Biography

Garland (Sonny) Jones and Karen (Jones) Hill are a father daughter duo who love to sing
Country Gospel Music. They have been singing together for ten years. They sing and minister in their home church (Lerona United Methodist Church) and other local churches and gospel related events.

Garland (Sonny) began his musical career at the age of 16, singing and playing the fiddle with a local group called the “Green Valley Boys.” They had an early morning radio program on WLOH in Princeton, WV.

Garland married Norma Jean Dunn and soon went into the Army, serving in the U.S., the Far East, and in Europe. During this time they had two children, Ronald Craig, and Karen Lynn. Garland has two granddaughters, Kari Beth and Kayla Jean.

After leaving the military, Garland returned to WV and resumed his education graduating from Concord College and taught public school for 20 years. He also pastored two local churches during this time.

Garland lost his wife, Norma Jean, to cancer in 1982. He continued to minister in the church and in 1986 formed a new trio called “The New Sounds.” They recorded their first project in August 1987 in Winston Salem NC. Jimmy Edmonds, now with Carolina Opera, was the project engineer.

In February 1988, we were invited to sign with Eddie Crook on the “Wren” label and recorded our second project in Nashville TN. We were pleased with the response from the public and received many calls and letters for tapes and open dates.

Our next project was also with Eddie Crook in Nashville, TN in 1989 and the release was on “Harvest” label. The response from this project was tremendous. We were now singing in a five state area and the ministry was really doing well.

Our next project, in 1992 was with Jimmy Edmonds in Galax, VA. The group had a new member and a little different sound but was still doing well.

Shortly after this project I lost both the lead singer and the alto singer. I continued to minister and sing until 1996 when my daughter Karen began to sing with me. We just completed a new project entitled “Yesterday, Today and Forever". We hope everyone will support our new project and that God will Bless the songs to his Glory. All of the eleven songs are original songs written by Garland with music by David Johnson.

The New Sounds have performed on the:
Nationally Acclaimed Appalachian Jubilee Music Stage/Radio/Television show in Chambersburg, PA.
On the Sid Hughes Nationally Syndicated Radio Program
At Tweetsie Railroad in Boone, NC sponsored by the “Singing News Magazine” and Classic Artist, Inc.
At Pipestem State Park Resort located in Pipestem WV, sponsored by the UMC Southern District Ministerial Conference.
In local churches in a five state area including, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
At "Bridge Day" in Fayetteville WV with over one hundred thousand people in attendance.
Now that I have reached the three score and ten age level and because of some health problems, we don’t travel as much as we once did. But as long as God gives me the strength I will continue to write songs and minister wherever he leads me.

All That Matters Now Is Heaven

Written By: Garland Jones

When this life here is over
When we've said our last farewell
Will our eyes behold that city
As we cross Jordans stormy swell.

Chorus
All that matters now is heaven
Worldly things have all gone
Looking for our Lord and savior
For a mansion ,a crown, and a home.
2
Not much time now to labour
The fields are white it's time to reap
Go forth and glean for the master
Gather them in before they sleep.

Chorus

3
When we finally reach that city
Where our loved ones have all gone
We'll behold the face of Jesus
As we gather around his great throne.

Chorus

Looking for our lord and savior
For a mansion,a crown, and a home.

Heaven's Just A Heartbeat Away

Written By: Garland Jones

1
Seems we're always planning for tomorrow
For the things we think we might need
But tomorrow's not promised, only today
And heaven's just a heartbeat away.

Chorus:
Yes heaven's just a heartbeat away
Like a flower we bloom and soon fade away
Time passes on and soon we say good bye
And heaven's just a heartbeat away.

2
So many are storing their treasures down here
Building castles on the sand without any fear
Seeking pleasure and wealth and happiness they say
But heaven's just a heartbeat away.

Chorus

Tag
Time passes on and soon we say good bye
And heaven is just a heartbeat away.

He's Still Walking ON The Water

Written By: Garland Jones

1
Like the waves in a storm I was tossed about
Sinking deeper into sin with no way out
Then walking on the water came Jesus
He took my hand, Helped me stand, calmed my storm.

2
Like Peter who cried I parish, Lord save me
Don't be afraid to speak his name
Put your hand in his hand by faith take your stand
And Jesus will rescue your soul.

Chorus
For He's still walking on the water
He speaks and the storm passes by
The billows may blow surly you'll know
Jesus is still walking on the water.

Repeat chorus

Pray For Me

Written By: Garland Jones

Today I got a call from an old friend
He said brother could you pray for my need again
For my need has exceeded what the doctors can do
So I'm depending on Jesus and you.

Chorus:
So can you pray my brother, prayers go farther
When we agree together on our knees
On Him we can depend, He's more than just a friend
Won't you please lift up my need again.
2
Well I prayed and prayed and I prayed again
But Jesus took my friend on home with Him
It's not the answer you expect, but the need has been met
For God always answers prayer.

Chorus:

Some Glad Morning

Written By: Garland Jones

1
Some glad morning by and by
We'll meet Jesus in the sky
And with him forever sing his praise
We'll crown Him king of all and thank Him that He saw
Our need and gave His life that we might live.
2
So praise His name He took our blame
And at the cross He died
That we could be set free from all our sins
Glory and honor to His name forever we shall sing
That Jesus Christ, truly He's the king
3
So take His name release your shame
Into His kingdom go
To dwell in peace and harmony with Him
Sins forgiven, new life is given
Joy beyond compare
Get ready for the meeting in the air.

Talking About Heaven

Written By: Garland Jones

1
Soon we'll enter heaven thru the gates of pearl
Soon we'll say goodbye to the things of this world
Soon we'll see the walls of jasper and the streets of gold
And live in a mansion where we'll never ever grow old.
Chorus
Well I'm talking about heaven
About the promise land
The land of milk and honey over on the golden strand
Where the river of life is running free
I'm talking about heaven won't you come along with me.
2
Gonna be some singing and shouting there
Gonna hear hallelujahs every where
Gonna see sweet Jesus by the Fathers side
And hear him say welcome home sweet home my child

Chorus

3
No tears will flow in our heavenly home
No sad farewells that leave us alone
Sorrows and trials will all be gone
And we'll share our story of how we overcome.

Chorus
