Bio
« N’Diale » (joy)
Rooted in Brittany, Jacky Molard (violin), Yannick Jory (saxophones), Helen Labarrière (bass) and Janick Martin (accordion) are enlivened by the fusion of Breton, Irish, Balkan music along with collective improvisation. With Foune Diarra, a radiant singer from Mali, and her two high quality musicians (Kassim Sidibé playing the kamale n’goni and Alhassane Sissoko the djembé), Jacky Molard searches an internal rhythm integrating their polyrhythm.
In April 2009, everyone has to forget the oppressive heat of Bamako for the first rehearsals. When the accordion sees its keys melting and the violin becomes difficult to tune, it is still necessary to go ahead. Kassim marks the time. Helen fixes her eyes on his foot beating the tempo, she plays until she finds the accent of the Mandingo pulse. She is now able to start the pieces in the right place. Pretty quickly, the tunes from Brittany are subtly intermixing with Bambara singing and gradually, the musicians find how to make the songs waltzing, starting in uniform time.
In June, another meeting is planned in Correns, France (Var). In November a final week of rehearsals in Langonnet to capture the spirit of rural Brittany.
The ensemble shines , no longer an addition of two groups but a real septet. Earlier hesitations are forgotten, rhythms overlap, pentatonic flirts with diatonic and a new musical language takes shape.
