Biography

Nicholas Roy is a Melbourne-based singer/songwriter. His debut release the “Cardboard Heart" EP introduces an honest and unaffected young talent, as a part of that new brand of music that doesn’t sit comfortably in any one genre, but needs more room, more descriptors, to adequately express it – rock in style, pop in accessibility. However you want to describe it, it grabs you in a second, pulls you right in and holds you there.

The entire gig is 100% original and 100% independent – Nicholas writes every song, on top of doing the management and production himself. Every song offers a something different from his successful fusion of contemporary pop/rock and the lyrical soul-based rock from a previous generation – hints of Dylan, Paul Simon, and Ray Charles sitting comfortably alongside tones of Rufus Wainright, Ben Folds, Beck and Ray Lamontagne. Every song is candid and uncluttered, and every show executed with a casual sophistication, making watching and listening to this up and coming star a real pleasure.

Innocent Things

Written By: Nicholas Roy

Little lies
Velvet punches
Soft deceptions
Paralyses everything it touches
No exceptions

He was lonely
She was bored
A surefire way
To eventually start a war
If she stayed

So she took his car
And his nylon string guitar
And drove like a maniac
Listening to the Js
And her favourite mix tape
She sang insanely at
The top of her voice

You only run away
If you're guilty of
Innocent things, of innocent things
There's nothing you can say
If you're guilty of
Innocent things, of innocent things

Honeyed whispers
Sugared sighs
Good intentions
Chocolate covered almond eyes
Sexual tension

He was hungry
She was starved
The table was laid
They gobbled it up
A little too fast
And they paid

She took his car
And his gold credit card
And drove like a maniac
Listening to the Js
And her favourite mix tape
She sang insanely at
The top of her voice

You only run away
If you're guilty of
Innocent things, of innocent things
There's nothing you can say
If you're guilty of
Innocent things, of innocent things

So Close

Written By: Nicholas Roy

Lie next to me
And hold me until I sleep
Mould to my body
Cover me, keep in the heat

No conversation now
No there's no need to speak
And I won't ask you questions
I'll leave you the secrets you keep

I know there's no knowing but knowing's not what I need
I feel it all hiding in the timing of your heart beat

And the time seems to slow without movements to flow around us
As you reach out I fall and the room seems so small around us
So close and I want to breathe you in
So close and you're like a second skin
It's a sweet defeat

Dance with me slowly
Rest your head against mine
Lose yourself, find me
As we both step out of time
Promise me nothing
Only whatever you can
And I'll take what you give me and I'll give you all that I am

No, there's no knowing but knowing's not what I need
'Cause everything I need
Everything I want's here beside me

And the time seems to slow without movements to flow around us
As you reach out I fall and the room seems so small around us
So close and I want to breathe you in
So close and you're like a second skin
It's a sweet release

Cardboard Heart

Written By: Nicholas Roy and Adam Coad

Don't make it harder
For this well-worn heart to mend
Lonely people in line feel the light that you shine over me
For all to see
And we can't help that

Don't make it harder
For this cardboard heart to bend
'Cause the way that I feel is that you'll make a meal out of me
For all to see
And we can't have that

Watch me run
I'm a concrete man
And I hold it all
In these vacant hands
You see through me
You blow me apart
And it's only the start
Now I understand

Don't make it too much
For this airborne heart to land
There are more pieces of me
Than before this came to be
But I'm sure you're thinking

Watch him run
He's a concrete man
And he held it all
In those vacant hands
You'll see through me
You'll blow me apart
And that's only the start
Now I understand
