"Nate Trier - nevernaut"

All the way from the cutting edge sides of Connecticut we have this cool release by Nate Trier. Not that it’s keeping ice creams frozen, but there are times that it does feel as if there are some ice cubes being shaken inside a cocktail maker.. It’s a different coolness perhaps, but it certainly does have that coolness assigned to it. This was just the sound of Havasnak, the first track on ‘nevernaut’, (which might I say is a splendid title for an album?) … but for the second track named ‘Mother’s Roses our music provider Nate Trier drops away the shade shades of cool cocktail music to provide a sentimental work that feels as devotional as a handwritten postcard to the one that had given birth to the artist so many years ago. We can hear the high sentimental values flourishing like a pretty bunch of flowers, but also the sound of Nate Trier being alive and well, giving vocal oxygen to the whole floral flow. I feel as if it’s worth a hug as it sounds so respectful and honorable…

The third tune Seng-Senggy is friendly and warm, like a tingling sensation on a Sunday afternoon. The time is passing by slowly, little light bells sparkle through the glass window and a lovely instrument with keys is being played in a relaxed corner. Nobody will be in a rush over here, everyone is just chilled out as those rays of sun spread out all over the sparkling tones of music.
A work named ‘Bound Away” keeps that sunshiny vibe, but makes it even more sparkly! Things wrinkle and rattle like cute adorable kittens on the French Riviera. An Accordion helps a great deal to lift up this French worldly music vibe, making it the ideal music to listen when you need a little cheap holiday… Bound Away will take you there and all is good; like the ideal place to place your bottom on a chair in the outside world, nibble on some olives and sip a liquid beverage of your choice! Life is good over here!

Nate Trier’s Flowers in the Valley flows out in a different way, going for a wordily song that is beautiful and pretty charismatic… Blooming away with a high sincerity like a hymn for the nature performed with a sincere love and pureness while at the same time being tormented by a kinky case of electronic glitches that is unleashed all over it. It’s adorable and weird at the same time. The release ends with a reprise version of the earlier heard Mother’s Roses which brings back the return of holy peace and inner calmness. All in all is nevernaut an impressive album of experimental ambient curiosities! - yeahiknowitsucks.wordpress.com

Discography

Palehound in a Sea of ColorThis album consists of a 6-minute piece (“Palehound”) and a 61-minute remix (“In a Sea of Color”) for piano and accordion. The two complementary pieces use an extremely constrained set of pitches to explore timbre, dissonance, and resolution in very slow motion.

nevernaut
A live performance of tape-music techniques, featuring processed voice, accordion, and live-looping (and also eating healthy snacks into a microphone). Recorded live at the Uncertainty Music Series, New Haven.

Infrared LeviathanElectronics improvisations edited and organized using mathemagics. Drawing on noise music, free improv, Baroque counterpoint, Varèse, and implemented using Goodwill cassettes, dusty boom boxes, and discount guitar fx pedals.

Only Numbers Remain - Inspired by experimental guitarist Derek Bailey’s practice of jamming with pirate “jungle” stations in the late 80’s, I wanted to advance this concept using raggacore (drum n bass’s manic offshoot) and twelve-tone instrumental music. I tried to make a face-smacking combination of academic classical music and underground club music. Featuring Barry Seroff on guitar.

Bio

Dubbed a “Rosetta Stone” by the New Haven Independent for making atonal music accessible, Nate Trier is a composer, improviser, and recording artist who creates lyrical melodies with piano and accordion that alight on churning soundscapes of buzzes, hums, and crackling static. French new-music website L’Autre Musique featured his approach to music notation as an exemplar of “new forms of writing sound and music distant from the traditional Western scoring.” The 48th International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt distributed a recording of his music to participants. Trier also curated and performed 15 one-minute graphic scores as part of New York City-based Composer’s Voice “Fifteen Minutes of Fame” series.

Trier unifies his disparate influences in jazz improvisation, classical counterpoint, and noise music into a style of music that begins with a conceptual motive and unfolds out into a complete piece. At times it may remind the listener of Erik Satie, spectralism, and ‘90’s industrial hip-hop. Ultimately, Trier’s music embodies the spirit of improvisation within a framework free of tonality and, at times, pitch.
