She took with her a team of weight: Adriano Cintra (producer, bass, vocals, syntesizers and piano), Dudu Tsuda (pianos and synthesizers), Tiê (vocals), Pedro Rangel (drums) and André Whoong (guitars, pianos and vocals).

The result of this immersion is a blend of the Brazilian swing and the live grunge rock sounds of Steve Albini. In this sense, Nana directs her songs beyond the standards of the so called "new MPB"(New Brazilian Popular Music), walking through rock, dancing through beats and synthesizers and also singing ironic lyrics, resulting in a modern and transgressive dressing.

There are twelve tracks that complete the album, with lyrics in english and portuguese and compositions in partnership with Adriano Cintra, on the tracks "Manda Me Prender", "Prejudicada" and "Me Deixa Dançar", Tiê on "Cala Sua Big Boca" and Tim Bernardes, vocal of O Terno Band, on the song "Sujeira”.

 ABOUT NANÁ

In the first half of 2011, Nana released her debut album, "I said," produced by Plinio Profeta (Tiê, Lenine, Pedro Luis, Lucas Santtana, O Rappa and others) with ten tracks, being nine of them her own compositions. The album features the singer Tiê, IRA’s guitar player Edgard Scandurra, the journalist and writer Xico Sá and singer Karina Buhr. Earlier, in 2009, Nana had already released an EP with four songs, called "Bacon Eggs”.

The first few shows of "I said" happened in venues around New York and at the trendy festival South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. Then it was the São Paulo’s turn, where Nana released the album at Studio SP in July 2011.  Since then, she played many concerts and released four music videos: "Busy in the city", directed by Felipe Igarashi, "Triste", by Mauricio Eca, "Estupida", a beautiful animation by Marcello Laruccia and "Better than nothing" by Leandro HBL.  She  also wrote and recorded the amazing duo "Sao Brooklyn" with New York rapper Nello Luchi and released it as a single with a music video filmed in the streets of São Paulo and New York, directed by Marcello Bozzini and Dani Ruano.

Passionate about fashion, Nana owns an unique style and an anarchist and loving attitude. Her mind is always open to new references and she is always ready to join new ideas and partners. Her music mixes electronic sounds, synthesizers, acoustic drums, bass, guitars and pianos. Put together in blender a bite of hip-hop with Peaches, Madonna, Denise Stoklos, Lady Gaga, New Order, and Cibelle, shake it all and you will have a vague idea of Nana Rizinni.

Nana spent much of her childhood and adolescence in the United States, where she grew up to the sound of a lot of rock and pop from the 1980s, along with doses of jazz and the growing hip-hop culture. The Madonna figure is also described by her as a major influence as someone Who is “able to combine various artistic manifestations and reaffirm the concept of 'full' artist, integrating music, image, fashion, behavior and attitude."

Graduated in popular instrument, Nana studied drums at the renowned Drum Tech in London. She has played in bands such as Krepax, Codigo B and, more recently, ManPurse project which also featured former CSS and Bonde do Role Adriano Cintra and Marina Vello, respectively. As a sidegirl, Nana played with Thiago Pethit, Tié, Edgard Scandurra, Karina Buhr, Filipe Catto and the celebrated Belgian duo Vive La Fête, among others.
