Bio

Multi-instrumentalist and singer from Senegal, NDIOBA doesn't just play bass with an infectuous groove. He also has a knack for melody and a beautiful voice.

Embarking on a solo career in 2005, he is part of the new generation of African artists who are building bridges between different styles and cultures.

NDIOBASS

Over the years, NDIOBA has played bass for many artists of different genres, from jazz and pop, to rock, blues, funk, hip hop and world music. As a result, he got the nickname NDIOBASS.

In the 80s, NDIOBA stayed in Paris where he studied music. After some years playing in clubs, he returned to Senegal to join TABALA BAND, led by Bara Fall. The band was eventually contracted by Youssou N'Dour to warm up his own concerts.

In 1992, after his visit to Senegal, top Finnish guitarist Hasse Walli brought NDIOBA to the North. With Hasse Walli Band, they extensively toured Europe and West Africa, produced several albums. Two songs written by NDIOBA himself got onto the Finnish and European charts.

Other collaborations in Finland have included top national artists Sakari Kukko (the father of World Fusion in the country), Aikakone, Sami Saari, Aki Sirkesalo, Irina, Tino Singh; and more recently Stilimba, Jason Carter, Zero Drama, French Kiss.

In Italy, NDIOBA has been touring with Senegalese star singer BADARA SECK in 2006 (Myriam Makeba, Mauro Pagani). In 2004, he was also part of the Gaiamama peace&musical project of Italian sax player Gugielmo Pagnozzi (Lester Bowie, Don Moye, Steve Lacy, Bob Moses, Paolo Fresu, Enrico Rava).

In 2007, NDIOBA has also been touring with national star CEMILA in Tatarstan, and is taking part in the INSTANT ACT TOUR against racism (www.interkunst.de).

NDIOBA & TOPOTO BAND

While playing bass for others, NDIOBA has embarked on a solo career as composer, arranger, bass player and lead singer of his own compositions. His songs are both in wolof and english, but you can also hear some french and finnish.

"Music is a universal language. It can help to bring people together wether they are rich or poor, black or white, young or old. It is about exploring and appreciating life within all its forms. Diversity is like spices in the food. It is why in my solo material I mix African groove, with jazz, salsa, funk, hip-hop, reggae, world music and pop. "

To always keep a positive attitude in life is very important for NDIOBA.

" I want to do my share in helping people. Musicians can often make a great deal of job, maybe more than ordinary politicians. We have many such examples in Senegal and Africa."

NDIOBA is actually recording material for his solo project, both in Finland and Senegal, while touring occasionally with his TOPOTO BAND (Klaipeda Jazz International, World Village Festival, Etnofaces, European Peoples' Festival).
