"Renowned Belizean artist, Nello Player, wins Nat’l Patriotic Song Competition"

Renowned Belizean artist, Nello Player, wins Nat’l Patriotic Song Competition
Kernelle Parks, whose stage name is “Nello Player,” is a popular Belizean singer/songwriter who has been on the music scene since he recorded his first song back in 2005. Since then, he has gained utmost respect and has produced several reggae/dancehall albums, such as Collective Insight, Best of Nello Player and others.

The prolific artist has also won the National Patriotic Song Competition for the second year in a row. He told Amandala that it’s a truly wonderful feeling for him to have won again, particularly since this is the fourth year that he has performed in the contest. At first, he said, he wanted to sit out the competition, but then he found out about the grand prize being offered by NICH – a trip to an international festival. He said, “The opportunity caused me to change my mind, so I decided that I couldn’t sit out this year; then winning the Patriotic Song Competition again was an even greater feeling.”

Nello Player told us that he did not have any idea that he was going to win, going into the competition, but he was very hopeful. Still, the artist said, he did his best and “put out a good song with the help of Ms. Edwina Logan of ‘The Remaining Band’, and the people spoke and I won for the second time.”

He explained that it is hard work for him to be able to consistently produce quality music, but said, “I’m committed to what I do, and I do my best to fulfill my obligations. I know what I want to do and how far I want to go in music. I want to leave a mark in music that Belize can be proud of, so that the country could be identified as somewhere that is able to produce good music and good artists. That’s my goal, to put Belize on the map.”

Nello Player says that he is known for creating music with lyrics that are intended to soothe the soul and touch the hearts of listeners who probe the thoughtful content of his songs. - Amandala(Belize's leading newspaper) writer Karim Clarke

"An Audio Production Summer Camp for the Musically Inclined"

An Audio Production Summer Camp for the Musically Inclined

NELLO PLAYER
A six-week audio tune program for budding artists and musicians will commence next week Monday at the Department of Youth Services on Regent Street. The program is primarily targeting persons between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five that have that interest in tapping into the local music industry. The idea is to offer a concentrated course on how to create a song from start to finish—from songwriting to beat creation, recording and putting out a final product.

Nello Player, Artist Program Organizer
“How this came about is that I find myself often mentoring, if you will, or assisting young musicians and artists and even go as far as recording them and recording music for them and I thought that it would be good to have a platform to teach a number of them, who have the interests and, as you’ve said, don’t have the resources to do so. And the Youth Department has created a new space for musicians, a studio area and that is where the program is going to take place and it’s from nine o’clock to twelve o’clock from Monday to Thursday. It’s a very hands-on, interactive program where every week I will be inviting a guest instructor to assist and to liven up things and to give another perspective other than what I know.”

Duane Moody
“How does this add to you as an artist, taking the knowledge that you’ve garnered over your years of performing and all of that and imparting that knowledge to them? How does it help with you and where you see Nello Player as an artist, as a producer, as a songwriter and all of that?”

Nello Player
“Well maybe this is a glimpse or a sneak peek into what’s to come in the future, but it is fulfilling, it is gratifying that I can pass on the little that I know to somebody in a basic manner that is very comprehensive and they could understand everything. That they can touch, the computer and touch the keyboard and say, see this is what happens when you do that. So I feel good passing this one because I wasn’t formally taught this so it is the same thing I am passing on.”

The program goes for six weeks starting on Monday. To register, you can contact Shawn Saldano at the Department of Youth Services or you can call 651-1411 for more info. The first fifteen will be accepted into the program. - Channel 5 Belize (Duane Moody)

"Verge of Umbra: When Heavy Metal cheats on Hip Hop with Reggae!"

The day I heard ‘The Meditation’ by Verge of Umbra started out like any other work day. It was a blip on my newsfeed well before my first cup of coffee, so I didn’t get to listen to it till late into the day. I should have pressed play immediately. Who needs caffeine when you have this tune to get your adrenaline revved up?!

Allow me to preface this entire story with the fact that I am a metal enthusiast – as in, I love rock/metal and it is my go-to genre of choice – but, I am not an expert. I appreciate a good combination of drums (the drums man!) and guitar and pounding bass – it all blends into a backdrop that sometimes far surpasses the quality of lyrics even – but lyrics matter too! With the exception of, oh, I don’t know, country (?)…I listen to pretty much anything. But my first foray into music came with Guns N Roses, Nirvana and Metallica. I would say that two out of the three really cemented my love for rock. Not exactly the typical Belizean musical experience – believe me, I know!

I mean, we’re talking about a musical genre that is not considered a part of Belizean culture. I think we’re mostly known for the Punta, Brukdong, contemporary Garifuna, soca and some Spanish mezclados. Heavy metal isn’t exactly our driving cultural force – but you’d be surprised to know that a lot of Belizeans are fans of rock. And Verge of Umbra is a band that encompasses solid guitar riffs, pounding drum beats and excellent lyrics in a style that is, well, Belizean. - Mybeautifulbelize.com

Biography: Nello Player

Hailing from the tropical paradise of Belize, recording artist, Nello Player, born Kernelle Nykonie Parks has developed into a respected vocal and musical talent.  When Nello is not performing, he spends a great deal of his time writing and recording music.

His interest in music goes all the way to the tender age of ten.  At that time, Nello was highly influenced by both parents who are avid music lovers.  Nello  nurtured his own unique style, finding musical inspiration in the music of his time.  The then  sound systems of Jamaica such as Stone Love movements, David Rodigan, Killamanjaro (Ricky Trooper), King Addis (Tony Matterhorn and Baby Face), Bass Odyssey and Jamrock, to name a few, were major influences in Nello Player’s idea of what he wanted for his own music.  Legendary reggae artists such as Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, Bitty Mclean, Alpha Blondy, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Tenor Saw, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, & Black Uhuru, all served as pillars in his musical preference and contributed positively to Nello’s musical make up.   While other artists such as Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, Junior Demus, Mad Cobra, Ninja Man, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, and Buju Banton has highly influenced his musical style, especially when touching base with his “rude boy” persona.  “Whenever I start writing a song and thinking about music, I think about making music like Bob Marley…songs that will live on and stand the test of time.  I always think about his positive message in the music and still not overshadowing my at times rude boy side and persona.”

Nello recorded his first song 2005 at Heights of Vibe studio entitled ‘Dream’,a collaboration with Jah Thunda, a reggae artist of David House, home of Reggae dancehall veteran Capleton, in Jamaica.  Since then, Nello Player’s music has been playing on radio stations throughout Belize.  “I love the idea of music being an avenue of expression…a worldwide acceptance no matter race, color or creed.” I believe that “music if used the right way can be a method of spreading a positive and universal message. That is my primary goal”.

His latest effort (Brain Food,) shows his true talent as a songwriter and producer.   Over the years, Nello has spun a wheel of new productions and hit tunes that have further lead to new and ear catching sounds, such as, ‘The Love of The Father’, and ‘Team Up,’ & ‘Lately’ to name a few.  Nello has performed at shows throughout Belize, New York Park fest in 2008,  Evanston, Chicago to the Belizean Public, Flores Peten, Guatemala, Guatemala City, Chetumal, Quintanaroo, Mexico and most recently South Florida at The One Caribbean Festival and continues to distribute his music to the radio stations throughout Belize and abroad.  Nello Player’s hard work in music has gained him the honor of receiving the coveted award of Belize’s top male vocalist at the Belize music Awards for the years, 2010 and 2011; as well as Reggae artist of the year for 2011 as well as Best Dancehall artist.  Apart from these Belize Music awards, Nello has captured the National song competition first place honors for 2012, 2013 and 2014 consecutively.  What an achievement. December 13th, 2014, Nello Performed at The First Annual One Caribbean Festival In Florida, which featured the likes of Maxi Priest, Sean Paul and Marcia Griffiths. Presently Nello Player is working on an Album that promises to change the shape of Belizean Urban music..

He continues to develop beats and writes music that targets social consciousness and touches the hearts of listeners.  Nello Player knows what he wants from his music and is determined to achieve his dreams and aspirations.
