Bio

Naveen was born in South India to a deeply religious Christian family steeped in Gospel music. Naveen showed a natural affinity, not to mention ability, for the flute at the tender age of three despite his having received no formal musical training. He started his musical career at eleven, accompanied by elder brother Jyothi Kumar on the tabla, spending their childhood playing for many local concerts, and the Vishakhapatnam radio. After passing out from school, his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion, and he trained in music at the School of Fine Arts, Andhra University in 1982.

Soon after, Naveen was introduced to the Tamil film industry in 1984, with his brother and father. Today, Naveen is well known for being the main flautist for Oscar-winning, world renowned Indian composer and musician A. R. Rahman, besides almost all leading composers in the country. An integral part of Bollywood’s sound, Naveen’s music is at once gentle, lush, incredibly varied and singularly captivating. Later leaving the grueling schedule of the film industry, he decided to focus on playing the flute, his true love.

Over the years, Naveen has collected a variety of rare and exotic flutes from every corner of the world—Arabia, Armenia, Scotland, Switzerland, China, South Africa, America and of course, India. No other flautist in the country plays such a wide variety of flutes. Naveen is well-known for his flute collection. He spends much of his free time exploring and inventing sounds and structures for the flute. Very familiar with the writings of Professor Sambamurthy in this regard, he has created quite a few experimental hybrids on his own. The Naveen Flute is one such invention, combining flute tone and sympathetic vibrations of strings. It will soon be made available on his online flute store.

He has also performed worldwide and collaborated with international artists such as John McLaughlin on the album, Meeting of the Mind. After the success of Fluid, his first album that was put together with the help of friends; Naveen released a sequel Café Fluid featuring fantastic musicians such as Veena player, Rajesh Vaidya and programmer, Reeg Deb. Naveen and A.R. Rahman also performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Southbank centre in London on April 7, 2010 and more recently in Hollywood Bowl with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra on July 10, 2011.
