"U of Miami Meet Nate X 10"

Nate X 10

Bands are the Halloween costumes of college. There are too many locals to keep track of, some are too scary to mention, and you only distinctly recall the ones who managed to claim the top bar prizes. You’ve got plenty of time before October 31 to get that stellar costume in gear, so here is something nice and pretty to listen to during the thousands of hours it will take to piece together your Malibu Barbie costume, accessories and box included. They’re called Nate X 10, and since the digits have nothing to do with the number of members, you can have ten more mentions of their name instead, because you’re going to want to remember this one.
Although leading man Nate Vaill has been making music for much longer, Nate X 10, as known today, has been steadily adding members to the musical entourage since November 2005.
Coasting for awhile at five members, Nate was originally accompanied by brother, Seth Vaill, Stephen Pavkov (Guitar), Tim Finley (Drums), and Matt Kutner (Guitar/Harmonica). Hearing them play now, attention would never be drawn to the fact that the two newest members Tim Dantz (Vocals) and Phil Risko (Bass) joined the group a little over a month ago. Seth, former bass player, learned and switched to keyboard in merely a week’s time to make room for Phil’s exceptional, funky style. Tim’s singing talent formed a perfect compliment to Nate’s already strong lyrics. Now weighing in at seven members, the band’s music sharpened its edges, while still grounding itself with the same recognizable sound that knowledgeable fans would expect.
Nate’s first album entitled Love Me If You Can, recorded in 2005, is void of other current band members, but contains all the songs that the band still plays. The album established the low-key rock style that Nate X 10 still maintains today, influenced by the noteworthy style of artists like Jack Johnson. Still showcasing Nate on guitar and lead vocals, the songs still hold true to their original sound, even with the drastic change of musicians. With the extreme growth of Nate X 10, the songs have taken on a heavier feel to the formerly acoustic tracks. The title track “Love Me If You Can” and “Happy Days” make their second appearance on the album that follows Love Me If You Can, both with a more melodic feel to them.
The band’s most recent album, labeled just as an EP, offers quiet a bit more than any single you would pick up at Best Buy. Containing five full songs, one melody, and four sample tracks of soon-to-come tunes, the CD provides a good representation of what could be expected from Nate X 10 at a live show, not to mention tallying up some anticipation for the not-yet-finished tracks. Becoming more and more extinct in the music industry, it is hard to find bands that sound identical recorded and live. Although Nate X 10 doesn’t come off as a carbon copy, the changes that come with the stage performance are mostly due to the addition of new band members since the CDs’ recording. There is a strong sense of merit that comes along with a band that puts more weight on live shows than perfectly altered studio recordings.
Now, this is no Lindsay Lohan “let’s just give this whole music thing a go, because I am bored with acting” that seems to scream “do you think I actually write my own song?”. In fact, Nate X 10 performs a very limited number of cover songs. Virtually all of the band’s material is original, written by Nate himself, which may put a damper on the whole sing along scene; although, the guys will have you clapping along, whether you know the words or not.
Apparently, Nate has a cadence in his feet, comparable to Jack Johnson’s sepia tone lovin’. These aren’t exactly words heard flying out of the mouth’s of people during everyday conversation. Both of the CDs gain extreme brownie points for being lyrically smart, and most importantly, the heart and soul of their music is in no way lost in the stage translation.
“The main focus of our lyrics is to talk about the influence of our friends and families. Our music is made for and about them,” Alec Finley, band manager, said.
Their songs aren’t just wishful thinking either. Come on, you know exactly what I am talking about: Artists who are complete jerks in real life, but write over the top, mushy love songs about satin sheets and cotton candy lips. The closer you look at the guys of Nate X 10, the clearer it becomes that they radiate an extremely refreshing sense of caring and sincere appreciation for those around them. They are a group of manly guys who aren’t afraid to give each other hugs and say “I love you”—yes, it’s true; those kinds of guys really do exist in real life.
“We were talking about this the other night, and I just remember someone commenting ‘I just love love’,” Nate said.
Nate X 10 seems to have found the happy medium at the end of the keyboard. The strong lyrics run the risk of drawing the audience’s attention - Lindsey Gilbert

Bio

Coming together from vastly different musical backgrounds, each band member of Nate x10 adds their own flare to the group, creating a colorful musical ensemble that cannot be tagged to a specific genrre. Centered on the backbone of acoustic guitar, the sound builds from there with the addition of percussion, piano, banjo, harmonica, cello, mandolin, and bass. The strong instrumental basis is met by a powerful lyrical collection that seeks to personally involve the feelings of the listeners.

Nate x10's music stems from the love of those who influence their lives every day. The music they play is affected more by the people who inspire them than the music they listen to. The band aims to create a connection with the audience for a live performance that begs to be experienced, not just observed.
