Forgotten. Lost. Cult. Call it what you like, but dogged singer/songwriter Nick Garrie has remained on the periphery of the music business since he first emerged as a precocious talent in the late 1960s. Remarkably it is now that he’s winning fans and critics over more than ever before in his rollercoaster of a ‘career’. The story begins in 1969, when a 20-year-old Nick Garrie recorded his debut album in Paris, France. The album featured a 56-piece orchestra and was to be called 'The Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas'. Everything seemed to be falling into place for this half-Russian half-Scottish singer/songwriter who was tipped for great things, even being dubbed 'the next Bob Dylan'. However the owner of the label committed suicide and the album was not released.
Thoroughly disillusioned, Nick spent the following years in the musical wilderness, with flurries of activity - including several notable collaborations with French composer and staunch supporter, Francis Lai, a number one album in Spain in the mid-1980s (which he was never paid for) a tour with Leonard Cohen….
In 2005, this classic album was rediscovered and released by Rev-Ola Records to widespread acclaim. Five years later Elefant Records put out a deluxe edition and a collection of Nick’s new songs entitled ’49 Arlington Gardens’, recorded with Scottish musicians in Glasgow, including Duglas T. Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Francis Macdonald (Teenage Fanclub), Ally Kerr (singer/songwriter). In June 2012, for the first time in over forty years, Nick performed the album in its entirety - with a string section - at the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona to a rapturous reception. The musical future is looking decidedly bright once again...
