"A-SIDES WITH JON CHATTMAN"

Our second rocking act on A-Sides this week are New Cassettes. Before I tell you about them, I just want to say I miss making mix tapes. I miss waiting on the radio to record a song off of it, too. Everything is so damn immediate now. I miss the pre-Spotify days and iTunes nights. Anyway, I'll stop and get back to the band.

New Cassettes is a five-piece band from Northampton, England and they've been getting a lot of traction in recent months. Well, I say that but the truth is it's been a few years. They've opened for The Strokes, played the Glastonbury Music Festival, and are currently opening for Apollo Run in support of their album Winterhead. That album, by the way, was mixed by Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne. While on tour, the band performed "I'm Not Faithful" and talked about it from their hotel room. It was recorded live, but you get to watch it taped! Boom. - Huffington Post - ENTERTAINMENT

"NEW CASSETTES CHARGE WINTERHEAD"

The New Cassettes are a British pop band that have just enough post punk edge, indie dance grooves, and power pop punch to make their album Winterhead stand out like a sore thumb. Winterhead is an energetic record that pogos all over the place, jumps into walls, brings down the roof and then gets back up and does it all over again. Energetic to the point of needing medical attention to slow down, The New Cassettes perpetuate their vintage feel and retro-tastic name into something thoroughly modern and propulsive. This is an impressive unit that has tapped into the fine art of brilliant British pop.

Spiky, speedy, and stupendously catchy listening to Winterhead is like listening to Bloc Party, bits of blur, and maybe even the Futureheads all at the same time in complete harmony. Jagged guitars slice and dice riffs at a lightning quick pace while hooks, melodies, and lyrics are miraculously placed over it all with precision. This is a record that's not for the faint of heart or anyone seeking something mellow. The New Cassettes clearly do not have time to waste on being lackadaisical...they have twelve songs to get through and no time to do it in. Thankfully, they manage to do it all with a strong pop sensibility and great songs in tow.

The New Cassettes are a fantastic band and the fact that they are able to play with such potency and vigor while still maintaining a sense of urgency and what makes a strong pop song is impressive. Winterhead is nearly perfect; it's memorable, energetic, and well written and one of my favorite records thus far this year. British pop is alive and well and it's got enough energy to last a lifetime. Nice work guys.

"Suburban Apologist - New Cassettes - Silent Guns EP"

There are plenty of reasons to arrive early to shows, and while Tampa does have a reputation for kicking things off in a less than punctual manner, we highly recommend getting to Crowbar on time on April 2. We Were Promised Jetpacks will be headlining, but opening the bill will be New Cassettes who hail all the way from Northampton in the United Kingdom.
Their bio pegs them as “five people with no idea,” but a few listens to their Silent Guns EP reveals a band not lost, but in possession of some catchy ass modern rock tunes. The EP is about a year old, but New Cassettes will be releasing a full length – Winterhead – the day after they blow through Tampa. Have a listen to the EP below. More information on the show is available at our calendar page.

"Music Review: New Cassettes at the Roadmender"

Ahead of jetting off for two months to the USA for a handful of shows at South By Southwest and supporting We Were Promised Jetpacks, New Cassettes returned to the Roadmender on Friday night.

With new drummer in Ed Hoare in tow, Northampton’s finest purveyors or hook laden indie pop with killer choruses were joined by The All New Adventures Of Us and An Army Of Lights.

The back room of Roadmender is a fantastic alternative to the venue’s spacious main room.

With low ceilings and sweltering temperatures, it’s everything a great indie venue should be.

Last week, Rams’ Pocket Radio proved even with a sparse crowd, it’s possible to put on a great show.

However, on Friday, it was packed to busting point.

Familiar faces associated with the Northampton music scene were dotted around the venue, including former Cassettes’ drummer on hand to show his support.

TANAOU and An Army Of Lights both raced through great sets, proving Northampton’s alternative scene is still alive and kicking.

New Cassettes’ new album, Winterhead, is due out next month, the follow up to their 2009 debut The Art Of . . .

Much of their set is given over to new material, with a few fan favourites from their debut thrown in for good measure.

Anyone who’s seen New Cassettes before will know the score – a front man throwing angular shapes around the mic stand, a suavely dressed bassist and two guitarists belting out hook after hook while throwing in a few rock poses along the way (drummer Ed will remain an unfamiliar quantity for time being!). Among the new material, Straight Lines stands out, hopefully indicating Winterhead will give the band the break in the UK they need . . . given their popularity across the pond. New Cassettes finished with a couple of old favourites from their debut before disappearing into the Northampton crowd ahead of their American adventure.

"Babysue Music Review- "Top Pick" CD review of Winterhead"

Winterhead (CD, N13 Music, Pop)
The guys in New Cassettes are on a sure and quick path to success. The band's rhythm-driven modern guitar-based pop is instantly infectious and slightly familiar...but there's an added punch to the music that is missing in many twenty-first century bands. The group is comprised of Dan Battison (bass), Nik Gray (guitar, vocals), Tom Stubbs (vocals), Tommy Francis (drums, vocals), and Owen Reed (guitar, vocals). Winterhead features hyperactive pop tracks that have a nice thick juicy sound that incorporates danceable beats, heavenly bass lines, smart guitars, and vocals that always hit the target. The songs tread on that fine line that separates commercial pop and art. That is to say...the songs are familiar and accessible but there's still plenty of creativity swimming around in the mix. On the first spin we liked this album. By the fourth of fifth spin we found ourselves falling in love with many of these tracks. Our favorite cuts include "Left/Right," "Little Extremes," "Straight Lines," and "I Awoke." Great pure pop stuff. TOP PICK. - Babysue

"Jimmy Eat World - Hear This: New Cassettes"

Some bands remind you of certain places even though they may not originate from that specific location. While New Cassettes hail from Northampton, England, their sound brings images of palm trees, sandy beaches, and the streets of Los Angeles to mind. This five-piece band originally formed as a mish-mash side project in 2005 while each member pulled double-duty in bands of their own. Gradually, the side project solidified into a fully-fledged endeavor and the band’s notoriety has been on a similar gradual incline ever since.
The basslines are bold and groovy, the guitars are sunny and infectious, and Tom Stubbs’ vocals are deliberate with an edgy twist. New Cassettes is an edgy pop band that you will want to unapologetically blast out of your car windows while speeding down the Pacific Coast Highway. Fans of Jimmy Eat World will definitely find New Cassettes equally appealing and blast-worthy. The guys recently released Silent Guns, a seven song EP, on November 8, 2011 which you can stream below: - The Owl Mag.com

"Daily Unsigned - New Music served fresh daily"

I have a box of old cassettes sitting in my closet. I have some cassette singles and stuff in there. I think I have a couple of Polaroid’s and a beta tape mixed in there for good measure. If somebody under the age of 18 opened my closet and discovered that box it would be the modern day equivalent to the discovery of Tutankhamen’s Treasure for some unsuspecting young nitwit. Being the Sultan of Segue that I am this leads me to my discovery of New Cassettes, my latest musical unearthing. They are a five piece edgy Pop/Rock ensemble that has everything in order; great agents and publicists yet no deal. They are by no means an up and coming band, they are established but we feature all good unsigned music not just the obscure. Musically they remind me of Bloc Party with a more mainstream vocal. I am now accepting bids on that box in my closet. I will open the bid at $100 and will even sweeten the pot with a copy of the New Cassettes….that alone is worth it, consider it your new music discovery box, it contains gems from the 80’s and now one gem from 2011, New Cassettes.

"YOUNGANDPRETTYBLOG.COM Hype Music Launch Party"

YOUNGANDPRETTYBLOG.COM ATTENDS HYPE MUSIC LAUNCH
POSTED ON JUNE 23, 2011 BY HYPE MUSIC
Reported by: Emma Santangelo

This past week, the LA Y&P’ers ventured out to the Hype Music Launch in Santa Monica to hear some rad new music, eat some awesome street meat and soak in the best vibes that the LA music scene has to offer. We were warmly welcomed by the lovely Brad Bilger of Guilty Dog Management who pointed us in the direction of an über-delicious taco truck and pumped us up for the killer show he had in store for us.

As soon as we walked into The Village, we knew we were in the presence of great music, past and present. As we trolled the hallways and dropped our jaws at the amazing collection of iconic records covering the walls, it was reminiscent of William Miller’s first backstage band encounter at the Stillwater show in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. It was that good.

The impressive records we saw were good indicators of the level of rockin’ talent we were about to witness during the show – it was definitely worth the hype.

And speaking of…Hype Music is the lovechild of MTV Networks and Extreme Music, who have come together to create a rad new music family of super talented emerging artists. We had the pleasure of witnessing the musical on-stage magic of Hype bands The Diamond Light, New Cassettes, Wallpaper., and Locksley; all of whom were rock-out-worthy and totally amazing. To put it simply, the show was fire.

As if the night could get any better, we had the treat of getting a “behind-the-scenes” post-show tour of the venue. We were more wowed than ever when we were led into the studio where the Stones recorded one of their most-worshipped and wonderful songs, Angie. It was a collective “Holy Shit” moment for sure.

Be on the lookout for these new artists – they will definitely be making major waves in the music world in the very near future. Tracks from the featured artists are all available for purchase on iTunes – be sure to buy ‘em in the name of supporting hard-working, driven and super-talented new artists!

"Live Review: NEW CASSETTES AT LONDON'S BARFLY"

Published on Friday 15 April 2011 06:31

NEW Cassettes have been on what feels like a world tour in recent years, (well, mainly an appearance at South By South West in Austin Texas last month and a handful of shows in Japan in 2009)

However, the band returned to their home shores to take to the stage of the Camden Barfly in London on Saturday night.

Supporting Endeavours, Northampton’s New Cassettes succeeded in filling the venue with more fans for their set than for the main act.

Arriving on stage, they launched straight into material from their newly-released EP Silent Guns.

The EP sees the indie-five-piece take a slightly heavier direction from their ultra-perky debut The Art Of...which was released in 2009.

Frontman Tom Stubbs has lost none of his stage presence and manic energy as he flung himself from side-to-side of the Barfly, twisting around his microphone.

They finished the set with old favourites including Hearts Don’t Beat Right, which set the room singing and dancing, before slinking off stage and no doubt back to some exotic land in their quest for world domination - one backroom venue at a time.

Endeavours come on to face a somewhat emptier room but throw so much energy into their set of cheerful indie that the lead singer literally shakes the sweat from his hair and sprays the exuberant dancers at the front.

They win over the room with a mix of thoughtful lyrics and easy to dance and sing to rhythms and finish the set with the whole room clapping - a shame really, that there were fewer people in room to enjoy them.

New Cassettes worked on their new album, Winterhead, with Grammy winning song writer and producer Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne.

It is due to be released later this year.

"NEW CASSETTES MIX IT UP WITH ADAM SCHLESINGER"

VISIT ascap.com for a playback field recording video feature of the New Cassettes
Northampton, England-based band New Cassettes recently spent a week at Stratosphere Sound Studios in New York City to mix their new album with Grammy Award-winning (and Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-nominated) song- writer/composer/producer Adam Schlesinger. The members of New Cassettes, a UK buzz band who combine smart lyrics with elements of new wave, punk and classic rock and who have been described as “one of the country’s most exciting new bands” by the BBC’s Channel 4, were fans of Schlesinger’s masterful work with his own pop bands - Fountains of Wayne, Tinted Windows and Ivy - and were thrilled to work with him in his renowned studio. The band’s manager Andrew Morris, an Englishman based in the U.S., was determined to marry the band’s British rock
sounds with Schlesinger’s American pop sensibili- ties. The results of the inspired pairing will soon be unveiled.
After finishing the mixes for the album, the band flew to Los Angeles and performed for a select group of music supervisors at a special ASCAP showcase hosted by ASCAP’s Film & TV Music Department and held at the Beverly Hills Gibson Showroom on November 4th. Pictured below are New Cassettes performing at Gibson in LA (l-r): Nick Gray, Tommy Francis (on drums), Tom Stubbs, Dan Battison and Owen Reed; and (above) in Stratosphere Sound Studios (l-r) are Schlesinger, Stubbs and Battison (standing) and Stratosphere chief engineer Geoff Sanoff (seat- ed).Visit ascap.com for a Playback Field Recording video feature of the New Cassettes. - PLAYBACK MAGAZINE ASCAP 2010

"The Truth About Music - SXSW 2011"

New Cassettes Prepare For American Domination On Heels Of SXSW
By Harris posted March 29, 2011 at 08:00

New Cassettes at SXSW
One of the greatest parts about SXSW is discovering new music. Music that you had never heard from various countries or brand new acts from your own backyard. In diving into the thousands of bands listed on the various websites for SXSW, we came across a band called New Cassettes. Formed in 2005, the band describes their careers together as a “roller coaster.” With periods of moderate success overseas, the band is ready to bring their talents ashore in America.
Similar to how many bands launch their careers, New Cassettes have had a bit of help along the way. In looking for local support for a show in the UK, The Strokes liked the bands sound enough to let them lead off after forming just a few months earlier. With varied tastes in music through the band, drummer Tommy Francis mentioned that they “all had a passion for a cheesy pop song,” something that we can certainly relate to. It’s great to see a band that knows where they fit in. Without trying to sound cliche, they embrace their role as an up and coming pop band instead of looking to reinvent the wheel.
As New Cassettes continue their journey into American households, MTV looks to play a large role in their success. Searching for licensing opportunities in film or television, they were approached by MTV and were asked to join MTV Hype, a new platform for emerging artists. “It gives MTV the opportunity to work with bands that they like and hopefully bands that will stick around a little bit” said lead singer Tom Stubbs. That last sentiment is something the whole bands seems wary of. With so many one and done artists in the pop world, they hope that a slower buildup with help from MTV can help forward them to new highest.
With their new partners, New Cassettes were given the opportunity to play the MTV Garage, performing just ahead of headliners Matt & Kim. Circling back around, the bands sound is what truly made them stand out to us. A perfect mix between a raw and polished sound, New Cassettes capture the same emotion on their record as they do during a very energetic set at the garage. While they don’t believe they will receive any preferential treatment in getting their pop friendly anthems placed in MTV shows, one can only imagine it will be the next step. Breaking in America seems like an immediate goal for the group of guys who feel that people in the states want to champion smaller bands, getting behind them at an early stage. “In England, to sell enough to be a band, you really got to be big there, where as here people just walk into a bar and watch a band” said Stubbs.
Francis said it best in summing up the band. “It’s pop, let’s enjoy ourselves…it was a breath of fresh air really to be able to play stuff that you really wanted to but new that you shouldn’t.” While at SXSW, the band was hoping to score some touring opportunities back in the United States although at the moment, they are back home, likely recovering from an exhausting week. ”We don’t necessarily want to be rich and famous. We just want to earn a comfortable living, doing what we love. If anything better happens, we’ll do that obviously…” If you hadn’t guessed from this article, the band has a very relaxed attitude towards things. That idea most likely comes from the immense talent amongst the musicians in the band who know that the music speaks for itself and that eventually, they will succeed in America, or at least make it to Disney World (their hidden reason for traveling to the United States).

"It’s no secret that the music industry is gasping for air and struggling for ways to break new artists,” said Russell Emanuel CEO, Extreme Music. “HYPE's hybrid model as an artist-friendly incubator leveraging its ability to license tracks directly in high profile shows will dramatically boost an act’s profile. This is a new breed, second to none career jump-starting opportunity. It's production music on steroids!"

The initial HYPE offerings are slated for release early in 2011 and include: Daniel Chavez Wright (3D Friends), George Byrne, Locksley, Ginger Sling, The Midi Mafia, New Cassettes, Desoto Jones, Theft, National Skyline, Atlantic Line, Hell & Lula, Marc Robillard, The Diamond Light, The New FOs, Lego Johnson, Atlantic Connection and Heavy Young Heathens.

NEW CASSETTES is a five-piece band from Northampton, England who delivers a fresh blast of modern rock that is artful, edgy and infectious. They released Winterhead in April 2012 on N13 Records in partnership with MTV and received accolades from AOL Spinner, PureVolume, Filter, RCRD LBL and many more.

Evoking a fascinating blend of classic indie rock, pop and new wave, yet thoroughly 21st Century, the quintet have been leaving audiences swooning since 2005 when their spiky guitars go head to head with propulsive rhythms and hook-filled choruses.

Winterhead mixed by with Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne and sound engineer Geoff Sanoff (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, School of Seven Bells).
