BandFolkRock

A reminiscent boy pounding a guitar with rage, love and content backed with a layered choir of roughians

Biography

Neil Gunn's introduction began with the bedroom album Remnants of 2738, released for free on FeelsGood.ca. He has since traveled north and returned home with a dog and a backpack full of songs.
Neil Gunn's songs tell timeless stories of being young, dumb and in love. Humble versus are punched in the face with breaking screams and anthems to remind us; we’re still young, get the fuck out.

Lyrics

Arctic Anthem

Written By: Neil Gunn

I'll put twenty on the table as I've been doing for days
I haven't learned this game that well as my pay check fades away
But there's nothing in this town to do but watch it fade and so I'll play
I've been up here for months and my debt is growing thin
I've done what I've come to do should I pack my bags again
But everyone here is just like me we want to watch this sun just spin around this town

But the north isn't for the weak of heart
You've got to sleep in the light
You've got to live in the dark
Everyone who comes finds what they''re looking for
Some quiet seclusion
A whole world apart

It hardly ever snows here cause the temperatures too cold
Yet zero back home is worse then forty here below
It's the wind that will get you make you catch your death of cold down to your soul
I've been standing on this piece of ice they cleared into a road
I've been standing here for two straight hours compared to minutes I was told
Just to watch a team of dogs pull a man for the gold
This feels like home

But the north isn't for the weak of heart
You've got to sleep in the light
You've got to live in the dark
But everyone who comes finds what they''re looking for
Some quiet seclusion
A whole world apart

As soon as may hit you know the ice road fell apart
The intensified seclusion did not lead to broken hearts
The mud never looked so good coming down the slopes it poured
If I could build a raft I would steal deeper into the north

But the north isn't for the weak of heart
You've got to sleep in the light
You've got to live in the dark
But everyone who comes finds what they''re looking for
Some quiet seclusion
A whole world apart

One More, Barkeep

Written By: Neil Gunn

One more, Barkeep

I should of known better
Then to pour another drink
My visions already faded
And the rage is growing quick
To think another man
Might be sitting where I sat
Only days before well fuck
I'll drink to that

But I only want whats best for you
I only want you to be happy
If it's him that does it for you
I'll try and let that be
But I think I'm going to kill him
Kill him
Kill him
Kill him

So I drank myself into a pit of dispair
I was the only man sitting on those bar room chairs
Talking to the tender over the shit I was in
And something in his words I found comfort in

He said I know you're trying to be the bigger man
I know you want her to be happy
And I can see you're doing your best to try and let that be
But if was you I would kill him
Kill him
Kill him
Kill him

I tossed my cigarette before I kicked in the door
Where I found you laying on that living room floor
I couldn't stop my foot as it found a home in his ribs
And when you said you called the cops I swore
You're worth it kid

Cause I only want whats best for you
I only want you to be happy
And I've been doing my best to try and let that be
But if the cops don't get here soon I swear I'm going to kill him
Kill him
Kill him
Kill him

1-2-3-4 I smell a civil war!

Written By: Neil Gunn

I had a dream the other night
Where the children play
The soilders fight
Armed with what we found at home
A civil war had broken storm
The cencorship had buckled down
Raise your voices up
Lower your bodies to the ground
More prisons built then homes were kept
When the countries busy whos watching the government

Now we're left to fight alone
Each man for his beliefs alone
Destroy the sin
Resurect the good
But when the morning sun did rise
It was only the killers that stood

We never saw it coming out way
The economy slipt
The wars were never put at bay
Till one day it all changed
And they were knocking at our doors
Will you help us bare arms
Or will you kneels upon the floor
I held my hachet to my side
I'm a peacful man but I'm willing to die
Don't bring me lord or law
The ones I have work fine
Yes we all have our beliefes
Are you ready to die for mine

Now we're left to fight alone
Each man with his beliefs alone
Destroy the sin
Resurect the good
But when the morning sun did rise
It was only the killers that stood

By the end of the dream I had slipt away
Killed my path through the city and then let the city fade
And I built myself a home
Hidden in a cove
And I waited out my days to see if my beliefs would unfold

Now we're left to die alone
Each man with his beliefs alone
Destroy the sin
Resurect the good
But when the morning sun did rise
It was only our pride that stood

Nova Scotia, I'm Coming Home

Written By: Neil Gunn

I packed my bags I'm ready to go
I've got two more dogs and guitars then I brought here
And if the customs agents ask what do you think you're carrying there
I'll just explain that these are just my souveiners

I packed my bags I'm ready to go
I sure have cluttered up my load
In this rats nest of a backpack that I never thought I'd carry
Now that my feet are at the pavement this road is looking rather warry

I packed my bags I'm ready to go
I've thrown away all my worthless clothes
That I'd gathered from what others had thrown away
One less t-shirt bought is one more meal for a day

I packed my bags I'm ready to go
I just finished setteling all my good bye notes
I'm not that great at goodbye cause I'm even worse at keeping in touch
If you're expecting letters or postcards I wouldn't expect very much

I unpacked my bags I'm ready to go
I just finished setteling back into home
I'm already dying to be free I need to scratch that travellers itch
But for now I'll just make money at this lousy job and bitch
At how the world is so much better anywhere but here
But when I'm anywhere but here I'll only want to be
Right at home
Right here ee ee ere in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia I'm coming home
I need to let go of my load
Nova Scotia I'm coming home
Can't wait to taste that salty coast
Nova Scotia I'm coming home
I can't say for how long
But I'm home

The Mad Trapper Of Rat River

Written By: Neil Gunn

When I was up north a story I was told
From bits and pieces this is how it goes
That the only bar in town stole it's name from his ghost
Well he's the Mad Trapper of Rat River

He built his cabin on the riverside
No man heard a word for all they knew he died
Till a couple busted traps brought some sherrifs to his hide
Well he's the Mad Trapper of Rat River

They only wanted words what they got was a response
That sounded off the forest with a single shot
Leaving the very man who met it frozen fist with a knock
Well he's the Mad Trapper of Rat River

For seven more hours crouched deep in the snow
They were shot at by a man some where they didn't even know
For every bullet they tried he had ten more to throw
Well he's the Mad Trapper of Rat River

They returned the next day with dynamite in hand
They blew his cabin from that river bank sand
Little did they know he snuck out a back hole
Well he's the Mad Trapper of Rat River

They continued by land they continued through terrain
And only found him once they brought a plane
He walked along in caribou tracks far to deep to be seen
Well he's the Mad Trapper of Rat River

When they finaly caught him it was with a bullet in his back
But not before he gave them one last crack
Straight through the heart no sherrif to bring back
Well he's the Mad Trapper of Rat River

Well that was the story I was told when I was north
But with so many versions who knows what this one is worth
Some men say that they faked his death that he escaped into this world
Well he's the Mad Trapper of Rat River

It's Cold Out There

Written By: Neil Gunn

It's Cold Out There
I'm sitting here in Whitehorse
On my way to make my fortune
A snow storm brought the plane down
We're just waiting for the sky to open
And a man behind the bar offers me a drink
Says' "You gotta' stay warm some how boy,
So what'a ya think?"
I say "It's cold out there but I'm not scared"
Cause I know you're at home thinking about me

I pull my bags from the cargo belt
And walk towards town
You were right about this old coat
It's not fit for the weather I have found
And a girl in a truck offers me a ride
Says' "With that old coat, boy
You won't survive"
I say "It's cold out there but I'm not scared"
Cause I know you're at home thinking about me

Wel my debts been cleared
And my bills been paid
There's a lump sum in my pocket
I've boarded on this old plane
But I'm not sure if the old besides got it
Cold air cuts through terrified faces in the cabin
The turbulence makes us think of all that could happen
I say "It's cold out there but I'm not scared"
Cause I know you're at home thinking about me
Cause I'm here thinking about you too
