"Stagebound Competition Final"

Sat 22nd Nov, 2008 in Local News

On a wet Thursday night the punters descended upon Amplifier Bar to watch the cream of Perth’s local crop battle out the Stagebound competition. The winner of the night was not only to receive a $5000 equipment prize, but also a coveted slot at 2009’s Southbound Festival. Punters were also in for a treat seeing so much heavyweight local talent going head to head on the one bill.

As the heavens opened, New Mono called the now burgeoning crowd back in from Amplifier’s outside bar. New Mono’s sound sits somewhere between Interpol and Live, and the addition of a keyboard has added a new dimension to their songs. Swathed in walls of feedback and discordant rhythm lines, New Mono played a tight set of melodic rock and, for this reviewer’s money, should have taken the cake.

Bio

New Mono is all about the music. Inspired by the desire to produce a unique soundscape free from mainstream trend. Shimmering layered guitar riffs, driving bass lines and haunting vocals are backed up by inventively minimalist drumming. After 2 years of songwriting and recording, New Mono have spent the last six months refining their live sound.
Their original sound stems from a critical appreciation of sonic engineering. The completion of Harvest Studio allowed the band to create and record music free from the constraints of other, commercial studios.
The use of custom In-Ear -Monitors with a dedicated monitor rig enables faithful reproduction of the sound from gig to gig. This allows the Front-Of-House engineer to focus on the main mix.
Songwriting has focussed on clarity and cohesiveness, producing a collection of songs that takes the listener down a path less trodden.

Influences: Radiohead, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Stone Roses, The Cure, Pixies, Joy Division, The Jesus and Mary Chain...
