A Midwinter's Eve – Nathan Clark George and Mark Stoffel

Award-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nathan Clark George has teamed up with mandolin and fiddle player Mark Stoffel for Christmas album A Midwinter's Eve.

This special album is a journey back in time taking in many of the greatest Christmas songs ever written. As Nathan himself says: "I wanted to connect the 12th century with the 20th, so we pulled from medieval times, Bach and the 1940s. Its old-world to modern folk." The result is a stunning collection of historical songs about the birth of Jesus Christ. There is also an original instrumental composed by Mark Stoffel.

A Midwinter's Eve is neither a commercial 'Jingle Bells' type of Christmas CD nor a traditional collection of carols. The album captures history, beauty and the true meaning of Christmas, all with a warm, organic tone.

Nathan Clark George, a former pastor, is a native of Murphysboro, IL. A seasoned songwriter and producer, he already has four albums to his name. His reflective, beautiful sound finds its roots in influences as diverse as James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, Shawn Colvin and many of the great classical composers. Nathan played over 80 dates in the US in 2005 – travelling with his family in a motor home - to widespread critical acclaim.

The Murphysboro American wrote: "There are shows that are considered good and there are those shows that are considered great. And then, there are those that truly should not be missed – and last Friday night, the Liberty Theatre played host to one of those shows. Anyone not at Nathan Clark George's performance totally missed out and should kick themselves", while The Nightlife hailed him as a 'guitarist extraordinaire'. Nathan was named Acoustic Artist of the Year by Indieheaven.com in March 2006.

Mark Stoffel is a virtuoso on the mandolin and fiddle and hails from Munich, Germany, though he now lives in Southern Illinois. He has been playing bluegrass and many other musical styles all over the world for over 25 years, and was a founding member of popular roots band Shady Mix. Nathan and Mark met in 2002 and have been regular collaborators since.

A Midwinter's Eve is produced and mixed by Nathan and Mark, while they are joined by Ross Sermons on upright bass and Ben George on percussion.

This heartfelt musical celebration of Christmas has its release concert on December 8 at the Liberty Theatre in Murphysboro, before the duo embark on a five-date tour of Germany in mid-December.

"A Midwinter's Eve" by Nathan Clark George and Mark Stoffel is perhaps the crowning work of Nathan. You will rejoice & be moved to praise God through this impeccably produced recording of Christmas music, with a folk and sometimes "Old World" style of instrumentation. -- Judy Rogers

"With just his voice and guitar, his simple yet sweet voice draws audiences in and wraps itself around them like a warm cardigan sweater on a windblown winter day...... A Midwinter's Eve is a reverent and loving tribute to holiday songs of the past, with a focus on the sacred aspect of the winter holiday. Haunting, stripped-down versions of such age-old Christmas hymns as "O Come O Come Emmanuel," "What Child Is This," and "Silent Night," are all performed in a folksy fashion emphasizing guitar, violin, and voice. This collection of sacred holiday favorites from the twelfth century through the 1940s will go great with a roaring fire and a cup of spiced cider as the last weeks of December draw nearer." - Jeff Hale at The Nightlife, Carbondale, IL

Mark said that the album is a mix of the familiar and the obscure. “At first we were going to do jazz standards and old hymns and as things started coming together, we just kept it with the old,” he said. The album has a warm, acoustic sound, which is typical of both Mark and Nathan. It features Nathan on acoustic guitar and vocal, Mark on mandolin and violin, Ross Sermons on upright bass and Nathan’s brother, Benjamin George, on percussion. This intimate arrangement is the perfect sound to accompany Christmas baking, a family dinner or curling up by the fireplace with a book. “A Midwinter’s Eve,” is the culmination of a musical friendship that began a few years ago, during the prepa-rations for Nathan’s last record, “Slam the Door.” - Brent Stewart at The Southern Illinoian
