"Local Artist Leads Local Music Awards"

Norfolk acoustic artist Narissa Bond has garnered the top two honors in the ninth annual Portfolio Weekly Local Music Awards. Bond's "Three Words" was selected by readers as album of the year, and it's title track won song of the year.
" I feel so incredibly honored," Bond said in a phone interview. " I wouldn't have gotten the recognition had it not been for the radio play and people sharing the album."
Her music is an eclectic mix of acoustic- based jazz, folk, blues and soul. The album caught the ear of WHRV-FM (89.5) DJs Barry Graham and Paul Shugrue. Graham aired many of the songs from "Three Words" on his "Acoustic Highway" program. Shugrue's "Out of the Box" show was also supportive with air time.
"These are really important shows, because people listen to them," said Bond. "People tell me all the time, "I heard you last night on Paul Shugrue"s show."
Bond also credits a pair of in-store appearances at Birdland Records in Virginia Beach as well as word-of-mouth efforts and music festivals as important fan-based builders.
In 2000, Bond moved from Kansas City to Williamsburg at the invitation of friends attending the College of William and Mary. After spending time traveling across America, Canada and Europe, she settled in Norfolk in 2005 and spent more time performing regionally.
Bond is a 40-something singer-songwriter whose father played jazz and blues guitar. Like many recording artists in these genres, age doesn't seem to matter. It may even be an asset. ....
