Bio

Nick Barker, solo or with his band is an outstanding performer. This is evident by his many recordings, and importantly his live performances. Every live show is a unique event. One of Nick’s greatest attributes is that he has the ability to read the audience, and he in turn creates a show especially for them. He is subtle yet strong, and humorous and thoughtful with his delivery and his music.

Since 2004 he has released two critically acclaimed albums, Backyard Six (03) and C Sides (05). Both epitomize Nick’s work as an outstanding singer and songwriter.

For the past six years Nick has toured Australia, the UK and Europe regularly, and there is no doubt he is a great live artist.

Musically Nick does not fall into one specific category, and this is not surprising after such a successful and diverse career. The major constants are quality, emotive lyrics, guts and soul.

In the early 1980s he was with one of Australia’s leading indie bands, The Wreckery, and by 1987 he ventured out onto his own to start the acclaimed and successful Reptiles.

Nick Barker and The Reptiles quickly gained a great following, a record deal, a new album, and a single that charted for months. This in turn established Nick as one of Australia’s most popular performers of his generation.

From the 1990s onwards Nick has continued to work and develop as a solo performer, and importantly he has established himself as one of Australia’s finest songwriters. He has had major success on the mainstream and independent charts, and has written for film, as well as acting in the Nadia Tass film, AMY, where he co-starred with Rachel Griffiths and Ben Mendlesohn.

Nick's music has featured in several Australian film and television soundtracks, most notably Geoffrey Wright's "Metal Skin".

In 1999 Barker released the acclaimed Annie Get Your Guru. It was a self-produced album of rootsy, gut level rock that spawned two singles, ‘Thylacine’ and ‘Machine’.

In 2001 Nick released "Returned Service", a live acoustic album, released on Croxton Records, a label established by Mick Thomas. 2001 saw Nick tour extensively with Mick Thomas & The Sure Thing where they played to packed houses throughout Australia. The independent nature of this release and tour inspired Nick to focus on new work.
