Nesi, an 18-year-old rapper from Cranston, Rhode Island, is featured on this month's Sounds of Berklee. Her song, "Shake Up," made her a grand prize winner in Berklee and Essence magazine's Hip-Hop Songwriting Contest. The contest winners were selected by a panel that included hip-hop celebrity judges Yo-Yo, Pete Rock, and Roxanne Shante. - Berklee

It all started in the summer of 2008, when Nesi won grand prize in the Essence Hip-Hop Songwriting contest held by Berklee College of Music, winning the chance to learn about the music industry there, all expenses paid, during a 5-week summer program. Her song, “Shake Up”, was selected by a panel of hip-hop celebrity judges- Yo-Yo, Pete Rock, and Roxanne Shante- and a handful of Berklee scholars. In 2010, Nesi was placed on the Official Ballot for the Grammy Awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in the following categories: Record of the Year (True 2 Me), Song of the Year (Shake Up), Best New Artist, Best Rap Solo Performance (True 2 Me), and Best Rap Song (Shake Up). Fast-forward two and a half years, and she has performed in several Berklee shows as a featured artist, and appeared on Bravo TVs “The Kandi Factory” which follows former member of the platinum-selling music group Xscape and Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss as she helps 16 aspiring artists jumpstart their dreams of success in the music industry." Nesi won episode 7, and her winning single "Shut It Down" is available on iTunes + my music video is available on youtube and bravotv.com. Her style ranges from mainstream hip-hop and pop to r&b/ rock. She is a standout artist not only for her unique voice, but for her sense of humor which comes out in her writing.
