"New Waters – Lions EP"

New Waters is a young Finnish group who recently signed to Blood and Ink Records (Ironwill, Blessed By A Broken Heart). After a self-released demo, the quintet unveiled their first real output, entitled Lions EP.

If you’re wondering what to expect from these hardcore kids from northern cold, the answer is simple. Six songs in sixteen minutes, all executed with the rush, haste and determination that youth gives. The band delivers pissed and dirty hardcore punk in vein of Converge, Cursed and Trap Them. New Waters heads straight from the first title ‘Empty Grave’, without questioning.

Fortunately, the bursts are short and avoid total boredom. Although the sound is interesting, it is recognizable. I have the feeling that this EP is split into two parts. The first three tracks are efficient, ‘Man and The World’, but slightly redundant, ‘Wave’. The last three are relentless and undoubtedly the best ones on this EP.

Only half way through the EP, it is where the generally poor or filling tracks begin to appear. However, this is where New Waters strikes hard. The highlight of this EP is undoubtedly ‘Manifest’, the fourth track whose furious and urgent riff topped by galloping drums has nothing to envy to the best productions of the genre. ‘Old Heart, New Heart’ is like its predecessor: a crusher.

Lions EP was released on February 2013 and can be purchased through Blood and Ink Records’ Bandcamp. In the mean time, the band will be touring Northern Europe soon, and you should definitely keep an eye on them.

"New Waters – Lions EP"

I am aware that most readers here at IVM were devastated upon hearing the news of Advent departing from the music world and moving on to other things. Finnish band, New Waters should be able to quench some of the undying thirst die hard Advent fans have been dealing with since the departure of their beloved band (See what I did there?).

Empty Grave begins with a symphony of feedback and battering drums, leading into Converge esque guitar riffs, complete with a short and sweet breakdown tagging on at the end of the song. This track is what reminds me most of Advent as the riffs to the tone sound as though they could be unreleased demos from the band. Even the vocalist is reminiscent to Musten except at a slightly higher pitch.

Man and the World is my favorite on the record, keeping the energy high, never taking a break where Empty Grave left off. While the focal point of the song is the circle pit inducing riffs, there is an underlying, technical lead weaving in and out of the dissonance, emerging only for a brief and air guitar worthy solo.

Manifest begins with almost tribal feeling drums and gritty bass, before being joined by a southern feeling riff. The vocalist kicks things off with a gravelly yell rather than his normal hoarse scream keeping things interesting. The tribal drums return towards the bridge of the song along with backup percussion that give an old Living Sacrifice feel.

The New Beginning is the longest track on the record, and the only clocking in above 3:30. With the longer time span, this song really takes its time to develop and become fully fleshed out. Right off the bat, the band is able to show they are capable of making more than just noise as the guitars and bass become a flurry of hammer-ons, pull offs, and mind boggling riffs, while the drums keep a steady punk beat in between the variety of fills.

Overall: While the majority of these songs were interesting and memorable, a couple just fell through the cracks keeping this from being a perfect release. However, the sheer skill that is apparent keeps me interested in hearing more from these guys. When you’re able to tell they can master their instruments and make more than just noise in this genre, good things are usually in store. - Indie Vision Music

Bio

New Waters was born in 2010 after Oula, Miika and Pete had left all their previous bands behind. Being old friends the trio decided to start a new project and began playing together with Oula on guitar Miika on drums and Pete screaming his guts out. Passion for sincere and heavy music was something they all shared and the first songs took the form of hardcore punk. Soon the bands mutual acquaintance, Ville, was asked to join forces with the trio as the bass player. A harsh demo containing five songs was released with this line-up and sold hand-to-hand with profits given to charity. The four-piece band then continued fine-tuning their musical vision until yet another friend was added to the crew. Ville’s roommate Henri was needed for second guitar. Just weeks after becoming a quintet, New Waters released the ‘Lions’ EP-CD in 2011. Published by a passionate independent label, Authentic Sounds Records, the EP helped the band play more shows and gain reputation as an uncompromising live act in Finland. Yet bigger things were on the radar already. During and after the release of ‘Lions’, the main songwriter Oula kept writing new material. It was decided that a debut album was the next step on New Water’s path. Most of 2012 was spent on this project, with a few shows played on the side. It was also during 2012 that Blood & Ink Records (USA) spotted the young and enthusiastic band and released a wider digital release of ‘Lions’. 2013 is looking to be an excellent year for New Waters. With the re-release of ‘Lions’ and soon to be released album on the way the band is stronger than ever.
