A Word About Nexus North East

Greetings, my name is Lee Marvin. Nexus North East is the result of musical and personal relationships that I have developed in New York City. When I thought about musicians for the group, I had three things in mind, musical ability, artistic integrity, and the “hang factor”. I wanted the musicians to inspire and challenge each other, to have distinct musical voices, and to enjoy each other’s company. So I called some of my favorite musicians: Bob Rodriguez, Sly Scott, and Jim Toscano.

Bob and I met as faculty members at Turtle Bay Music School in Manhattan. Our Faculty Jazz Trio played concerts and jazz education presentations in schools. Bob and I have performed and recorded together in a wide variety of venues. We are both composers and we are familiar with each other’s writing and approach. The consistent growth of Bob’s very personal voice on the piano continues to inspire me.

Sly and I had the rare opportunity to play jazz together several times a week over a period of years as part of Music Under New York as members of New York Express, and through Hospital Audiences. We also recorded the self-titled CD, “New York Express”; performed on television, and in Europe together. I have witnessed Sly’s special ability to touch people with his playing many times.

Jim and I have played with the MACnyc award winning jazz cabaret group Black Tie, Roger Friedman, The Cavers, Jeff Radke’s fusion band and a production of A Chorus Line. I always feel confident that when Jim is on the gig, the music will feel great and be interesting. Jim is a very intuitive musician who approaches his instrument as both a drummer and an arranger.

In this group, I play upright bass. I have played a wide range of styles on both electric and upright basses. I try to use my experience on both instruments to bring a versatile and rhythmic bottom line to our music. My goals in this band are: to play in a way that makes the other musicians feel free to go where they please, to write music that brings out the best in the players, and to bring the magic of a lifetime of music to the audience.

We are excited about playing together and that’s where the music lives.
