NDZ, made up of multi-instrumentalists Spider Lane and Corey Linden, started like any other band. The two had some experience, coming out of a band who appeared at several of the USA’s largest rock festivals before crashing and burning, but they wanted to do something more modern, more “feel” based, rather than simply trying to do what they thought people would like. They loved the big sound of Fall Out Boy and Green Day, and identified the UK’s McBusted and Australia’s 5 Seconds of Summer as their only like-minded peers. They thought about trying to be a pretty boy band, but that wasn’t in the cards.

Spider and Corey didn’t identify with glittery, well-dressed One Direction, and instead, took on the concept of a “boy band for the bad kids.” Big guitars and harmonies abound, but their lyrical matter touches on the darker side of growing up. Not everything is perfect, and they felt it was time for a band to really say it, to not hold back. From their first shows onward, they took on a darker look than their pop-punk contemporaries, and it was clear that a sense of the unsure, perhaps of danger, hung in the air around them as they whirled tales of the loneliness and despair that most young bands purposely avoid touching on. Of course, they still like the occasional “girl song,” but they’ve learned (often, the hard way,) that there’s a lot more behind a pretty face.
