Is the Groove in Your Heart? Want to Rock Steady? Like to Get Down, Boogie, Oogie, Oogie? If yes, then you’ll love New Groove Society! As you would expect, this Minneapolis-based, five piece band, puts the emphasis on the groove. Combining old classics from the likes of Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder, with classic disco songs, and with new music by Beyonce and Amy Winehouse, their repertoire will inspire even the most shy and flat-footed to dance, dance, dance.
Led by the powerful vocal and stage presence of Kash Ahua and Andrea Bennett, the four-piece rhythm section - Greg Mosner, guitar; JJ Perry, bass; and Mark Baker, drums – complements the singers with a big, soulful sound. “As a group we go out of our way to pick music that is strong in melody and groove. It doesn’t matter if it was written 40 years ago or 4 years ago, if it has those two elements, we’ll do it,” says JJ Perry. Along with the trio, the two singers, with occasional backup help from the rhythm section, also put out a big sound. “I didn’t travel 7,000 miles to whisper sweet nothings in your ear!” says Kash who hails from Africa and has brought with her a love for American R&B music.
While this group comes from various places, they are all veterans of the Minneapolis music scene and have played all the hallowed venues such as the Cabooze, Bunkers, Fine Line, First Avenue, The Dakota, and more. Look for them giging in 2009 and all who like to groove are invited to be members of the New Groove Society. Join the Society!
