"Best CDs of 2012"

• Ron Burnett’s jazz choices

The first four are by young musicians all on the local jazz scene and all are as good as anything you are likely to hear in the UK.

Kate Peters Septet (kate-peters.com) Not only the best voice around, but Kate has bagged the best young players for an exciting contemporary take on jazz standards, plus a couple of originals.

Ian Chalk Quartet (info@ianchalk.net) Like Kate’s band, Chalkie’s is resident at York’s Phoenix Inn and offers six originals by band members and five surprising jazz covers of tunes by Elvis Costello, Sting, and Joe Jackson. The oblique version of the Beatles Got To Get You Into My Life plays repeatedly on Jazz FM.

Paul Baxter Quartet (paulbaxtermusic.com) The energetic Mr Baxter has formed a new quartet to play his new compositions, all unfailingly impressive. The top-class band ventures into the free jazz “fire in the pet-shop” area sometimes, but this is a rewarding and accessible album.

New York Brass Band (newyorkbrassband.co.uk) James Lancaster has cunningly plundered the New Orleans marching band concept, a highly mobile acoustic band peddling high-energy enjoyment, covering jazz standards alongside pop tunes. You will catch this youthful seven/eight-piece band busking in York and Harrogate as well as playing college balls and jazz festivals.

Ivo Neame, Yatra (Edition Records) Multi-instrumentalist mainstay of many London bands steps into the leader’s limelight to direct a starry eight-piece, each track startlingly different in voicings by using varied instrumental pairings against exciting ensemble writing. - York Press

Bio

New York Brass Band are North Yorkshire’s only contemporary New Orleans inspired Brass Band. Hailing from the mean streets of York the band are part of a funky brass revolution that is sweeping the UK. Inspired by Rebirth, Soul Rebels, Hot 8, Youngblood and Brassroots, NYBB pack a powerful punch of relentless drums, rumbling tuba and wailing horns… nothing kicks a party into gear like the sound of a smokin’ New Orleans Mardi Gras Jazz Band.

New York Brass Band is a powerhouse 7-piece, with a line-up of percussion, sax, trumpets, trombones and sousaphone. The band take its inspiration from contemporary New Orleans musicians, but have a repertoire that ranges from Marvin Gaye to George Michael, from Cee-Lo Green to Stevie Wonder, with some funky, gritty northern originals thrown in for good measure.

The band was formed in November 2010 by James Lancaster, and quickly established itself as a dynamic, flexible band who can perform outside acoustically at a drinks reception or street event, or amplified on a festival stage or club. No gimmicks, no backing tracks, no auto tune, this is music that gets people dancing and a band who make the audience feel part of the show!

2012 was an amazing year for NYBB with numerous festival performances including the legendary Cork Jazz Festival and the surreal Secret Garden Party. Many wedding parties have jumped to the sound of the NYBB while repeat bookings at Hifi Leeds and Richmix London are testament to the appeal of this hip young band. Corporate clients include Taylors of Harrogate, Arena Racecourses, Vibe Music and Continental Drifts.

2013 promises to be a very busy year with wedding bookings already in the diary and an invitation to play at Soundwave Festival in Croatia

The band’s debut CD was released in April 2012 is available on the website. Even the restrained residents of the ancient City of York have found themselves letting their hair down and rocking the historic streets of the City.

Acoustic or amplified, sunshine or rain, indoors or out… NYBB will get the party started!
