"Review from Jager Uprising"

Nicholas Roy, Dirt Unit, Dog’s Breakfast. Wednesday September 7
Jager Uprising @ The Greyhound.
Presented by Inpress.

"... To cap the night off we were treated to Nicholas Roy. An extraordinary talent backed by a strong band. Nicholas plays keyboard and sings. Bass, guitar and drums fill the sound out. He has a wonderful voice. The first song was funky as. Think the cat in the hat. Jamiraqoi. Then slow it down and allow his rich voice to come out. Expressive as hell. Taking you in. The band lay it down, adding tones and frills. The drummer rules. You can hear a bit of Tim Freidman as well. You can hear it on the radio, you can feel the craft live. A real privilege to hear talent such as this. "

Bio

Nicholas Roy is a Melbourne-based singer/songwriter. His debut release the “Cardboard Heart" EP introduces an honest and unaffected young talent, as a part of that new brand of music that doesn’t sit comfortably in any one genre, but needs more room, more descriptors, to adequately express it – rock in style, pop in accessibility. However you want to describe it, it grabs you in a second, pulls you right in and holds you there.

The entire gig is 100% original and 100% independent – Nicholas writes every song, on top of doing the management and production himself. Every song offers a something different from his successful fusion of contemporary pop/rock and the lyrical soul-based rock from a previous generation – hints of Dylan, Paul Simon, and Ray Charles sitting comfortably alongside tones of Rufus Wainright, Ben Folds, Beck and Ray Lamontagne. Every song is candid and uncluttered, and every show executed with a casual sophistication, making watching and listening to this up and coming star a real pleasure.
