NEFEW

American-Swiss Hip-Hop double team, NEFEW, have dropped their second studio album, Rise of the Antihero. Consisting of emcee, Polemikk, and producer, PA-Double, NEFEW set their sights on sharing with us their ideas on the vividly cultured world of Hip-Hop they’re trying to invade. The concept of ROTAH represents finding your own sense of individuality, breaking free from the shackles of monotony and disobeying life’s expectancies – it’s the rise of the anti-hero… well, at least it should be.

In a commercial sense ROTAH has everything needed to succeed – It’s solidly produced, polemikk delivers firm, well structured rhymes and applies enough dazzle with his bars to catch attention. But that’s about as far as it goes, as exploration is limited to no further than the Hip-Hop/Pop hybrid (Hip-Pop, a term I’m coining) that universally populates the charts. Unfortunately ROTAH looks set to be a “what if” album, the presence of a concept proves that creativity, technique and substance is on offer, it’s just bogged down with a style so generic, the majority of the LP falls apart at the seams. You’re left wondering what kind of impact could have been if certain risks where taken. If PA-Double focused on the creative sampling side of things a little more frequently, and less on the auto-tune friendly, trap inducing hi-hats, it’d open all kinds of vistas for Polemikk to play around in. He’s a rapper that proves he can spit, showing ability to build a switch and effuse his flow, but there are times Polemikk stumbles over a syllable, momentarily dropping things as he awkwardly tries to time his bars with the beat. But then there are times his flow will hug the beat so tight, you’ll imagine it gasping for a slight breath, struggling as asphyxiation sets in… so that being said, in some essences you could lay claim that Polemikk does have the ability to murder a beat, he just isn’t necessarily given the chance.



Littered with skits offering quasi-whimsical philosophies on the lifestyle of the western world, the tone of ROTAH is pushed to slightly confusing levels – It hints at quality ideas and sounds that ultimately slip into the formulaic cohesion that spawns a lot of the lifestyle influencers the album is trying to condemn. At its core there’s a commendably conscious approach and while it’s a somewhat aggressive attempt at advice, these skits do raise valid points. They show both NEFEW’s have their heads screwed on. However, it’s hard to find any lasting substance in these expressions when a few tracks later, during ROTAH’s 11th song, Day by Day, Polemikk boasts of his obsession with material treats before figuring it isn’t all about the Benjamins. It’s apparent that Day by Day is pitched as a reflective word of warning, a self-loathing narrative that wants to make poignant waves. Waves that are lost as the album consistently plays out like your by the numbers, billboard charted, Hip-Pop (!) release. By the albums close you’re left wondering which parts Drake and his unthreatening, massively obtuse head had involvement with – but the man Ghostface Killah once claimed, “makes a Lamb look dangerous” doesn’t show at all, instead there’s just remnants of the horrible PG-13 rapper present through spirit and sound, albeit a sound that does try a little harder to represent Hip-Hop correctly than the Canadian pop star. But let’s not get started on Drake.

Unfortunately ROTAH contradicts itself a little too much for anything to really take off. It barely carves out it’s own identity, and perhaps looks to showcase the wrong influence with its sound. There’s a large absence of variety between the beats, and the immediate spring of auto-tuned radio friendly hooks and beat schemes dampen any hopes of highlighting stand out moments, deriving it of the respect it demands. It doesn’t know what it wants to be and that’s ROTAH’s biggest problem, the term “conscious swag” (which will also be coined) comes to mind. It almost doesn’t want to go the full hog, afraid to clatter our ears with the left field, so instead stands over the road like a mental person shouting it’s opinions. It’s a self-aware anti-hero that plays it just a little too safe, dipping it’s toe in the deep end, before putting on those auto-tuned armbands. - Wordplay Mag

American-swiss Rap-Duo NEFEW consists of Da-Double and Polemikk. They recently released their sophomore album entitled “Rise of The Antihero” (ROTAH) this November (2014). The album is much like listening to a story with simple dialogues between tracks. Come to think of it, it very much reflects a rotting Gotham city, where they are the struggling hero attempting to get their people out of their rut. The theme of the dialogues relate to tough but common day-to-day struggles we all face.

ROTAH is dedicated to “People who go through life, knowing that something just isn’t right but they don’t have the courage to change it”; it’s raw, clean and real! Der Fokus liegt auf den Ort Windisch, Aargau, Schweiz. Dort produzieren zwei Musiker, Polemikk (Rapper, Produzent) und PA-Double (DJ, Produzent), englischsprachigen Rap unter dem Namen Nefew. Nefew wiederum ist ein Akronym, das für New Education From Every Word steht.

Damals im Jahre 2010 erschien der erste Teil der "Antihero"-Reihe als Mixtape. Obwohl Mixtape und so auch angepriesen, kommt es eher wie ein Album daher. Im November 2014 erschien der bisher aktuellste Teil dieser Serie mit dem Titel "Rise Of The Antihero". Geplant ist ein weiteres Release mit dem Titel "The Antihero" womit die Trilogie abgeschlossen sein wird.

Obwohl aus der Schweiz, gibt es hier - da die Wurzeln in den Vereinigten Staaten liegen - englischsprachige Texte auf die Ohren und das auch ohne Dialekt oder sprachliche Verfärbungen (meint, keine schwyzerdütschen Einflüsse / Einsprenksel).

Durch die Bank, kann man das Album eigentlich als Kritik abtun. Sei es nun gegenüber den unerträglich langweiligen Tag eines Couch-Potato, die immer wieder gleichen Ausreden bezüglich krasser Veränderungen im eigenen Leben suchen. Oder aber auch das Lehren von: "Es gibt keine Sicherheiten im Leben. Spring ins kalte Wasser und lass es egal sein, was Andere davon halten solange es dich glücklich macht."

Nachdem festgestellt wurde, dass es sich um englischsprachige Texte handelt, kann ich auch der Musik einen internationalen Charakter attestieren. Hätte ich nicht nachgesehen und hätte es nicht in der Info gestanden, könnte das Duo auch irgendwo anders leben.

Die als Anekdoten, von einem Außenstehenden, vorgetragenen Texte werden von souligen und manches mal auch jazzigen Elementen, die im Beat eingebettet sind, begleitet. Nicht immer zugänglich aber alles in allem eine ganz runde Sache. - Huffington Post

Am 28. November 2014 erscheint mit “Rise Of The Antihero” das neue Album des amerikanisch-schweizerischen Rap-Duos Nefew.

Nach diversen Veröffentlichungen freut sich die die Band nun auf ihre bisher grösste Veröffentlichung. Das Album gilt als Folgeprojekt von “Antihero Begins”, welches der Band bereits Beachtung in den USA einbrachte.

Auf dem Konzeptalbum geht es um das Überwinden von Ängsten, Zweifel und Hindernissen, die uns von anderen aufgezwungen werden. Nefews neues Album durchbricht akustische Grenzen und verzichtet auf Sicherheitsmassnahmen. Sie verlassen die Komfortzone und treten eine Reise in eine ungewisse Zukunft an. Hörerinnen und Hörer dürfen sich auf ein autobiografisches Projekt mit raffinierten Lyrics und auf den unverkennbaren Nefew-Sound freuen.

Auf dem Album „Rise Of The Antihero“ arbeiteten Nefew mit Künstlern zusammen wie: Stephan Eicher, BJ The Chicago Kid, Jared Evan, STS Gold, Jason Caesar, John Turrell und anderen. Nefew sind nicht nur die Stars auf der Bühne, sie sind auch ihre eigenen Produzenten, was sich musikalisch darin zeigt, dass ihr Stil sich wie ein roter Faden durch das ganze Album zieht. Lenny Santiago von Jay-Z’s Label Roc Nation sagte kürzlich: “Nefew bringt frischen Wind in den heutigen Hip-Hop. Songs mit Substanz, Instrumentation, super Produktionen und clevere Lyrics.” Musikalisch kann der Sound von Nefew als melodische Verschmelzung unterschiedlicher Genres mit orchestralen Elementen und mitreissenden Hooks bezeichnet werden. Na, woher kommen Nefew? Richtig, aus der Schweiz.

Zugegeben, Polemikk und PA-Double, die beiden Köpfe hinter Nefew klingen eher nach amerikanischer Ostküste als nach Schweizer Alpen. Es wird wohl an den amerikanischen Wurzeln von den beiden liegen und natürlich am früh geweckten Interesse für amerikanischen Rap. Daher auch schon vor langer Zeit die Entscheidung, englisch zu rappen, eine große Hürde dafür, dass die beiden nicht in einem englischsprachigen Land leben. Aber eine Hürde, die Polemikk, der als MC bei Nefew für die Texte zuständig ist, beeindruckend meistert.

So kam es, dass es in der 10-jährigen Bandgeschichte nun schon das ein oder andere Mixtape über den Atlantik schaffte und auch in den USA seine Runden drehte. Auch dass das Video zu „Revenge of the Dolo“ ganz offensichtlich nicht in der Schweiz gedreht wurde, passt in dieses Bild—Nefew leben zwar in der Schweiz, sehen sich aber als internationaler Act. Trotzdem hatte ihre Biographie zuletzt einen Cut: Nach dem durchaus überraschenden Erfolg vom Gratis-Mixtape Antihero Begins kam erstmal eine Weile nichts, wohl auch der Grund, warum beim Namen Nefew zwar bei dem einen oder anderen ein Glöckchen klingelt, aber wohl kaum jemand auf Anhieb weiß, von wem die Rede ist.

Und das ist längst nicht alles. Polemikk und PA-Double, die alle ihre Tracks selbst produzieren, haben dieses Jahr richtig reingehauen und werden am 28.
