"Cover Alert: Newton Crosby - Weird Science"

Back in 2010 we profiled up-and-coming jamtronica act Newton Crosby for our Blips column and since that time they’ve gone on to score impressive festival slots and have shared the stage with acts like moe., Umphrey’s, Conspirator and The Heavy Pets. They’ve also developed their sound in intriguing ways, especially recently with the addition of saxophonist Seth Eisenstein (Hamburger Hunt) at the last few gigs. Newton Crosby played Albany’s Red Square last weekend and we wanted to shine a light on their untz’d-out cover of Oingo Boingo’s Weird Science – the theme song of the 1985 John Hughes teen flick starring Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, and Kelly LeBrock – from that show.

Due to its synthy elements, the Weird Science theme song was a good choice for Newton Crosby and they used it as a launching pad for an electronica-tinged jam propelled by drummer Alzie Sisco with brassy accents provided by Eisenstein. We do warn that just as the improv gets particularly good, a really annoying chatter starts shooting the shit in front of the mics used for this recording. STFU!!! - Hidden Track

"Blips: Four Under The Radar Bands"

Take a heavy dose of untz, add a heaping helping of anthemic rock and throw in a smidge of jazz and you’ve nailed the formula for up-and-coming NYC-area jammers Newton Crosby. This talented quartet has made a name for themselves gigging around the Northeast performing a mix of unique originals and booty-shaking covers. Formed in 2009, Newton Crosby features members of a trio of bands that might be familiar to HT readers – Give Us The Money Lebowski, The Jack and The Brainbox.

You can’t help but hear the influence of jamtronica faves The Disco Biscuits, but instead of running from the comparison these guys have embraced it by including covers of Shelby Rose, Confrontation and I-Man into their setlists. That’s not to say there isn’t plenty of originality in NC’s music as the instrumental original Crispy Frickin’ Chicken displays by featuring a double lead guitar attack and a jam heavily steeped in psychedelia. We’re not the only fans of these gents as moe., Lynch, The Breakfast, Splintered Sunlight and The Heavy Pets have all shared bills with the band since they started.

Bio

Combining influences from electronica, funk and jazz, this sextet from New Jersey has been taking on the Northeast jamband scene since 2009. Newton Crosby has shared the stage with moe., Umphrey's McGee, Conspirator, Jen Hartswick, The Heavy Pets and more.

Newton Crosby makes it a point to keep the music at high energy and the crowd dancing throughout the show. With Alonzo Sisco on drums and Billy Vegas on bass, together they gel in unison creating perfect conditions for improvisation. Stephen “Squigs” Minutillo and Chris Cartelli, guitars, keys and vocals, elevate the band’s sound by trading off of each other’s leads and directing the set’s musical exploration. Eric 'Eroc' Mitchell brings his great piano stylings and unique brand of synth sounds to the music. The recent additon of Seth Eisenstein on saxaphone completes the bands sound and adds to the bands musical diversity. Climactic peaking jams backed by breakbeats and funky basslines, Newton Crosby is sure to get the crowd and dance party going.
