"Nekia Parchell - This Day"

Reviewed by Allan Clare

Ignore the perfunctory packaging. This is a very good album indeed from a fine New York-based vocalist. It's not hard to see why Nekia is receiving interest in the crowded gospel field. What we have here are nine radio-friendly, urban gospel gems. David Garcia has done a brilliant job as producer, and there's not a track here which would sound out of place on mainstream radio. Perhaps the ballads are a little too similar in sound to 1980s Whitney Houston, but overall, whether it's the pure pop of "True Livin'" or the more hip-hop beat of "Everywhere I Go" (with Nekia sounding like Beyonce on one of her spiritual days) these are catchy melodies with superb contemporary production. Well worth investing in for any fan of urban gospel/R&B. You won't be disappointed. - Cross Rhythms.com

Bio

Nekia Parchell is a contemporary gospel singer and songwriter whose unique style and voice allowed her to minister in music. From Israel to Memphis, Honolulu to Atlanta, Nekia Parchell has sung on stages and pulpits. This Milwaukee native has sang with various ministries throughout the years including Joseph Jennings and Dorothy Travis. Her creative arts education helped foster her talent as she participated in several plays, musicals and talent shows. Trained in classical music she also studied jazz at the Manhattan School of Music. At the age of 16 she began professionally recording and performing and her first CD released titled "Wilnekia" was released the following year. Using the proceeds to fund her college education, this current high school administrator has returned full circle to professional music. Nekia Parchell's latest release titled "This Day" hopes to inspire and encourage. Titles include "Right Where You Are", a song written after sharing the Gospel to a co-worker, "This Day" an inspiring morning wake up or on your way to work tune and "Everywhere I go", a toe tapping up tempo groove all produced by David Garcia. Nekia Parchell plans to record more songs, "God is blessing me with several songs. I'm a firm believer that music is meant to be shared, so I can't wait to get out what God has given me," says Parchell. Currently, she is a finalist in the Gospel Music Association Academy's Artist of 2007 competition.
