Bio

The roots of Narco Lolo (NLL) reach back to late 2006 and the dusty floors & frigid temperatures of the Spacemart storage facility, in Hatfield, Pennsylvania. Having met during a chance introduction at their place of employment, drummer Joe Covell and vocalist/rhythm guitarist Ash Kernen (then playing with future NLL guitarist, Anthony Phillips, in the acoustic power-duo Of Ashes & Ants) immediately hit it off. It wasn't long before the two began designs on a musical partnership which would include Phillips on guitar and Covell's former band-mate in Sense of Direction (since defunct), Stephen Holliday to play bass. Teeming with creative tension and without a place to practice, the newly formed quartet came up with the novel idea to rent a storage unit to practice in. With 24 Hour access, a pension for caffeine, and an eye on conquering the musical world, the four set out on a running start from which they've never looked back.

The succeeding months would prove incredibly productive and would give birth to the witty & potent sound that Narco has since become so well known for. Born of each members versatile & varied life experiences, each member of the powerful quartet brings with them a unique perspective and taste that keeps NLL sounding and feeling fresh: vocalist Kernen brings a song-craft & vocal styling much affected by classical, pop-rock songwriting peppered with big hooks and acoustic melody yet is also heavily influenced by the wit and swing of urban soul, funk, and rhyme; Guitarist Phillips, having been inspired by the likes of Billy Corgan, John Fruscanti, and Nick Zinner, brings his signature ambient, distortion-heavy wall of sound with piercing solos to follow suit as well as an uncanny knack for introspection and sensitivity; bassist Holliday, often described as the most versatile of the bunch, is a young phenom who captures the very best of everything from funk to punk….the energy and fire that he brings to Narco’s live show is rapidly lining up to be the stuff of legend; drummer Covell, who was introduced to drumming at an early age by his father, was exposed to the best of classic rock drumming including Neil Peart, Keith Moon, and Jon Bonham. Never the one to settle for yesteryear’s best, Covell later gravitated to the furious sounds of metal and grindcore drumming to push his playing even further. The combined influence has driven Covell to master everything from the calming rhythm of a clock’s tic to the fury of a commanding blast beat. So while each member traces their individual roots to different trees, the sum of their parts is anything but disparate.

In 2007, Narco splashed onto Philadelphia’s local scene with a much-talked-about, high-energy live show, quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. Within their first year of existence, NLL has been, and continues to be, invited to play some of the tri-state's (PA,NJ,DE) finest music venues including The Trocodera Theater, The Manhattan Room, The Khyber Theatre, Bar Anticipation, Crocodile Rock, and Grape Street Pub as a 93.3 WMMR Feature Act.

As the band continues to grow and expand outward, 2008 is lining up to be another great year for Narco Lolo. NLL continues to receive great exposure in the local media, due in part to their rigorous show schedule, and has plans to hit the road for a small summer tour followed up by the recording of their debut full length LP slated for an early 2009 release.
