"Nefertiti Interview on Lyrical Venus!"

When Decatur, Georgia songwriter Nefertiti wrote an email of introduction, she described her music as “Acoustic Gangsterism” and went on to explain that the style “is a mix of reggae, hip-hop, folk, rock, soul, and blues. The music comes out sounding like Kanye West and Jill Scott’s love child had a love child with Lauryn Hill and Lil’ Wayne’s love child, all grown-up.”
I was instantly intrigued! Further exploration of her links and sites quickly showed that Nefertiti is a highly passionate, soulful and creative individual who is completely true to herself. The world definitely needs more of those kind of people!
It is fascinating to find out that Nefertiti actually started out on brass instruments in school, playing trumpet at the age of 12 and being in honors bands from that first year up through her senior year. At 15 she started writing poetry. In 2005, her poetry and music worlds collided after a few guitar lessons, and Acoustic Gangsterism was born.
Between Nefertiti pounding the Open Mic pavement and being gifted a laptop in college, Acoustic Gangsterism got a chance to grow up from being a baby. Nefertiti and the nefTUNES have played all around Georgia and have lots more dates coming up this year. I have a feeling Acoustic Gangsterism is going to end up having a few babies of it’s own.
In the meantime, check out Nefertiti’s websites so you can say you knew about it way back when:

Bio:

Nefertiti Akinyela is a musician/poet/songwriter/singer/producer from Decatur, Ga. series of study lasted only a week, but a new love for poetry and writing had been opened in her and she never stopped writing poems. Although she had only played brass instruments in her band experience, Nefertiti always had an urge to play a stringed instrument (in fact, she first tried out on the double
bass, but they said her hands were too small).

After much begging and pleading with her
parents to buy her a guitar and receiving it, she let it sit in the case for a full year.
During the spring of 2006 Nefertiti met a stranger walking by strumming his guitar and singing songs. The man’s name was King David and he said that he was on his way to give a lesson. From there she began to take lessons from him every week, if not twice a week… As if by a miracle, after only a few weeks of their lessons and sessions.
Nefertiti found her singing voice while singing along with Lauryn Hill’s unplugged.
That summer, fueled by the courage and support from her friends and family,
Nefertiti started performing the second song she had ever written, “Sounds Like”, at a weekly open-mic.

While taking full use of the college atmosphere and hitting every stage that gave
her the chance, Nefertiti began to produce her own records locked in her bedroom apartment on the same laptop that was given as a pivotal and life-changing gift. With
experimentation, Nefertiti soon became nefTUNES.
The story is yet untold, so I guess we have to wait until the pages unfold…. In reality, mylife hasn’t even been lived yet. - The Fab Femme

"Unknown Celebrity PR Spotlight - Nefertiti or nefTUNES"

Neftunes is like the cherry you need to top a sundae made of, free thinking, total relaxation and creative ambiance. The flow of the music is like a soul orgasm that starts at your head and flows down to your toes until you can't help but tap your feet. Sounds like Lauryn Hill mixed with Jill Scott, Floetry, in a Tupac Bowl. Hence the name of the genre Acoustic Gangsterism. With song like "Your Truck" and "Mainframe" we are pleased to say Nefertiti or Neftunes is the breath of fresh air we have been waiting to breath!

Bio

Nefertiti Akinyela is a musician/poet/songwriter/singer/producer from Decatur, Ga. Raised in a family with African-centered values and customs, she always felt as if she stood out among schoolmates, but was able to find her place despite this. As a child, she always had a profound love for music. She used to create musical instruments out of items around the house. She enjoyed working with subjects that involved telling a story or writing, but music was her first love. At the age of 12, she began playing the trumpet in the school's orchestra. During that year she was selected to be in the district's honor band as well as it's honor chorus. She continued in the orchestra and began to experiment with other brass instruments like the baritone. In high school she joined the Southwest Dekalb Marching Band, making the district's honor band another 3 times before becoming the section leader of the trumpet section in her senior year as well as learning to play the trombone and baritone.

Nefertiti began to write poetry at 15 while studying a poetry series in school. The series of study lasted only a week, but a new love for poetry and writing had been opened up in her and she never stopped writing poetry. Because the subject matter of her poetry at the time felt so private and personal to her, she only shared the poems she wrote with close friends and family. She continued her poetry writing throughout her high school career and after enrolling in Florida A&M University. Although she had only played brass instruments in her band experience, Nefertiti always had an urge to play a stringed instrument (in fact, before the trumpet she first tried out on the double bass, but they said her hands were too small). After much begging and pleading with her parents to buy her a guitar and receiving it as a kwanzaa gift, she let it sit in the case for a full year.

During the spring of 2005, Nefertiti met a stranger walking by strumming his guitar and singing songs. The man's name was King David and he said that he was on his way to give a guitar lesson. From there, she began to take lessons from him every week, if not twice a week... As if by a miracle, after only a few weeks of their lessons together, Nefertiti found her own singing voice. With the discovery of her true voice came even more motivation to write.Starting on the Acoustic Guitar, she began penning songs with quirky titles like "Is the Blunt Rolled Yet?", "Sounds Like", "Open Your Eyez" and "Rich Friend" . Inspiration caused her to forge a new style of music that would come to be called Acoustic Gangsterism. What comes across like a blend of Rock, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Folk, Acoustic Gangsterism is very much soul music delivered via a vibrado reminiscent of Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, or Tracey Chapman.

That summer, fueled by the courage and support from her friends and family, Nefertiti started performing the second song she had ever written, "Sounds Like", at a weekly open-mic. When she returned to Tallahassee and FAMU, she began performing at venues like Amen-Ra's Bookstore and Perry's Lounge. It was Perry's Lounge where she met Glenn Jr. (producer of "Your Truck" and "Mainframe"). She performed there as an unknown, in a hip-hop crowd with a guitar. He offered to record her songs for free and she came back the next week and took the audience by storm. Through performing at Amen-Ra's she met Jadnack Defrank aka DJ Haitian Papi, former host of the Underground Railroad. JD showed a real interest in her music and approached her with the idea to remake Lupe Fiasco's "Kick, Push". They recorded a song called "Toast To The Struggle" in Nefertiti's bedroom on a laptop.

Gracing every stage that gave her and her guitar the chance, Nefertiti wanted to expand her musical repertoire. While taking full use of the college atmosphere, Nefertiti began to produce her own records on the laptop that was given to her as a gift, but became a pivotal and life-changing instrument. With experimentation, Nefertiti soon became "nefTUNES", producing songs like "What Part of da Game 49", "Might Go", "Rich Friend" and "Pages Unfold 75", all of which contributed to the her first Album, Acoustic Gangsterism, an offbeat compilation that seemed to make fun of the Hip-Hop game as it were in 2007. That summer, inspired by the whole new world of soul music she had been introduced to, nefTUNES began to delve even deeper into the world of production and composition to complete the Live Concert feel of the album that became known as F**k A Record Deal. Filled with stand-out compositions and relaxed vocal styles, Record Deal, is nefTUNES' most expressive offering to date.

After a return to her hometown of Decatur in 2008, Nefertiti began to refine recordings done in 2007, under the working title, 'Making Music', into the album that is now known as Revolution Music. With the album complete and the continued love, support, and warm reception from family, friends, and fans, she remains f
