Bio

Nehemie was born in Miami, FL, on one of the last days of the hottest month of summer: June 29th. She is the fourth of six children, born to Haitian immigrants who moved to the U.S. to give their children better opportunities and a better life. When she was 6-years-old, Nehemie watched as Whitney Houston sang the National Anthem at that year’s Super Bowl. It was in that moment she knew she wanted to be a professional singer.

Just two years later, at age 8, Nehemie began singing publicly with her church choir and at special events. By the time she turned 13, she had already begun writing her own songs. In high school, she focused on fostering her talent and working toward becoming one of Miami’s most well known female vocalists. By 2002, she was the Most Talented Female for Aspira of North Miami. At 18, she began singing as Soprano One for the Bethune Cookman College Chorale. She was named the Grand Prize Winner of the Bethune Cookman College Apollo Night in May 2004 and in June 2004, she was the Grand Prize Winner for the City of Kissimmee Talent Competition.

Since then, she has continued to win awards and participate in higher profile gigs. Her awards go on and on, but Nehemie still remains as driven and humble as the first day she picked up a microphone. In 2007, she was named both the Grand Prize Winner of the Elhood.com & Coco Cola Calle Ocho Rumbo Exito Singing Competition and the 4-time Apollo Winner and Finalist. She began singing the National Anthem for the Miami Heat in 2008 and continues to do so. She’s opened for recording artist Kelly Price at the 2007 Women’s Conference and was the headline performer of the 2007 Miami Calle Ocho celebration, the featured artist and opening act for Ginuwine at the 2010 Sistrunk Festival, opening act for Kindred Soul at Satoros 2010, and has been a regular Anthem vocalist for Zo’s Summer Groove since 2008. She has also opened for Betty Wright, Mario, and Fat Joe. She was named WEDR 99 Jamz’s 2009 Radiostarr Winner and won a contract with platinum producer Derrick “Bigg D” Baker, which she declined. She has since added the September 2010 Caribbean Idol Winner title for Caribbean Cruise Lines to her resume. She has had the honor of working with accomplished, platinum producers and writers Robert “Big Bert” Smith, Cainon Lamb, Robert “Est” Waller, J Angel, Jack Knight, Bert Young, The Fliptones, Derrick "Bigg D" Baker, Bridge, Kore, and The Ghostwriters.

Most recently she was a featured vocalist at Miami’s Club Bed for their “Sunday Soulcial” event, and has self-released a 6-track EP. She is currently working on her debut full-length album, which is due out in 2013, and is also putting together a short tour.

Nehemie spends most of her time songwriting, singing, recording, and demoing records for other artists and herself. Nehemie includes Brandy, James Taylor, Beyonce, Jill Scott, Chrisette Michele, Kim Burell, and Babyface amongst her strongest influences. She categorizes her music as R&B and Neo-Soul, but her music shouldn’t be pigeonholed there. Her music has a pop influence and her lyrics are as complex, thoughtful, and diverse as her influences. Nehemie doesn’t just want to become an internationally recognized recording artist, she wants to represent the diverse talent of Haitian-American artists and become a leader in introducing the world to what Miami has to offer. She sings and write every song with her heart and soul embedded in it. She is not the next Beyonce, Jill Scott, or Chrisette Michele. She is the one and only Nehemie, so don’t forget the name.
